Any of you guys ever run into this? Just picked up a board, and mervins sintered bases usually eat wax. When I tried waxing, wax basically would not go onto certain areas. Any suggestions? I'm thinking stone grind or something, but if there is anythign else I can try I'm down for it.
Used board, its seen a lot of use before it got to me. Possibly a little base burn? |

Does the wax bead up on the board, or does it just not relect when the wax melts onto the base. Any chance you can post pics of the problem areas?

Maybe the original owner burnt the base when waxing it and that caused the pores to close.

someone might have used an arctic hardener? I can imagine ironing enough of that into a base would almost permanently fill the pours. I'd use a copper brush with thet sinter then wrap it in a heating blanket for a good half hour and try again. I don't use rub on or paste waxes but I wonder if they could cause this. also get a really sharp scraper I purchased a stationary belt sander recently just for scrapers and light base work.

A base grind on a sintered board will generally allow the base to absorb more wax. Here is a link that has been around this site for sometime. I think Kimchi found it originally.

A lot of base cleaners are actually bad for a sintered base, you can also overheat the base waxing and close the pores. If that is the case your best bet is base grind.

no pores in base material, but yes you can damage the structure and wax wont adhere to it very well anymore. base cleaner isnt really bad, it just sucks all the wax out, so youre starting from complete scratch. only use it if its really dirty, and then hotwax a few times to get it all wet again... hah

base cleaner then steel brush are my next few options. |
