Latest Report on Global Warming:

Monday, Nov. 15, 2010

The Associated Press

DAVIS, Calif. -- Scientists at the University of California, Davis say rising global temperatures are likely to alter Lake Tahoe and its surrounding region in the decades ahead.

Their report, released Monday, predicts a steady shift from winter snowfall to rain and an earlier snowmelt, leading to flooding by mid-century in the Upper Truckee River, which feeds the lake.

Prolonged droughts could take hold by the end of the century. That could drop the lake below its rim and cut off flows to the Truckee River, which supplies Reno, Nev.

Computer models suggest the average snowpack in the Tahoe basin will decline by 40 percent to 60 percent by 2100. Some winters could pass with only rain and no snowfall.

Tahoe's clarity also could be diminished by the emergence of algae.

Very long term here. Any time "model" is used the accuracy isn't very.

although model predictions aren't 100% accurate, it's still indicitive of the trend that is happening in the area.  maybe it won't be 40-60 % in 100yrs, but it will be something. maybe 20-40%? who knows.

Man I really hope that this doesn't happen.  It seems really unbelievable that snow won't fall above 6,500 feet.  I know the lake is only at 6200 ft... won't it still be cold enough up at the higher elevations?

Anyone has worked or lived in the ski industry here in Northern, CA has read these reports every year. The average snow pack density in the Sierra's which feeds most of Northern and Southern CA their water has been diminishing since the beginning of the century. The entire state is dependant upon this snowpack lasting through the spring and into the summer which hasn't been happening in the last few years. Very very scary stuff.

So the fact that humans have been running around and lighting every source of fuel on fire for the last hudred years has had nothing to do with the rise in temperature?  Hmmm..... Interesting!

there are 63 streams that feeds lake tahoe........

The Truckee river is the only one that flows away from the lake......

How can you take someone seriously when they say  A river feeds a lake and then in the next sentence feeds a city away from the lake.

I love the irony of this subject.

1) Many people believe global warming is manmade

2) Most people don't live within 30 minutes of the resorts

3) Most people who bitch and moan about our precious snow are skiers/boarders

Yet, every weekend the freeways from SF to Tahoe are jam packed with families and rich kids sporting their gas guzzling SUVs up the hill. Polluting the air and doing their damnedest to contribute to exactly what they are crying about.

Oh yes I forgot that understanding the impact of human consumption on the environment and ultimately the climate is a simple matter.  I will be sure to send out the memo to countless number of scientist working on the issue to stop their research because the problem is solved.

@shwazy

Why would the scientists want to stop research the subject? It's in their best intrest to keep coming to the man made global warming hypothesis. After all that's how they get their funding.

P.S. The quote button sucks on this site.

Likely?

Likely?

WTF  does likely mean.

I am likely to drop one in my pants when I am 104 years old. But I am unlikely to ever get there.

Likely?  wtf is likely. give me the  percentage chance of this model occurring within a given time frame.

Davis has the report for download , and I cant see "likely" expressed in numbers or even defined anywhere there.

I believe that if we keep polluting and living the way we do now that by....(hmm what is a date in time that I won't live to and that people will probably have forgotten about what I said anyway)...as I was saying, by 2100, there will be no more snow

I wouldn't worry about this to much. In 20 years or so they will be back to saying the world is actually cooling and we are all doomed just like they did in the 70's.

All this global warming crap really gets annoying. Can people please look back in history and see that earth has had many different climates throughout history. What ever made people think that earth should maintain the same climate now when it never has in the past?

Did these Davis researchers even get out of the building this whole summer? They would have noticed that this past summer was much cooler than normal and would have been writing about "global cooling" instead. They probably also didn't notice the amount of snowfall Tahoe got last year. They need to get out more...

Alot of ignorance in the post. Almost unbearable actually.

The fact of the matter is that yes, there is natural climate change... ie. periods of glaciation and melt which has to do with the planets eccentric orbit and axis changes.

Secondly, you cannot possibly think that there is no degree to anthropogenic warming factors.

Water Vapor is a much large green house gas than CO2 (true fact), but the flux rate on CO2 has been nearly destroyed by human industrialization which accelerates the natural climate cycle through positive feedback loops.

Vast amounts of CO2 naturally flux in and out of our oceans, rocks (lithic cycle) and life on earth. (move from those and our atmosphere) naturally these are in somewhat of an equilibrium albeit dynamic as it may be. However since industrialization and fossil fuel consumption exploded since the 30's the flux into the atmosphere is FAR larger than the rate at which CO2 is sequestered out. EVEN if the greenhouse effect of H2O is MUCH larger THAN CO2, the SHEER fact that there is even a SLIGHT greenhouse effect from CO2 dictates a rise in surface temperatures.

I can go find sources if you'd like.. but this is the course work I do for my environmental science/biology major.

its already been proven, yes we are effecting the environment but not a lot. It is a natural phase that the earth warms and cools on its own. The earth is going through its warming phase.

^^^^ I think matthewmcevoy means: "quit putting so much sh*t into the atmosphere"

One of my neighbors drives all the way from here to vegas practically every other weekend in an an old gas guzzling SUV.  It's a 12 hour drive round trip!

Another neighbor drives 2 hours round trip to his job...even though he could already retire a millionaire.  He owns three cars (two huge pickups) and his wife has another two.

When they're in town,  all my neighbors drive around constantly.  They never ride a bike or walk anywhere

The local city diesel buses cycle every 30 minutes, 6 days a week...but there's rarely anyone on them

...it's a disturbing microcosm

I can go find sources if you'd like.. but this is the course work I do for my environmental science/biology major.

please stop bringing sound logic and scientific fact to this thread.  It will scare away the idiots I'm busy laughing at, and it's a slow day at work.

I'm sure you can always find some schmuck from Fox News standing in a snow storm and refuting the actual global warming research.

Next time you fill up think of some of this LOGIC.

1) just think about the shear volume of gasoline you are consuming.  12 gallons (for a small car) is a ton of product for anything.  When's the last time you bought 12 gallons of milk, or 12 gallons of anything for that matter.

2) Each gallon of gas produces 20 lbs of CO2.  That's a lot of shtooking co2.

3) Come to Utah in the middle of an inversion and tell me we can continue to consume like this.  Even the ultra conservative right wingers are pretty sure "that aint right".  The air is thick with soot and exhaust.  It's unhealthy, and it'll lower SLC's life expectancy.

really, and as an ignorant member of the masses, I would like to see what proof do you have to show that this is a "natural" phase of climate change, and not considerably effected by humans? My ignorant understanding is, that there has never been such a rapid increase in global temperature change recorded, that hasn't been caused by an identifiable natural disaster, or "cause".
