Hey.
Some of you may have read my previous thread on Japan. I'm finally getting everything sorted. Its on hold for this year as I'm working in the Swiss alps so the 2012 season it is. I'll be heading to New Zealand in June 2011 for their season and then onto Japan in December of 2011. I have my working visa for NZ and will have my working Japanese visa soon. I'll be flying into Tokyo. Does anyone have any advice about getting to the mountains? Or even better know of any jobs that will be available? Also for my visa i need a " Guarantor or Reference in Japan" would anyone living over there be willing to be my reference? i would just need to give the Japanese embassy your name and address as i need to have a point of contact during my stay. Thanks |

Dude. Sooo much info, thats sick, thanks. A little overwhelming trying to take it all in though.
Basically im after a good place to settle down for the season, Lots of POW and a little nightlife would be good. Small lift queues and a good cultural experience. I dont speak any Japanese but i'm going to learn what i can over the next few months. Where would you recommend? hokkaido sounds great, but do you think staying around myoko would be better for me? Thanks

the best places are obviously hakuba and niseko. These are the two places with the most internationally friendly vibe in all of japan. Nothing compares to these two places in japan. This means obviously theres more jobs to be had in either one than almost the rest of japan combined, but it also means theres more demand.
Pity you cant speak japanese. Frankly if you can throw out a decent amount of j-go youd be in pretty high demand at some of the other places like zao or myoko as they try to convince foreigners to come stay there. Still, sell yourself well and there are opportunities anywhere. The obviosu first place to look for contacts is http://www.snowjapan.com people there know people who know people. Spend some time posting on the forums and so long as you come across as a decent enough guy, someone somewhere will have a backdoor for you come next winter :) |

Im getting a working holiday visa so i am not allowed to have a job planned. I am only allowed to subsidize my travel with work once i am there.

Thinking about Tracks bar. what mountains are cool with letting you ride out of bounds?

Tracks dont need that many people in truth, they often have more people than they reasonably need to use. Still, get in contact with them, they may be able to set you up with some cheap digs if you get there early enough in teh season to get some jobs in and around happo :)
As for your second question: None of them. Theyll hunt you down. Riding out of bounds whilst not being in te company of an approved tour guide is a big NO at hakuba. Your best shot is cortina. But im pretty sure they also have a fairly strict policy, its just not as heavily enforced. |

If you ever looking for jobs I live in Hakuba all year round if you are ever in the Area come for a beer and I will show you around might know of a couple of people who are regulary looking for workers.
Cortina has desinated tree riding now and Happo one has some tree runs aswell if you are looking at back country I would look at evergreen hakuba. There are some good back country here but it is better to go with someone who knows the area and make sure you have all proper equipmennt. |
