As an accountant, this would take a remarkably long period of time to implement, and would potentially not be passed/considered, particularly due to it being close to election time again when it finally gets through everything - wouldn't be a very favourable political move. So you'd have a fair while yet, I'd dare say!

i concur

they tend to be pretty slow to put any legalisation in

especially cause this is already in the too hard basket Wink

Im looking at buying some goods worth $804 USD and at the moment comes to $789 AUD. I have two problems - firstly... I am worried about the AUD dropping again and secondly the talk about the GST. In anyones opinion are these two possibly going to happen around the end of the 2011 season so I can wait and get a good deal? People have told me around march/april the boards should be on special.

Seriously, from an administrative perspective it would be impossible to have an amendment to legislation passed and applied in practice by April - That's only four months, and at the moment they have far greater things to worry about with floods/fires, etc.

If you can afford it, get onto it now. The dollar shouldn't change too much.. The US is still printing more money so the increased quantity will bring down the value of their dollar comparative to ours. We've been around parity for three months or so now. And as long as the total value of your order is less than $1000AUD, you won't be charged customs duties or GST.

And sure, you may get an awesome deal if you wait three-four months, but given the US/Canadian season has only been open officially for a month or so.. Things may well sell out in the meantime.. And by that stage everyone from the southern hemisphere is getting into snow mode and checking out the deals too!

It says in your profile you're from QLD, but that you board at Falls.. Do you come down south often? Because I've heard from a few mates that around the Easter long weekend you can pick up some ripper deals down in the stores at Bright and Myrtleford on last years stock..! I've already picked up some stuff from the Bright ski shop like a jacket and helmet for half price.

The GST thing will not kick it that quickly...no matter how much Mr Harvey whines LOL

you can monitor aussie dollar vs greenback pretty readily
it doesnt look like it will drop anytime soon but ...things can happen

the only issue with waiting for sales is sizes/stock availability

find all the popular stuff never goes on sale because it gets sold out before end of season
if your prepared to chance it because you got back up plan on what you want to get then by all means try to save a few quid

I'm sick of Mr Harvey/the owners of DJ/Myer whinging about it already! Perhaps if they looked at the reasons we buy overseas (ie: not just price) they would be better off! Even if they charged 10% GST on what we buy, it's still going to be a lot cheaper.

Take my board/bindings/boots purchase for instance, given I bought everything at parity.

2011 GNU Snowboard
- $489.00US = $537.90 with AU GST
- $750AU
= Saving $261.00/$212.10 without/with a GST included

2011 Burton Bindings
- $260US = $286.00 with AU GST
- $450AU
= Saving $190.00/$164.00 without/with a GST included

2011 Burton Boots
- $220US = $242.00 with AU GST
- $400AU
= Saving $180.00/$158.00 without/with a GST included

Basically, a GST would have only added $96.90 to the total price of my purchase, while I would have saved $534.10 with a GST instead of $631.00 without one.

They aren't really tackling the problem. The main reason I buy from the US is because of the far superior customer service.

But yeah, Humdingaling basically hit what I said on the head - The good stuff will generally be gone if you wait til April!

I have the money but just heard from a friend that things are basically half price from around april onward. Im in no rush to buy things because our season doesn't start so far away.. Plus today the dollar dropped from 1.2 to 1.0. Its not much but it makes a different. I might buy some product sooner rather than later though because I think it will work out better.

Yes living on the gold coast and my favourite resort is falls creek. However I am working in canberra from may until october with no possibly holidays so it looks like perisher this year.

Yeah, I understand that. I'm looking at bits and pieces for my brother so he can start coming up with me this season too. He's fallen in love with water skiing and wake boarding, so is super keen to give snowboarding a try now he has a full time job. I think I'm going to wait til around then to pick him up some pants and gloves, so see how it goes.

Ahh that sucks! Not sure if you know or not.. But if you were looking to go down south on a weekend, Brindabella flies straight from Canberra to Albury, and Virgin flies to Albury via Sydney for around the $300 mark return. There are also a couple of our ski stores do return day trips to Falls Creek!

yeah that is true

at least you can still buy ROME & Sessions gear (for now) and some other random brands
Smile

if you really want the gear there is nothing stopping you from using a freight forwarder as such

Hey Scotty_222.. Noticed you were looking for bindings. Have you tried Auski, which is down on Hardware Lane.. Just off Bourke near the Maccas? They have mens Burton bindings for about the same price as the ones you would get off here at the moment.. And the staff I've spoken to there, up in the board room have been ridiculously helpful!

Altitude on Elizabeth St has a massive sale on too since they're relocating.. But the guy in there that looks after the snow gear section downstairs is really arrogant and pisses me off, so I refuse to buy anything from there!

Also.. you could always just try other sites? I've been using Evo for gear lately since they have far fewer restrictions, have amazing customer service, and their freight is pretty reasonable! Perhaps if you're looking for the restricted brands, try smaller US stores (that wouldn't have the shipping restrictions due to their size) or try eBay. I picked up 2011 Escapades for half the 2010 Aussie price!

LOL I must have run into the exact same guy at Altitude aswell! Got the exact same impression.

Also thought Auski was very helpful aswell.

Lucky I got in before there were even more restrictions.

Even if the tax comes in, I still will be buying overseas. They should be hastling the middle men who mark up the price and change their buying techniques.

Wholesalers still seem to think the Aussie dollar is worth 50c US, I'm thinking they need to go check thier currency conversions and give us some decent prices down here...

I thought this was the same thing as well, but apparently the retailers buy all their incoming stock at a certain price before the season begins at some going rate with the currency.  So regardless of the currency going up or down, prices will stay put until next years models/stock comes in.

But very rarely do prices fluxuate over seasons to reflect currency rates

If you see my calc a few posts up.. With exchange rates and a potential GST.. There isn't really 'that' much difference.. Basically the equivalent of buying a new pair of gloves on a $800-ish order.

tp1 is on the money.. From what I've heard from my local stores' FB page.. They have already ordered most of their 2011 season stock in already or at the very least, ordered. That would probably have been based on around a $0.80 exchange rate.. Then they would have to add their mark-up to make some $$ out of it.

Fewer and fewer stores actually have a middle-man these days. More than you think are buying directly from the US stores at their retail/sale price .. Bringing in only a few boards/items at a time to keep below the $1k customs threshold and then on-selling to us. Of course there are other complications.. But the smarter businessmen know they can't compete and are finding other ways to try and be cheaper. There's always the advantage here that due to cost to get to the mountains/buy boards and gear, then can make some $ out of rentals.. But that is often offsetting bus hire fees if they run trips, etc.
