I just booked a flight to Colorado for January 14th - 18th to go to Breckenridge. My friends and I were originally going to stay at a relatives ski lodge but it turns out they have already rented it out for that weekend. Does anyone have some good ideas on places to stay? Also any ideas of things to do while out there that weekend would be welcome.

Also, I am trying to decide if I need to Rent an SUV or if just renting a regular full size car going to good enough.

try this website.
http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/colorado/northwest/breckenridge i know there are some decent rates on accom....I booked my accom. through a site similar to this one and got a place for $120/ngt sleeps 8, during reading week which is a good deal. I thinkt his site may have similar rates. |

I also use www.vrbo.com for lodging, there are some good discounts and you don't need to worry as all of the renters are legit |

is it normal for resorts and resort towns in the US to not do anything about roads in winter condition? snow, ice, etc?????
i went to mammoth and even winter tires would have been almost useless because there was no salt put down. everything was a giant sheet of ice.
i hope colorado is not like that too.

I remember going to winter park years ago and my dad rented an SUV but it was not AWD for some reason, so there wasn't much advantage over a regular car. Looks like I am going to rent the SUV and hope it is actually AWD.
Anybody have recommendations for things to do around Breck after you leave the slopes for the day? |

There is a brewery in Breck... forgot the name.
But the beer is great and the onion rings fantastic... Oh and if you are from the east coast you might want to be prepared for some altitude sickness... |

Pizza: Downstair's at Eric's and Giampietro Pasta & Pizzeria
Pasta: Rasta Pasta Dinner: South Ridge Seafood Grill and Modis ($$$) Michael's (Italian $$) and you have to do Crepes a la Carte on Main St, just flat out awesome! There are a couple of sports bars if you walk up and down main street, Ullr's is one that comes to mind Snowboard gear, since I believe Scorer's shop closed down, I would recommend Mountain Wave, say hi to John and mention Mike and Cindy from Dallas sent you. |

This week has been a good week for snow and the passes closed due to snow. I was thankful to have my 4wd and even more thankful to get through the tunnel before it closed too. It's better to be safe than sorry. In Colorado, they do NOT salt. Instead they use a chemical that isn't any more harmful to your car than salt, however it doesn't attract the wildlife. Putting salt on the roads brings the animals down from the mountains since they are hungry and many end up as road-kill so the solution they use in CO is to put down a different chemical in congruance with really fine gravel to give you the traction you need. CO is also very good at plowing when they know a dump is starting and they keep at it until the snow stops. In the end it's still better than 2wd. However, just because you have 4wd you still need to drive carefully even SUVs end up on the side of the road when they speed and hit black ice.

I'd go with a 4wd suv or front wheel drive car. I was just up in Summit county with a rear wheel drive SUV and got stuck during the big dump this last week. If it snows between Breck and Eisenhower tunnel and you're in a 2wd vehicle you'll never make it up the pass mang

Ask a Cab in Breck for the Happy Hour specials and he'll give you a pamplet with every special in town.

I was surprised to see this as a hot topic as i posted this in December.
But i do appreciate the new contributions as i bought the Epic Mix pass for this coming season and have already tentatively planned 4, 4-5 day trips out west.

Luckily i have friends that live in Denver and Boulder, so pretty much only buy the plane ticket out there. But, i make sure i buy plenty of drinks, for whomever is putting me up, when we are out as repayment for letting me crash on their couch.

Water, drink lots of water. Also eat a lot of bananas, the potassium is very helpful in preventing altitude sickness. |
