Also which one's better Summit or Bear Mt for free ride snowboarding? |

With school back in session, tickets shouldn't sell out. Weekdays is always your best best to go riding because weekend is when most people can go. Freeriding is best at Snow Summit.

so far it's been pretty cool during the weekdays. There is like a 5 min wait for the main lifts but all the other ones are no wait. I have a midweek pass there, so im up there about twice a week. I was up on tuesday and the snow was really good. It was all soft and there was still some untouched powder if you go through the trees. Free riding is best at summit but bear also has some sick tree lines if you go up to the top. I'll be up there tomorrow..anyone else going?

Weekdays are prime days to go at bear. Theres still some fresh stuff from the downfall last week. watch out for geronamo, when I went it was choppy as all hell. but everything else is nice.

when did you ride Geronimo? was it the first weekend it opened? the difference is night and day between crowds on weekends and weekdays. free riding is better at summit but since your one a week day try riding some of bear's stuff and catching the shuttle to summit. the 8in. they got this week should be pretty groomed.
watch out for black ice on the 38. it hadnt snowed in days but the melted snow and freezing temps in the morning caused a few cars to spin out even though they weren't going very fast. particularly the curves that were in the shade. |

anyone know how much longer the 38 is than the 330/18 was? It used to take me 2 hours from la on the 330 but since it closed i've been taking the 18 on waterman and it's been about an extra 30 mins.. I've only taken the 38 once and it was during a busy day and chains were required so that trip took 5 hours.. so im trying to figure out if the 38 is shorter than the way im currently taking now...

I'm also going from la and it took me about 40 min longer. That is with light traffic and chains required.

i think the closure of the 330 is really messing up traffic patterns. everyone that used to take the 330 is now on the 38 and the increased traffic is causing accidents or excessive slowing when chains are required. I've seen 3 cars on the 38 that fell over the side. not good.
I would take the back way through lucrene valley but be careful sundays with vegas trafic returning if you leave the mtn late. that or take the 18 through arrowhead and to the 210 fwy. The 38 is the closest distance wise back to LA (since the 330 is still closed) but during bad weather the other options are much better. |

My co worker has been going up every weekend...he is pretty new to boarding so I am not quite sure if he understands the difference between great snow and bad snow... he has been saying its awesome up there...but from his description, it sounds as though he is just excited to be up there riding and the snow really isnt all that great unless ofcourse it dumps like it did that one week.

The 18 thru running springs is what we had to take most of last season. Not a bad drive when the wknd snowplayers don't clog the roads. I think they don't understand what "turnout 1/4 mile" means, or they r so freaked out driving in the mtns that they don't see the line of 30 cars behind them. It's cool. Whatevers. Just relax, chill behind the wheel, get in ur "driving zone zen" with some tunes. Just don't get all aggro cuz its not worth it Oops off topic now
The 38, although more scenic, is about 18 miles more of mtn driving and like anything, just a matter of getting used to. Happy trails |

I went over the weekend and the it was decent. It was relatively hot and there were a lot a people. Westridge at Summit was pretty fun and probably the most ridden.

I actually work at Snow Summit and Saturdays are definitely the busiest days. On the weekdays there are no lift no (walk right up or less than 5 min a chair 9 at bear) and you get cheaper lift tickets. the snow is still fun and the temps will be cooling off later this week. Summit has more terrian to freeride and Bear is park oriented so it depends on what you want to do. the cool thing though is they have a free shuttle every 1/2 hour that goes between the two resorts so you can actually ride both resorts (your lift ticket is good at both). if you have the opportunity i would go up during a weekday to enjoy the resort to yourself.

i thought ticket prices stayed the same throughout the week?
mid week riding at bear or summit is the best. Its the 4th season I've had a pass and its so much better without all the crowds. Whenever I am there on weekends I make it a point to avoid chair 9. |

Went this past weekend and it was fun. Chair 2 is really crowded though and it started to get slushy in the afternoon.

I heard there was a double fatality today on the 38 so they had to close the hwy up for awhile so it sucks for those that were heading up on the 38.

I just came back from Summit two days ago and it was damn hot. The snow was already turning to slush by 11. I hope the weather drops again.
Does anyone know how long hwy 330 will be out?

Wow... 1-2 Years. Thought they were going to fix it during the summer. Taking the 18 all the way up is a much longer drive..

sundays are pretty good. Saturdays are the one day you want to avoid. from experience even if there are ski clubs out there, the crowd is still less than any other day.

How are the conditions after all these warm January days? I am thinking about going on Monday (1/31). Is it really icy and hard packed right now in the mornings? What time is it softening up?

The coverage at both Bear and Summit is still very good considering how warm it has been. The mornings are typically pretty hard and it softens up around 9am.

Yup chance of fresh on Sunday night but the cold temps of late has allowed 20+ hours of snowmaking. Conditions I heard r still pretty decent considering...

I just read that CalTrans announced that the front side (330) to BB and SV will be closed for two years. I'm usually the last to know these things so it's probably not news. I think i'm skipping a season pass for BB next season. Ugh!
Looks like MH might be pretty crowded for the next couple years. Great.

You gotta think that BM/SS are hurting because of both the closure and snow. It's been a while since i've seen them do so many discounts and specials. Free food credits etc!? Wow. They must be needing riders. Any employees offer some insight?

Bear gets 3/4 of their money during Xmas. Thankfully it snowed right when schools were letting out. I dont know what the books say but I'm sure its a way of getting the people who are currently up there to spend more money eating there as well.

just came back from a one-day turnaround. snow was icy in the morning but once it melted it was better. some parts were super slow (chair 6). i had just waxed my board too so i know that wasnt it. all the features they put it were great. but all i could bring myself to do were a few kickers since i was riding with a sling on my right shoulder.
snow is expected this week and again 23rd of feb. hopefully the roads arent too bad, in terms of conditions and traffic. bring chains people. |
