Direct Link To This Post Topic: Is this common in snowboard culture-
    Posted: Jan/08/2011 at 7:00pm
So today I was going down a green and I fell at this slight hill cross-section where the green intersects with a blue.

I was looking up the hill for my friend. Three other random kids (they were friends, but not my friends) at least 20 seconds away, meaning they had plenty of time to see me, were coming down the hill from the blue and passing me. Two of them just went around me but the 3rd kid made an effort to go right next to me and do a hard brake thus showering me with snow, then he continued to cruise down while him and his friends laughed.

I don't understand why they did this. Is being such a punk common in snowboard culture so should I just expect it? As far as I know it was obvious I was a beginner so why he trolled me, I don't know...

I hate kids who pull crap like that.  Everybody has to start somewhere and at some point they were a beginner too.  Don't expect it to much, it shouldn't happen again as most people on the mountain are respectful of others.
I only spray my friends haha.

Just laugh it off man. He probably did that because you are part of the group. It wouldnt be cool if someone did that to someone they have no relation to.

I only do that to my friend in good fun. No harm by it.

I've seen boarders do it to skiers and vice versa capitalizing on the rivalry, although that's recently gone by the wayside.  More than likely it's just punk ass kids being punk ass kids like the ones who always knock down my damn garbage cans.  One punk ass kid can't possibly speak for the whole community.

it happens man. laugh it off. at least he didn't hit you. you'll laugh if you see it done to someone else right? i was just coming out of my concussion and some rider spray me, i gave him a thumbs up wit a smile and he unstrapped and walked to help me out.
i'm not saying that i'll do it to a stranger, but sometimes depending on the line that i took, someone might get spray unintentionally. if someone gets a good spray, it deserves a good laugh. it's all part of da game. just laugh bout it.

Well it seems the general mentality of the situation of is "laugh it off".

I'm older and am coming into snowboarding late in the game, so I wasn't expecting teens to be like that on a green beginner hills, especially since it was the family zone, lol.

And for those who said it was an accident it wasn't. This guy saw me and came bombing down the mountain, the path was huge. His friends went around me with ease but he came straight at me and went out of his way to do it on purpose. I think I took so much offense because he did it and even his friends were surprised (it was a hugee spray) and were laughing but shouting "omg dude why did you do that" as they zipped away.

Anyway thanks for sharing. I'll laugh it off and make sure I scurry off the side faster next time I fall. Seems like I missed out on some etiquette I should have learned earlier.

my friend did that once by pure accident to someone in middle of run trying to avoid him(couldn't see him downhill)! raised his hand, said sorry and we all moved on!

I personally take these things in good spirit anyway!

I cartwheeled once trying a new jump. 3 Guys on lift where clapping and laughing. I gave them a big salute and a bow and kept on riding with a smile... no one got hurt and all is good. LOL

I think its annoying when people do that.. for some reason people see snowboarders as dousches and the skiiers as not, and people like that just make more people think so.

Well, they did it to you because you were sitting on the slope and probably in the way rather than on the side but mainly because you were on your ass and some douche boarders have a thing to spray people on their asses.
Sessions sucks hairy monkey balls, the end.

Going out of your way and intentionally spraying someone you don't know is kinda lame. Obviously when it's unavoidable that's a different story. Saying it's just snow and to get over it is pointless because the issue is clearly the principle and intent of the action, not being covered in snow. If people really are doing it in good-natured fun and it is understood then it wouldn't be a big deal but I can't imagine that is the case most of the time.

Yeah, I am older too and new to snowboarding (never skied).  It seems the boarding culture is a microcosm of society.  There are good and bad people out there.  I learned early on that if you take a break on the trail, get to the side.  If you fall, try to get to the side as quickly as possible to avoid becoming a speed bump (or mogul Wink).  That dick that sprayed you...he will have something bad happen to him.  Karma's a bitch.  Just keep boarding bro.

That'd make everything easier, not to mention clean up the image of newbie snowboarders a little bit. But I think this case you were an unlucky statistic.

It's more of a culture of humans that need to be an a$$ than snowboarders.  But at the same time, be glad it's something playful like that since you are sitting in the middle of a run rather than an angry old skier yelling at you or better yet stopping to make it point to let you know how "wrong and dangerous" you are.  (I hate people that are super self-righteous.)

i wouldn't say it is common.

i don't know the exact location where you were waiting, but please don't sit in the middle of the run (or anywhere on it for that matter).

if you are waiting, make yourself highly visible and wait on the SIDE.

at the same time, don't obstruct the trail.

that's the most common reason why people get plowed.

What is spraying somebody going to tell them? Even the original poster says "I don't understand why they did this". A person telling him how "wrong and dangerous" they are is a lot more better if you want to educate people than spraying them.

If you fall it's cool to lay there to collect your bearings, but if you're waiting for someone, get off to the side.  I usually chill behind a tree, fence or other barrier when waiting for the girlfriend.  In the middle makes you a speed bump and is kind of rude.  Once you get in the terrain park and fall on a jump, move out of the way as fast as possible, not only for your safety since its hard to see the other side, but also to keep the wait down.  It's proper etiquette to get out of the way even if your arm is broken.
Never miss an opportunity to keep your mouth shut. Thanks Gramps

On one hand, that was disrespectful and immature, and the kids are likely over-privileged d-bags who should die in a car fire.

On the other, you got snow on you.  Where you were snowboarding.  On a snow-covered mountain, possibly while it was snowing.  BFD.

eventually people will spray you and you will spray people whether intentionally or not. personally, even if i'm the one getting sprayed, i don't really mind, and if it's a huge plume, chances are it's blower and epic. no way you're having a bad day with those conditions.

I truly enjoy seeing both the pessimistic and optimistic points of views when it comes to good vs evil...

The ironic part is which side is evil...the sprayer or the sitter.

haha you are dealing with snowboarders. Most of them are teenaged boys or middle age men with a teenaged boy mindset. Just laugh it off, they expect you to get upset. If you see them again, spray them back. Otherwise just brush it off.

idk, I'm a snowboarder and have all ages of skiers zooming by way too close to me all the time...I know they're attempting to show off their "mastery" of control, but it's pretty pathetic when they're just riding down a groomer.  Give me some damn room to get my turn on!
