yeah, seems like i was wrong estimating crowds, looks like northstar was packed to the brim per usual. also with that much snow, seems too hard to ride...hopefully some more comes in next week so i can fight with the weekend crowds next week.

did anyone hit squaw?

Thursday was horrific going up, the smart ones did 30-35 up the hill. We almost got smacked by a UPS truck and trailer barrelling up the chain control lanes/right shoulder going an easy 50 mph. Another guy didn't realize that traffic was slowing and moving left and damn near slapped us doing over 55 on the ice. That bastard stuffed his nose into the snow bank after locking up on the ice. I'm glad.

We were only 100 yards back from a truck in this picture. This was I-80 on Thursday about 10 am. Dust on THICK ice. I'm so glad we have Open Country's and 4WD. Oh, and 4WD is no license to kill folks! You have just as much traction as those with chains on. Ask the Subi doing donuts across all three lanes stopping. Bald tires maybe.Clap

Oh and a huge thumbs up to Cal/Nev Trans on the roadways. Here's Reno Sat Early AM.

^been there, done that first pic and worse.

riding the smaller resorts south of tahoe is 90% less traffic (usually), but all the hair pin turns slide you around a bit even w/ chains (mine are getting pretty worn down).

as far as snowboarding in those conditions, I don't mind as long as I can feel my way to the trees...then it's on

Yeah those little two lane switchbacks are demons. 431 this week folks were pretty well behaved. Coming home you have the pretty typical local crowd willing to bear down on anyone if it means 5mph faster. Meh. I know 50 gets iffy when the whiteouts blow through, but I don't like that highway in any weather. If you take 88/89 I feel for you though. That ish sucks.

Riding in snow is no problem, it never 'pisses snow'. It's kind of nice to already be in the area and have people back out of trips, leaving the resorts nice and empty, because the forecast shows it storming pretty bad.
I'm a wuss when it gusts. The ride up on the lift sucks so bad.

OK IT'S TIME TO PULL THIS THREAD/POLL BACK OUT.  It's practically Christmas, and we've had several storm systems come through only to slam into the wall (and head north or south, or both) and give us nothing.  As much as I love the white ribbon of death (and it is nice to have a n* pass this year so at least there are a few hits on the trail) WE NEED SNOW.

So how long will it be from today, December 5, 2011?  I can't wait until christmas, for christ's sake

My bet is 2 weeks, and then after that the storms will keep rolling HEAVY in January.

I'm so frustrated with the snow at Tahoe!  Maybe I'm just too spoiled with the ridiculous season we got last year.  Thankfully Heavenly and N* have some major snow making abilities or I'd be bored to death right now.

Last I heard the season should really start in 2 weeks.  Pray for snow

I'm not really worried about it, since it's not something I can change.  When the snow comes, I'll be heading up, but until then, I'll do other things.

Oh the mountain's will be doing everything they can to get snow on the ground for the Christmas vacationers. I'd assume it'd be a pretty huge loss if they couldn't make it for the major holidays.

The MJO is stalling out so now with the PNA moving negitive, with a stalled MJO not pumping up the storms, we might get some weaker storms after the 13th.  depended on the strength of the storms we might get some big ones, but there should be some fresh before x-mas no matter what.  Not sure if it'll be enuff to get the mountains 100% open, so we'll see.

Headed that way for New Years, and starting to get worried Confused.  Hopefully there's a few good dumps before then so I'm not stuck fighting holiday n00bs on the man made groomer patches at Heavenly.

Don't want to have to resort to plan B:  a plastic sled, a handle of Jack Daniels and a GoPro.

well, since the dumping hasn't happened already, I'd actually prefer if we had a freight train january.  December is full of holiday crowds and traffic, anyway + there's never any hotel rooms.  Unfortunately, january around here has a really bad record of being dry...at least within the past 6 years

This is usually my attitude towards everything, but when it comes to snow, I would like it to snow everyday during winter. Snow only during the night when I am actually at a resort so I can enjoy fresh pow and blue bird conditions.

Yeah except for that one madhouse day with all the people/avalanches in Little Cottonwood.

Not sure which resorts aren't open, Shooey, (except for Mt Rose for us Reno locals) but none of them have good conditions and the backcountry is VERY lame at the moment

yeah, I kinda don't even want to bother with the holiday chaos unless the glades are ridable...and, even then, it looks like will probably only be enough for my rock board

I've been to N* about three days so far.  On saturday they had three blue trails open (all white ribbons of death), and one was a nice park run with a few small-medium booters, hits and assorted features.  At this point it's all blown snow but in my mind it's worth it to get up there and lap the place for a few hours.  I wouldn't pay for tickets.

Haven't been to the Heav yet because it's a bit further away for me and it has been windy on the days I was available

I hope it dumps.  I was at heavenly after thanksgiving and the manmade was decent, and the park was better than I figured it'd be, but it'd be nice to see more than 10% of the mountain open.

There really wasn't even that much snow then.  I couldn't even imagine how one could be created.  If you saw the chute that guy died in you'd be like WTF.  Why would anyone attempt to ride that right now.

Well there's always an upside.  I haven't had to use chains yet.  Sunshine makes it feel like Spring skiing.  It's not crowded.  Hotels are cheaper.  & the resorts are charging a lot less.  I used the Skifest 2 for 1 at Squaw.  Not too often I can ride there for $29.50.

just check http://www.noaa.gov for south lake tahoe and it says that this coming storm is only gonna bring little snow. sucks. boreal has the best snow right now since they've been blowing snow all day every day.

while it is an unusually dry season so far, we definitely got spoiled BIG TIME last year, which just makes this dry spell so agonizing. i'm heading to mammoth for new years and feel really bad for my east coast crew who will be spending about 1200 for 3 days of boarding...

I was pleasantly surprised that some of the small resorts are doing a good job of snowmaking, most notably Diamond Peak.  Far better than Squaw Valley which has been a total fail so far this season.

I'm heading up to kirkwood for a couple days tomorrow, mostly just to get my feet back underneath and to check out my cabin.

Gotta remember that we had zero snow from the beginning of January through the middle of Feb last year, so hopefully the dry spell is just getting itself out of the way earlier this year!

Having that epic season last year is like feeding me kobe steak. And now with this dry season, it's like mother nature is feeding me leftover meatloaf....I really hope La Nina pulls through and that phenomenon they call "Pineapple Express" really helps us out. I'll tell my Hawaiian homies to send some of that Aloha Spirit over! ****Agonizingly waiting****

The one upside about Squaw is that your pass is good for Alpine too right?  So that gives you two runs at least to hit in one day.  (Red Dog and Roundhouse lifts.)  Still, I've been to both resorts and it's quite depressing compared to last season.
