i was thinking about getting one of those little shovels to make kickers and whatnot, i know Dakine and burton make them. I have a backpack that would hold one nicely. I was wondering if anyone uses one of those, or if they are worthless. the ones i saw were like 50 bucks so im not sure about it. let me know

the Dakine and burton ones are re-branded. they're made by black diamond or voile. i cannot remember which.

BCA and Voile are my personal favorites. I lean towards Voile I guess since we have two of them.

would you say that they are pretty effective and usefull, or just a waste of money?  I would like to get one but i dont want to if i will just end up resorting to using my board as a shovel instead

I have one. Its fun to go out with some pals into the back country and just build some kickers. Try to convince some of your pals to buy some as well. That way your not the only one digging. Overall for usefulness id say 8/10. The weight doesn't really make much of a diff in your backpack.

the funny thing is that the main point of a shovel is to dig someone out of an avalanche. i hope that anyone who goes in the backcountry knows what they are doing and carries a beacon when necessary.

why not just hook some sort of 50-ft. streamer to you, and have it release as soon as you notice the snow breaking in an avalanche. this beacon stuff is nonsense i tell u.  Angry
