I couldn't find the "Search" feature for the forums to look, so I posted a new thread.
Anyone board Las Vegas? It's where I live so it's only an hour up the mountian. It's pretty small and icy with just 2 lift, but tickets are only $50 and like I said, I can leave my house, go boarding and come home! |

I was at Bear the other day talking to these guys from LV. We started talking about BrianHead and the resort up above LV. The gist of what they said was it's not worth it unless you just want to get your snow fix. They usually hit BH or even So Cal resorts. Which is why they were at Bear.
How far is LV from Mammoth time wise? Post back if you go and let us all know. I get stuck in LV sometimes so if i had an option to go boarding instead of sitting in some smoke-filled casino stuffing myself with cheap food then I am all for it. |

Lee Canyon, the one I mentioned, is the only resort I know of on Mount Charleston, but it's only 40min or so away. Maybe your brother is talking about something on the other side of the mountain? I'll have to look into that.
That being said, Brian Head, Big Bear and Summit are all only about 2 hours away...it's just the drive back after a day of boarding that I'm not looking forward to, not wanting to find a place to stay for the night. Mammoth is 6 hours. Lee Canyon really doesn't compare...only 2 lifts...but it's gets your weekend fix. If I take a weekday off work it's not crowded at all. I'm going this Sunday (superbowl whatever) and there is a competition up there so I'm not sure how bad it'll be. But I also go to Reno every few months so I'm looking at hitting up Borreal as it's more park friendly and way cheaper then the other 7 tahoe resorts. |

the only rider I know in LV mostly goes to Brian Head, UT. she said that LV was filled with jackasses so it wasn't even worth it. never been there myself, but LV isn't exactly the destination I'd head to with my board bag

Agreed. I would not come here to go boarding...but I would go boarding if I were here! LOL!
I haven't been up to BrianHead yet, and all my friends here that board go up there...but Big Bear is the same distance, and it was pretty fun. I need to decide if my next day trip will be to BrianHead or to Snow Summit which is right next to Big Bear. |

agreed, Brian Head is what i hear as the better choice for LV riders. I hear the snow qaulity is better with less crowds and cheaper tickets. if you want info on bear/summit try the thread talking about how it's going this season.

In response to how it is in Bear. No Bueno mi amigo. December was good. Then Jan hit and we're dry as a bone. Like the rest of Cali. even Mammoth hasn't had significant snow until just recently. It hasn't helped that down the mountain it's been pretty warm 70-80's for the last few weeks. We actually went swimming the other day. BUT they have been able to blow snow for some time so you know Bear will be better than Mt High in the long run. The exposure at MH doesnt help.
Honestly if you have a choice between Bear and BH I would pick BH if they've had decent snow. It's like spring already here. We'll probably get some good storms soon though. |

The rest of the US gets dumped with tons of snow. We get summer weather. It's nice to be in Cali. That's why Biggie and LL rapped about it. "I'm going, going, back, back to Cali, Cali..." They wanted to get first chair in the morning then go hang out in shorts and a t shirt in the afternoon in the middle of winter.
We havent got natural snow. But Bear has been able to blow snow. Thats why check if BH has had significant snow and chances are it will be better at BH. It's always less crowded than Bear and definitely cheaper. Plus you can stop in Mesquite and eat a Prime Rib for like a nickle. ;) Snow Jam has their show in LV i think Dec or Jan. I know that they give away BH lift tix at their booth. You can always come to the SD one and they give away lots of lift tix there too. They're all mid-week tix though. |

Hit up LVSSR today. Competition was just a few jibs over on the bunny area so it did not close down either of the lifts, so that's good.
Having no lines at the lift is easily the best part of the resort...I must have gotten 15-20 runs in between 10am and 3:30pm. Problem is the lift are slow and the runs are short. they were well groomed, and the jumps are nice, as well as some decent park features all on lift 2. Lift 1 has some nice areas for carving. And thy do allow you to go off resort to some powder and tree areas. Oh, and it was a nice warm 40degrees! LOL! But tell you what...what that sun dips behind the mountain just after 3:00, the whole place turns to ICE! The last run of the day always sounds like we're making slushies! All in all, LVSSR is definitely NOT a place you are going to come to town specifically to go boarding at. But if you're coming to vegas anyway, and it's not to much of a hassle, or your stopping through on your way to Tahoe, then I'd say it's worth the 1 hour drive and $50 ticket to get away from all the Vegas lights... |

San Antonio? Well they haven't built that Ski Resort in Texas yet so you're out of luck.
BUT since youre in TX, if you want great BBQ go check out The Salt Lick (North of SA, before Austin) or Rudy's BBQ (all over TX) both have some of the best BBQ in TX, IMHO. Or if you want the best, Snow's BBQ in Lexington. That's way north of SA. I've never been there though but hoping to next trip. |

The storm brought in a whopping 7 inches of snow! LOL!
Went up yesterday and it's the best it's been all season. morning runs were aweseome! Still not tahoe, but for an hour's drive from downtown Las Vegas, you can't beat it. Supposed to be another storm coming in this weekend... |

Mammoth is a 6.5 hour drive. So then you have to calculate in drive, gas, lift ticket, food, and overnight stay. Not worth it unless I'm making a family vacation out of it.
Big Bear, Brian Head or Eagle Point make more sense. 3.5 hour drive can make it a day trip not requireing lodging. Problem with that is driving 3 hours home after a full day of boarding. However, the local shop here had a round trip shuttle going to Eagle Point leaving at 5am for $40! Whish I had found out about that early enough to plan for it...
But we got another 10 inches of snow this last weekend and after the snow it was a bright and sunny day with fresh powder! My friend went to Brian Head that weekend and said it was dumping the whole time so badly that she only got 4 runs in and couldn't see 2 feet in front of her face. ...I think she's crazy for not staying up longer... |

LVSSR is running a deal right now for local resteraund workers on Mon-Tues and for chamber of comerce workers on Wed-Thurs for $35 for full day lift tickets!
And we've been getting some decent snow from the last couple storms! Now I just gotta get some of my bar buddies to take a day off of work... |

Got some trace amounts of snow last night.
Storm coming in this weekend and there is a very good chance of 3-8 inches on Sunday/Monday! That's pretty damn good for so late in the season in Las Vegas. This sunday will be my last trip of the season :( |

LVSSR does get a lot of sunny days and it's pretty good elevation (8510" at base lodge), so the freeze/thaw/ice is gonna be a problem.
The good is the peak of that mtn is a whopping 11,200"...that's higher than anything in tahoe. I'd image there's a lot of people hiking on up past chair two (9,370") I've also read that late season is the best time there, with (relatively) a lot of deep spring pow days |

Yeah...you get to the top of the lift and it's very plain to see you can hike quite a bit and still have a pretty clear run. I've read that in the next 5 years or so they plan to add 5-10 more lifts and go further up the mountian.
But yeah...the ice is pretty bad, especially this late in the season. That's why this will be my last trip. But we shall see... |

Go to Eagle Point. I think you can get round trip bus transportation from Vegas to EP for $40.00. Great deal! Plus, the runs are pretty rad. And their lifts don't close for wind, unlike BH.

Powder and Sun Ride Shop had a deal the other week with round trip transport to eagle point for $40, but I thought that was a one time deal. I don't see anything on their website about a regularly scheduled shuttle.

And yet the roads are completely open...there's 1 good thing about Vegas. |

snowed ALL DAY today. wind was crazy, but I've never boarded in Vegas with so much powder! This is my first season boarding so I'm sure my perception of alot of powder is different then most, but it was AWESOME!
Firt day i've been where you actually needed chains, but that was only early morning. Oh...and I finally found the hidden rout to the carving tree run between the lifts. SWEET! I think today has convinced me to go ahead with a season pass to Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard resort for next season... |

Got another 10" of snow...base is at 99" when it's normally in the low 70"s. And we have another storm coming in this weekend.
I already packed my boots away, but I think I'm going to try to fix my schedule so I can go at least one more time this season. |

WOW! More snow today...base is over 100 when it's normally in the 70s.
I'm planning on going up again on the 4th but the projected end of season is the 10th and I'm afraid the conditions might not be good and end up hurting myself. But it's so good right now, I can't imagine it will get much worse in just a week... |

I don't have anything to compare it to, so I think it's great!
Website says they have 25 features, and here are some pics: http://www.skilasvegas.com/darkside/features/gallery.html The configuration is different now, as they have adjusted for some competitions. Along with the 2 picnic tables, flat box, rainbow and other smaller rails, I know they added a wall at the bottom and a rainbow rail going over a car. All features are off a single lift with a couple trails to go by. If you stay to the left, they moved the tables down there, but normally that is where they have the smaller rail, smaller box and 2 smaller jumps for begginners. The main line has 4 or 5 larger jumps that Im guessing are anywhere between 40 and 60 footers. I have friends that go up and ONLY stay in the park, so I'd say it's pretty decent. |

applaud your noob enthusiasm, but, in the 5 years I've been glued to the forecasts, "20-40% chance of snow" means you're not getting any (...for your sake, hope I'm wrong this time)

You were right...there is no longer any chance of snow up there tomorrow. But still, a high of 46 is better then a high of 60 and I will still be heading up tomorrow for my last trip of the season!

the weather man is taunting me with a 40% chance of snow next thursday and temps in the mid 30s (and 30% chance snow friday). These spring storms are usually tricky, one day magical events that you have to really keep an eye on and be ready to pounce at the last second...or you will miss them.
just got the coupon code and ordered the bindings. Shipping isn't free on these community point coupons, but paying $11 for $200 bindings is fine with me have fun and make that last day worthwhile (try/learn a new trick?) |

Yeah, it says we will get some thursday but I can't take any more time off work. I'm sure this will be my last trip.
I'm still trying to get my jumps solid so my next step is taking it to the bigger kickers instead of the little bumps I've been doing. I'm actually curious to see if they have any plans on the hill for the summer... |
