I'll be at Kirkwood today through Friday.  Anyone else riding there this week?  Should be good, other than a few warm storms moving through tomorrow.

I'm hoping to be there on Thurs (24th), if I get the OK from the wife.  They are getting pounded from all these storms.  Pow for everyone!!!

considering the absolutely massive amount of snow tahoe got recently (almost 9 feet of fresh in the past week), kirkwood is one of the few resorts steep enough to be worth it...unless you don't mind being confined to a few narrow groomers (which can be really fun with 6 foot transitions at each sideWink)

I didn't make it up there until yesterday(Monday) and we had to wait a bit until they plowed the road over the Carson Spur. By the time we got up there, only chair 10 was running up to the top and we had to search to find some pow stashed. fortunately, we know the mountain pretty well and got some decent runs in.

They didn't open up chair 6 until after 1PM. A couple of runs way off to the left from there and then they opened up the Sentinel bowl at bit after 2PM. I only had enough left for one run, but it was epic. I'll try to get some video up soon.

Unfortunately, I wasn't the first over to Sentinel. By the time I got over there, it looked like a minefield of noobs that had fallen in the pow. I just sliced right through them until I fell when my buddy yelled out to me and I tried to look around a find him. Prolly the best video of the day.

So nice and much more pow on the way through the weekend. Sucks that I can't get back up there anytime soon.

^LOL That's what my resort looked like - basically a bunch of heads and torsos poking out of the snow.

I actually didn't have that much trouble.  Yeah, I fell and few times, had to walk back out a couple, but I was only on a 163 cm full camber.  I'd lap a run a couple of times and the same people would be lying in the same spot.  Shouldn't take that long to get up, even in those depths.

hope it's still good late this weekend

Nice vid dking.  I know exactly where that is.  If you go furter to the left (riders left) more towards chair 9 and 7, you can drop into a nice gully near Cave Rock where there is some sick pow stashes.  That's what I love about Kirkwood.  Even when there are a ton of people and they only have a few lifts open, if you know the mountain well, you can find some untouched stashes.  There are plenty of other spots, but don't want to advertise too much, or they will become known a little more then what they are.  Looks like you had a good time.

It was a great time. I know where you're talking about and I usually head more left, if not all the way to Palisades. But first run I just wanted to bomb straight down. So much fun... wish I was still there... Geek

Was trying for tomorrow (Friday) but now have to help a friend move. Either Sunday, or early next week.   Have to see what las minute chores come my way. Either way, I'm riding within the next 4-6 days. Can't let these pow days go by the way side.

I agree, get it while you can...think of the starving children on the east coast...insert cliche' here.

I was just up last sun/mon (not kwood)...but am thinking about going up again next weekend Embarrassed.  My employer isn't gonna like it, but sometimes you just gotta make it happen.

Anyone know if Kirkwood is talking about extending the season?  I'm looking at the Spring pass, but they are saying they might only be open until May 1?  that seems a bit early with that amount of snow?

Any guesses or rumors floating around?

May 1 is already extended. They normally close mid-April. Heck, Northstar only "extended" until 4/24.

No guess on whether they'll move the date any further. BTW, it's not about having snow, it's about finances. If people are still going, they'll stay open. Usually, the weather warms up in April and most people stop thinking about going to the snow.

Some resorts re-open on Memorial Day because lots of people go up. Last year Kirkwood (and Squaw, I think) ran some lifts on the fourth of July weekend for the same reason and had quite a few people there. Both of those will probably happen again this year with all the snow.

May 1 is definitely an extension for KWood.  Like dking said, they usually close in mid April.  It would be nice if they would stay open as late as they can (mid May to end of May), but a lot more goes into the closing date than what we probabaly know.  Besides the amount of snow and the amount of people still hitting the mountain, I'm sure it also has to do with staffing levels and a few other things.  Not sure if the resort is bound by a certain contract through the county, but I swear I heard something about that a few years backConfused.  If most of the employees get regular jobs for the summer time, half of them may be gone towards the end of the season.  I could be way off, but just throwin it out there.

I'm sure the Wood will open again for the 4th of July especially with all this late snow.  I didn't go last year, but I heard they had lift access to certain parts of the mountain which you had to hike to once the lift dropped you off at the top.  Heard the hike wasn't too far and from the pics I saw, it looked like a lot of fun.  Not sure what lifts were open, or if it was just a single lift, but still sounded preety cool to be able to ride the mountain in July.

If they open for July 4, do you think they will open it up for next season's passholders?

If I remember correctly, they don't offer a deal to previous pass holders, or pass holders for the upcoming year.  Not 100% sure on that, but I'm preety sure you have to pay a small fee for a lift ticket for the 4th of July, whether or not you have a pass.

Haha, it depends on the resort but Mammoth usually always ends their season on July 4th.

FYI, I think that price is only good for a few more days. Also, you can get more of a discount if you can find a Costco that still has the Kirkwood cash cards (20% discount).

There's a thread about it...

the past few years, kirkwood would offer a free lift ticket to people with a season pass to another resort.  does anyone know if they have the same deal for this year?  thanks

the best deal at the wood is to just ride without a ticket -- I have a number of friends who save money that way . . . .

bryman, good point.  I always get a pass so I don't worry about it, but everytime I take a few friends during the week who buy lift tickets, they never check.  I've always been tempted to tell my buddies to just try it, but I don't want to cause any issues.  Out of 15 days I rode last year, they probably chekced my pass a few different times and maybe on 5 out of the 15 days.  Just find a chair that has a lazy liftie and he/ she won't carre either way.  It seems like they always check on chair 6, yet 5, 7, and chair 10 they never check, or at least when I've ridden.
