The mountain here in Las Vegas is scheduled to close on April 10th. My buddy said it gets really bad the last few week and people always break stuff cause of the horrible conditions. But these last couple weeks we have gotten more snow then I've ever seen and even had some really good pow days. But it's supposed to start warming up this week.
What is the latest in the season you would go boarding? |

I'll be going at least until the first weekend in April, but I wouldn't be surprised if we get two or three more weekends in. There's still snow and cold temps showing up in the 10 day forecast!

I'll be going until they close, I have no issue riding in slush, and the resorts usaully close sooner then they need to, around here anyway. I don't see any safety issue, but I'm not familar with your area either, so it may be different out there.

Well, I specifically got a board with magna traction because even mid season we get a lot of ice. We don't get to much snowfall and it never gets super cold her in Vegas, so I'm thinking that will help.
My buddy said the while last month of the season was bad, but the hill will be open 2 more weeks and I'm going up next weekend. If fact, I had already put all my gear away after the big storm last weekend until I heard there was more snow throughout this weekend. Here's hoping for the best... |

Unfortunately Mt wash closes april 24th, last year they still had a base of about 24' on closing day. I believe they are going to open for a day or 2 in late June, which is pretty badass. Its too bad they can leave half the mountain open till July or august and open up the other side for biking early as possible.

last weekend in april is when socal mountains are expected to close. it was roughly the same last season, but we had more consistent snow days last year as opposed to getting dumped the past week this year.

So then would you all go boarding up to the last day of the season?
It reached 70degrees here today, so it was probably 45-50 degrees up on the hill. And it's just gonna keep getting warmer... |

Well, I only started snowboarding in January, so this will only be my 7th time every riding and only my second time on my new gear. But I did SO MUCH better after getting my new gear that I really want to go again this season.
I just don't want to go one last time and have it be crappy. Or worse...get hurt. |

Copper is supposed to close April 24th but in the last 2 days they have gotten 22 inches of fresh powder. The problem is it gets so hot that even with these nice storms the snow melts super quick this time of year. I will say I don't remember there being close to this much snow left last season so at least there will be good riding until it closes for the year.

Just go out and board already. Spray some slush around and have a good time. Much better than sitting inside and wishing you would have gone. If the places around here were still open I'd be out there as much as possible. Late season riding is some of the most fun, because it's just that, riding! Get out and have fun!
I also can't see how late season is more "dangerous". Sure, there may be thinner snow and chances of grass/sticks/rocks being exposed, but just use your head and go around that stuff, or stay away from it all together. And if you do contact some of it, it's just a snowboard. I had way more fun this season by turning my "care factor". I didn't go out with the intentions of messing up my board, because who would, but once I started not focusing on that side of it I noticed myself having a lot more fun just being a dweeb and going all over the place.

I usually go the last day of the season (may 1st) just for the hell of it. It always falls on a weekend (sunday), so plenty of people come out and it's just a jam session.
bare spots aren't as much of a problem as variable snow conditions. It can be fast in one spot, then abruptly slow the next. You're more likely to hurt yourself than break your equipment (couple seasons back, I cracked a rib the last day...but kept riding) ...and slather on the sunblock like you were going to the beach |

Yeah...I'm more concerned with hurting myself then damaging my equipment as I am fairly inexperienced. This is my first season riding.

If you don't get hurt at least once snowboarding you aren't trying hard enough! Don't worry about it and enjoy the ride.

For me it's a no brainer...I go until the last day. It's spring slush, it's fun and the snow is soft so I don't know why you're so concerned. Stay away from the brown spots.

I'm only concerned because I don't know what to expect except what my buddy has told me, which is it's not a good idea here. I don't know hot different it is on other mountians, but I guess here in Las Vegas the snow base it really low so it gets worse at the end of the season.
I thought his issue was ice, but that doesn't make sense...it will be warmer, not colder. and I've done ice before. I'm just going to have to go and try it out for myself. If I don't like it, then I will know not to go so late next season. Tell you what, though, you guys have made me feel alot better about going later in the season, so thanks for that. ...well, except Pirahna and your cracked rib story! LOL!!! |

when you're having that much fun w/ all the natural adrenalin, even a cracked rib isn't going to stop you on the very last day. In the back of your mind, you know you have all summer/fall to heal.
don't worry about the snow base either...it only takes several inches to be able to ride over. do it...the last day is always special |

Hell...she'd have to pack up all 3 kids and drive an hour up the hill to come get me! That would probably be the end of my hobby...and I just started in January! |

I felt like I was surfing, hearing all that slush come down behind me while carving
So thanks for all the encouragement and convincing me to go. I am no longer worried about how late the season to ride...if the hill is open, I'm going boarding!!! |

The Northeast is having a relatively good season and we will be riding thru the end of April and maybe into May at Sugarloaf, Jay Peak and Killington. Cannon and Loon are closing April 17th.
