if you were someone advising me (which you er, are), where would you recommend I base myself if i were planning a trip to the states.
Considerations: 1. Money (season pass plus accommodation - nice and cheap). 2. Mountain (facilities, trail and pow). 3. No drama/agro/douchebags. I'll be there likely mid january to mid feb. So it just needs to be somewhere with a nice friendly peaceful vibe, cheap, not insanely overcrowded, with lots of off piste options, nice and fluffy and finally somewhere i wont get bored with. There, thats going to be very easy i assume and expect 400 posts in the next five minutes. |

I'm not going to lie, its the US man...anywhere you go really there is drama and douchebags...its snowboarding dude lol, and personally with me A month on the same mountain, id eventually get bored. If I were you I would base myself where a pass is good for more than one mountain, there are alot of places that do that...Im sure someone else can throw up some suggestions< id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall;" id="jsProxy" ="">

If you're going out during January then I would say go to Mammoth because Mammoth offers a January deal where you can board all weekday in January for only like 200 bucks plus lodging is pretty cheap out in Mammoth as well. Mammoth lift tickets are pretty expensive if you didn't know so that's a good deal. Then after your January promo is over, you can head over to June Mountain which is like 20 min north of Mammoth and with promo codes for your lift tickets, you can get lift tickets for like 30 bucks. Plus, Mammoth and June have awesome pow and you'll run into less ghetto people, just saying.

lol at the Canada pic  I seconded the Mammoth idea. 2. Mountain (facilities, trail and pow) - Awesome selection on steeps and trees run. If you get a pass there you can also shred at June mountain which is nearby. The place are big so you won't get bored that easily plus they have awesome park if you are into that. 3. No drama/agro/douchebags - It's not So Cal so it's pretty chill there lol. It's not close to a big city so not a lot of a holes out of the woodwork. Money wise though, it's hard to say because their lift tickets are pretty expensive. But FYI, they will start their MVP season pass sales this April 1st for $659 which is a really really good deal IMO http://www.mammothmountain.com/MountainActivities/Passes/MVP/ Jump on that if you can decide soon because that deal won't last long. There's nothing much to do besides snowboarding though over at Mammoth. There's a really small casino right at Bishop which is about 1 hour from Mammoth. There's also the options for Lake Tahoe but I think that will cost you more but they have great selection of multiple resorts there. Or go to Colorado (more expensive too)

if you know someone in the military they can score you mammoth tickets for some where around $65 for weekends and $45 for weekdays (i forget the exact prices). but you might run into some localism at mammoth. i know at times they get fed up with Los Angeles kids always coming up.
honestly i would recommend Whistler. the shops and restuarants provide ample things to do after boarding. if you're going in late january check ski-free deals.com if you can find someone to sell you a voucher from shell you can get 2for1 prices on lift tickets (those vouchers are also good for some CA mountains). i bought mine via craigslist from someone in oregon. getting around whistler is easy to with the bus system. let me know if you want more details. i was able to book a condo for 3days/4nights, 3 days boarding, food, airfare, car rental and a mini trip to vancouver (3days) for $700/person (we had 3 people).
tahoe and colorado might be other options you should pursue. hopefully someone else can chime in there.

I would check tahoe. I think you can get one pass that will get you in heavenly and northstar. And if you get tired of those two, homewood is a great cheap option that is next door.

South Shore Lake Tahoe
Shuttles/TART will get you to Homewood, Squaw, Kirkwood, Sierra at Tahoe, Alpine Meadows, Northstar, Diamond Peak. Heavenly can be as little as a 5 minute walk from so semi-affordable places to stay or again there is TART if you want to live further out. A pass to two of those places would be cheaper than a season pass to Mammoth or Whistler. If you got the K-wood & EPIC pass, I don't know what more you could ask for in life. You have Mt. Tallac for BC riding. Plenty of night life without the massive tourist drama you'd get at Whistler (which I hated). Raley's right in town, lots of board shops with OK pricing, etc. Chill locals, but watch out for anyone with a Yellow Sprint lanyard on their pass Honestly, you could do SLT for very little $ with some planning. Plus I'm always there and would love to ride with you after all the JP advice I've bothered you about! |

cheers dudes, it seems that top of the hit list is probably kirkwood then. No douchebags, cheap season pass, and a similar terrain to niseko (but with much more challenging on piste looking at the trail map). Id obviously go to canada but one of the main reasons im going to the states is because i owe my mates for coming to japan a couple of years ago so this is returning the favour so to speak. I cant really make them come all the way to canada after that, itd just be rude. Nope, instead i will make them fly all the way from miami/NC to the west coast instead and then claim i 'came to them' :P
I checked colorado but the prices were a bit heavy so ill probably skip that. One of my mates in japan has put spanners in the plan for this year anyway by threatening to come to the US the year after and urging me to delay it one more year, so we'll see how it goes :) |

yupyup, cheers man. The only big spanner (aside the huge one of my mate dithering on whether shes having a proper ride this year or if she just means she'll be hanging out for a week or so), seems to be the accommodation situation up there. It'll also be peak season, so yeah if that road closes then that could be fun trying to get my plane home :p
Maybe i should just base at heavenly and go with that epic pass then. Shame because kirkwood sounds well loved by the people that ride it for all the best reasons. But i guess if youre relying on buses to get around then thats one of the issues you face. Thanks for the advice, ill keep it all up in my head for the planning stage :) |

Another vote for Lake Tahoe, north side for me though (Squaw Valley)
casinos and great terrain, with great snow.... Also Colorado was great too.. Vail was pretty impressive, didn't like Beaver Creek all that much. Breck and Keystone were great.. both locations had cheap lodging... but the lift tickets were expensive. Also if you are planning on having a car in Colorado, look for the free parking lots.. the lots close to the resorts were expensive! ($20+) |

Tahoe is pretty awesome. There are plenty of mountains and the big names (big $) aren't the only places you can have a great time. You can get some amazing deals and amazing days at places like Mt. Rose, Diamond Peak and Homewood. Look into the Snowbomb Tahoe Card.

Brighton and snowbird utah no doubt about it. Pass deals are way cheap plus you get amazing snow and cool people. Its pretty cheap to stay in salt lake. My pass to snowbird costed 500 and my pass to brighton for night riding 220.
