Pretty Lights is NOT dubstep. Some of the songs have elements of dubstep, but in no way classified as dubstep. People like to classify any music with a little bass wobble as dubstep, it just simply is not. |

I don't have it on my computer, my friend burned a CD for me. It's his Essential Mix from Pete Tong's Radio BBC Essential Mix collection. Check out that website, and I think you can get track listings. Avicii had his Essential Mix in like December 2010.

Avicii is a boss, he's so good although he's more house. flux pavillion is also filthy. Pretty much any of the Ellie Goulding songs remixed are straight fire ie starry eyed (jakwob) and lights (bassnectar). Lastly Zeds Dead has some real original great mixes that definitely deserve a good listening to.

Anyone here ever get into producing any dubstep? I think it would be fun, just not sure I have the time to dedicate to learning how to do it. There's always that fantasy that you would make an awesome song and blow up. Skrillex said he just sat in his house and made some stuff and uploaded it and all of the sudden everyone thought he was awesome... That would be cool

The term "dubstep" has gotten pretty over-used at this point.
Dubstep is quite simply an evolution of UK Speed Garage (sometimes referred to as 2-step in the US). This was essentially slowed down DnB beats, with sped up house/deep house layered over it. Made for a nice sound at 10am on a saturday morning. Dubstep came along when people started putting darker influences on it (thanks to a rise in popularity of the harder/darker styles of tech-house via Villalobos, hawtin, etc). Think Skream from some years back. It's hard to take Skrillex and his like and really call it "dubstep" at this point though. Dubstep has always been predominately house oriented, but with a break/syncopated backdrop instead of a 4-onthefloor beat. the "skrillex style" dubstep is much more closely related to electro and drum and bass than dubstep. The beats are far more complex (pre-darkstep drum and bass), and the melodies and leads are far more electro in style. THere's really NOTHING about it that's dubstep. I mean, can you really say this : and this: are even remotely related? Kind of a stretch. On a side note - yes, that katy B track is Benga's "man on a mission" with lyrics over it. Also worth noting that black dude jumping around throughout the whole video - is Benga. |

Myke!!! Whee! :)
Good to have you in a music thread :) A few things to add. 1. Dubplates. 2. Grime. 3. Two step. Not necessarily in that order. All the UK dubstep guys either came up through 2 step/grime scene or were strongly influenced by it. 2 step was massive in the UK. And was well known as 2-step. It was the ayia napa scene of choice. Think of it like the smarter ibiza. And it came from producers like armand van helden moving away from dodgy trance and speed garage. Which i guess then adds another influence. Speed garage, the worlds worst music genre. Actually i kinda liked it at the time, it had some seriously fat bass lines which is probably where the link comes from (it was still four to the floor and very trance driven - but we are talking mid 90s here). Might as well throw this in to give the new kids an idea what speed garage was: Anyway, 2 step stripped the bass out, went back to the roots of garage (soul) and added the judder offbeat they nicked from drum n bass/dub scene and voila two step was born. - arguably the most famous two step track in existence. (on a point of order, i shtooking HATE 2-step, its saccharine shit and the people who listen to it are (or rather were) modern day patrick batemans). Which then got stripped down and the production started getting raw. The MCing moved away from the bullshit of rnb vocals for smoooooth uk garage lines to hiphop for its influence and this spawned the UK grime scene. These producers (basically wiley et al) released dubplates (which moved from being a term to desribe the original master press for vinyl, to a kind of strip backed releases without vocals). Basically grime got darker and further removed from its 2-step roots. Which i guess is where you start finding the turn away from the vocal and towards finding the nastiest dirtiest sound out there. And then came the wobble. Well, maybe not quite. Basically grime went towards pop thanks in part to the commercial success of dizzee and the underground sound kind of split. People like kode9 and the bug went to deep and heavy bass lines (dub and the dancehall scene) and creating a kind of soundtrack to the apocalypse (burial), (this is the scene youll find heavily championed by pitchfork magazine and its the one i like) whilst the other scene which id never even heard of until this year to be honest, was all cartoon drops and breaks. Its fun and wacky, club friendly, but i cant even conceive of it as something with substance. This is the international sound of dubstep and makes up about 95% of the recommendatios on this thread (and probably rakes in about 95% of the money). Dont get me wrong, its fun. But its not a million miles away from trance to me, only with a big daft bass drop. Ill tell you what though, if you want to hear a sound that encapsulates a nice mix of the two, then i reckon diary of an afro warrior (which im actually listening to right now), by benga really is a great mix. Heavy roots influenced but lots of deep wobble. Anyway, heres some grime because the scene doesnt get enough credit for dubstep :) (shitty quality, cant find a decent version) Anyways, that should do. Wiley needs more credit (or rather money) than he gets for ripping garage up and helping the UK music scene evolve. Without him thered be no roll deep and without roll deep you arguably wouldnt have had that locus for producers and mc's to start developing those sounds. Anyway, as a reward for reading all this guff, heres the greatest song of the last 100 years :) |

IP - it's funny how you mention the split between the underground stuff and the more pop stuff, and also mention guys like Benga. He's in this weird place where he's responsible for a lot of the "underground" sound, but is also a driving force in the commercial sound. Same thing with Skream. You go back a bunch of years, and skream was on the forefront of developing the sound, and now he teams up with Benga and what's his face to form Magnetic Man (possibly the most commercial 'dubstep' venture to date).
Although, I don't care what anybody says - perfect stranger is an amazing track. Elements of Trance, Dubstep, even an early 90s throwback drum and bass break. And the lyrics just raise the hair on the back of your neck. Video is meh though. |

and those house music songs are good but they sound before my time. like club music from my dads generation. they are good though kinda reminds me of jungle. and you guys who are just getting started in here: myke and ippolite first of all : WELCOME! ![]() second start psting more underground like benga and that other stuff you posted. I wanna hear it. Im sure luv2shred does too! EDIT: @myke also why isnt that skrillex track dubstep? I understand before 1:35 but after the bass drops sounds like dub to me. can you really tell the difference of a couple of beats per measure or if its two step or whatever that means? I like this track: but maybe this isnt dub either? whats the diff between this and that skrillex song? @ippolite also can foreign beggars contact be considered grime?

haha, dude, ive been posting in here and bitching about the same stuff since page 1: http://www.trusnow.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=46799&PID=1021086#1021086
As for foreign beggars, nah, they have shit flow. Its standard UK hiphop. And thats not a good thing :) They also are way removed from what made grime grime. Namely a home bedroom industry giving it that raw street sound and some really juddery syncopated rhythms supplying an angry kind of paranoia. I went and listened to a few of their tracks and theyre kinda generic. Noisia almost saves them, but hes fighting a losing battle with those dudes... actually i listened to it again. Its a fun track, lots of energy, but nah, it aint grime. I dont think theyd want to be associated with that scene anyway. I think theyd rather be at the front of their own scene :) That noisia knows how to control his sounds though. Id also kinda argue that grime is dead as a productive driving force. all its big talents haveborrowed heavily from trance and big production to get some mainstream success (well earned by the way). Itd be pretty hard to be a grime crew these days without being something of a pastiche or an anachronism, so grime as it was is probably over. :) Anyways, changing the subject, heres a tune that i think Mykes gonna like courtesy of pitchfork: Actually, if you do want to keep up to date on whats happening in the UK: |

Dubstep isnt really dub. You really dont want to mix up the two terms because confusion really will set in :) also, the roots flavour of dubstep is another scene entirely. Its kind of underground (to be debated) british dubstep.
The term 'dubstep' i think is really 1 term being used for what feel like two different genres (though as myke pointed out benga and early skream really bridge that gap possibly in much the same way acidhouse bridges the gap between house and techno :p) Go check out and compare the stuff on hyperdub for example (kode9s label) with the stuff on this thread. Both are classified as 'dubstep', but theyre oceans apart. :) Some examples of the stuff on hyperdub maybe to explain a few of my weirder comments: |
