Hi all,
I'm travelling to Whistler at the end of the year (Dec 16-Dec 28) I've decided on my accommodation already in the heart of Whistler but I am still yet to decide on how to get there by bus. I am definitely planning to go via bus the day I arrive at the airport. Airport -> Whistler Whistler -> Vancouver City (Downtown) Vancouver City -> Airport. Does anyone know any good buses that take this route? Also, are there lots of grocery shops in the village for grocery shopping? What are some of your recommendations for staying in Whistler and places to visit in Downtown Vancouver? Super excited !!!! :D Cheers |

I don't know the bus routes up there. I've only used private shuttle buses that run from the airport to Whistler. I don't recall any specific company. A quick internet search should turn up plenty. I'd start HERE.
You really can't miss with just about any accommodations near the village. I've never looked into staying at Creekside, which is further, but supposedly less expensive. Whistler village has one or two grocery stores. They're not the cheapest stores in the world, but there aren't many other options for buying unprepared food stuffs. For Vancouver, most things to see are near town; Robson St, the park, etc... You could take an excursion to Victoria if time permits. Don't waste your time going to Chinatown as there's not much there for non-locals (found that out the hard way). Again, internet search is your friend. |

Prices seem to vary on the bus fares. I found one for about ~$120 return which doesn't seem too bad. Hmm since we are going for 12 days, we do plan to eat at home most days :) I'll look in to buying some groceries before I go. I'm going to be in Vancouver city for 3 nights so I'm trying to make the most out of it. Thanks for your tips :) |

I'm also going in December! I don't have any solid plans yet, but I have friends that live in Vancouver that I'll be staying with.

I went this year,
we used greyhound busses to get from the airport to whistler. was really good including a minibus from the middle of the village where the big bus dropped us off to the door of our accommodation. I was sick from food poisoning at the time so i really didn't enjoy the journey. but there appeared to be some magnificent scenery to be seen as you twist through the mountains. As for grocery shopping, there's a small shopping center in whistler village and an IGA nearer to creek side.. i don't remember them being that expensive although they probably aren't super cheap either |

Sounds like so much fun... I've booked my accomodation at the hilton - got 3 nights for free for staying 7 and the prices seems to be okay for 2 people ($1970 per person including lift passes for 12 days!) |

I was looking at making a trip up to Whistler mid-January. For those that have gone, are you going through Whistler's package deals or piecing it together from other sources? I've only looked on Whistlers site so far.

I've taken the Pacific Coach bus from Vancouver Airport to Whistler a number of times (upwards of 10). It is absolutely reliable, the team really look after you and it is reasonably priced. They run pretty frequently as well.
Also, they don't get hung up if you turn up to catch an early bus. If there is room, they put you on it. http://www.pacificcoach.com/ |

Whistler can be expensive for pretty much everything, things such as eating out, I'd try cutting down on expenses for sure, especially accommodations, most of the time will be spent on the mountain; although hot tub after a long day of skiing is nice

Hey man, I'm living in whistler atm and absolutely loving it. We have 3 grocery shops around the village and one near creekside. I think you can get a bus called pacific something from the airport direct to whistler or the greyhound from downtown Vancouver. If you have any more q's let me know!

we have had little to no snow the last 2 weeks :( our base is still sitting about 130-140 - snowmakers are doing a great job, but there hasn't been huge amounts of people so they can manage alright at the moment, over the christmas period it might get a little icy unless the weather is kind to us..
Snow wise, whatever we have had has literally been dust over crust and it gets tracked out real quick. we've got like 10cm coming today to thursday but the christmas forecast is looking kinda bleak at the moment. there doesnt look like theres anything huge expected but wait to see how it turns out until you cancel heli skiing. 2 weeks is a long way off to forecast because we all know how fickle the weather can be! |

Just came back from Whistler 2 days ago. Hasn't been the best of conditions lately but still ok if you don't mind the groomers. Whatever happened to "la nina"? Thought there was supposed to be crazy amounts of snow this year. Hope it gets dumped on when you're there.

yeah i was thinking about the same thing re: la nina. i keep telling myself it is only mid december though. I have a mate working at val d'isere ski resort in france, he sent me a picture last week and there is literally no snow, so i guess we've got to take what we get. Im sure the snow will start falling - we had 10cm last night, but i was too sick today to go out and ride… :(

It's supposed to be snowing again these next few days, but not as much as a few weeks ago, when they got dumped. But it's something...~15-20 cm overall in the next 4 days.
For anyone looking at going to Whistler, here are some links.
Getting to Whistler:
Grocery stores:
Accomodations:
I personally advise people who want to go to Whister/Blackcomb, that if you want to party and ride, go in April, when the Telus Ski and Snowboard Festival is on.
I've been the past 5 years and it comes out cheaper than if I went in Dec-Feb.
Plus you could have days when its okay to ride without a jacket.

I've never been to Whistler in April but I would imagine there wouldn't be much snow left by that time. But if it's closer to the end of season, things usually get cheaper so I might have to give it a try. Will they still have snow at the base by then? or is it best to just stay above midstation?

Not sure what you mean?
And as what was said, there is tons of snow in April, otherwise, they wouldn't hold one of the largest Snow Festivals in the world during this time, if there was no snow.....

I just reread WPIASS's response, and
Angry, I would suggest start looking for hotel deals in Jan-Feb for an April trip.
Some of the deals I've gotten was anywhere from $59 to $79 per day for a Studio with kitchen for that time period (I buy groceries to save on $$). Flights should definitely be cheaper as well.
FYI, If you do decide to go during the Ski & Snowboard Festival, its April 13-22.
Try to have the last weekend for the festival, some of the parties are better then, as well as the last Sat & Sun are demo days at Whistler Mountain, by Roundhouse lodge.
You get to try as many boards as you can.

^^^ mammoth! it's got everything you could want in a mountain, although I would rate Whistler's terrain a notch above mammoth's and the snow conditions a notch below. at least when i was there in january 2 years ago (the olympic year), the weather was so variable it made conditions crap. whistler/blackcomb sits at relatively low elevation so you can get rain instead of snow earlier in the year.
i might be heading up there for mlk mid jan though. we flew into seattle and did the drive up into whistler
