I've been riding for 8+ yrs now and last year I took a bus load of mates down for a 3 day weekend and was astonished to see how many of them weren't going to wear wrist guards!!
Seriously to all you beginner boarders, or anyone trying anything new, grab a pair of wrist guards (either buy or rent them, both options are cheaps as!) So whether your learning to board or learning new tricks or trying a rail or box for the first time... DON'T FORGET YOUR WRIST GUARDS!!! Broken wrists are the quickest ways to lose your confidence boarding! |

I do agree with this precaution despite the fact that I never followed it myself. One could also practice proper falling technique to avoid such injuries. Although, if you haven't "fallen" in a while, you may forget the proper technique and naturally stick your hands out... happens to the best of us.

I never wore wrist guards when i learnt but i can see that it would be a good idea. When learning you probably spend more time on you but than you do riding and when using your hands to break your fall it could easily cause a bad injury which could put you out for the rest of the season. You wouldn't want that

I wore wrist guards the first few years and they definitely helped prevent wrist injuries from falling all the time on the hard ice at Mountain High. They were pretty worn out when I let a newbie borrow it and he totally destroyed it. If not for the wrist guard, his wrist would have been that one that broke. I don't use one any more because the Tahoe snow is softer and I'm much better at staying on my foot. But I would highly recommend it for beginners. Especially 1st timers.

What do you guys who have used wrist guards bfeore, recommed as far as which guard to go with? I've never used them, but seriously considering it since I'm getting into park a lot more. Going to try and step up my game on small rails and more boxes this upcoming season. I can ride boxes, but I want to start focusing on more tricks while on them. Either way, I know I'm going to be taking quite a few spills while getting used to bs and fs board slides but I definitely don't want to hurt/ break my wrists. Which guards do you guys recommend?

To be honest, I never wear wrist guards. i generally recommend them to people that are just beginning because they pretty much fall all the time. I generally fall on my elbows if i do fall, but may consider it since i'm transitioning to the park. But gloves and wrist guards together, i heard, end up getting that bad odor. Any truth to that?

Yeah wrist guards are a great idea. My gf was learning, first day, first hour had a private lesson and broke her wrist. We were there for 9 days! We wish someone recommended them! I didn't think to!

Ausved similar thing happened to me, went down with a bunch of mates for 4 days and one mate broke his wrist on the first day, already paid for accomodation and lift passes and he spent the next 3.5 days sitting at a bar at the bottom of the slopes, and that was the only time he could make it down to the snow that year... (thankfully Perisher give you a credit for any unused lift passes to be used within a year)

It doesnt take much to break your wrist. If i hadnt been wearing my wrist guards this last season, i would have broken my wrist just coming of the side of a box a little early. I have had students damage their wrists by falls just a few feet. Imagine your wrist twisting at high speeds or getting trapped underneath your body on a messed up spin. However, knowing proper falling technique is important because your shoulders can take serious damage too

Sorry for reviving this, but I'd like to know too. Can we try to get a list together of brands that offer gloves or MITTS with wrist guards in them as well as individual wrist guards? what about places that sell them? i don't remember seeing any on TruSnow but then again i wasn't checking that closely either. |

Most are around 10 bucks a pair, anything is better than nothing, just go with a more well known brand.

i'm a little peeved because my gloves fit pretty tight so i think i'll have to get different ones. i'm pretty sure the ones i have now don't have room for wrist guards underneath.
level gloves are soooooo expensive in europe. so can't get those. i'll just have to look around. |

I love my wrist guards. It is kind of a pain fitting my gloves around them sometimes, but I have had a couple spills where I felt they help take some impact.

I have a pair of Level "Fly" gloves with the articulating wrist guard built in. I hardly wear them unless conditions are very icy.... but they're warm, comfortable and definitely absorb impact to the wrist.
This is one piece of protective gear that beginners and anyone stepping out of their "box" should wear. Wrist injuries take forever to heal. Here's a link to the Level glove that i have. http://www.levelgloves.com/protection.php?recordID=flynavyanthracite.gif |

Wrist guards are good for protection but if you rely on them, then you learn bad habits for falling... Never worn them and never will but I have a friend who swears by hers.

Shift4200, I was looking at the Level Superpipe Pro gloves. A bit steep at $150.00 but they look pretty legit and look like they offer a ton of protection.

unless you're just hellbent on getting the superpros, prolly b/c of the leather, the half pipes are just as good and are also gore-tex. but I wear the flys, and while not gore-tex, Ive not really ever had problems with getting wet.... and they're cheaper than the super pros and half pipes.... |

I still wear wrist guards. I'd rather be safe than sorry. The more protection I wear, the faster I'll learn due to the extra risk I'll take when trying new things.

+1 to this.... I'm no pro, so the added benefits of the Superpipe glove over the Fly was really no benefit to me. Add that to the fact that I found a pair of previous season Fly's for less than $30 it was a no brainier. I too have had no problems with my Fly's taking on water.... my only complaint is they can be a bit hot on milder days. |

Dakine nova wristguard glove.. one of the best things I've ever bought to protect myself on the mountain. These babies have the plsatic wrist guards inside the glove so it fits VERY well. I have no problem lacing and have nearly unrestrained movement while using the glove.
I would say wrist guards in general are the absolute most important thing for a beginning snowboarder, and are still fairly important for the intermediate.. Even though we all know to fall on our forearms instead of wrists and what not, it doesn't hurt to have the extra protection. Anyways, here's the link if you want to check em out - Here P.S. I am in dentistry school so you can imagine the kind of precautions I go to to protect my hands :P |

I also have the Dakine Wrist Guards, they are very comfortable and designed to fit inside your glove.
I would suggest purchasing your gloves and guards together to ensure best fit. http://www.amazon.com/Dakine-1500-800-10-Wrist-Guards/dp/B003QTF42Q |

That's what I've done in the past, just have a helmet, tuck and roll. I might look in to wrist guard gloves again this winter if there's any I like better than what I've seen in the past...

The money spent on gloves, is nothing compared to the doctor's bill you may have after not being protected.

quit being cheap ppl and protect yoself. You can always find decent wrist guards for under $20. I think with shipping my r.e.d.s were like 18 (usd). They paid themselves of the first time they saved me from damage.
I wear rollerblading ones when I skate (i look like a tool), yesterday those things did their job. I know if not wearing guards I wouldn't have been able to do anything with my left arm for weeks. Lost work money and spent doctor money. Pony up and get some guards. Even though you're not supposed to catch yourself with your arms you know you will sometime.

I couldn't find a definite size chart online either. If you don't have a snowboard or skate shop near you, you can always go to Target/K-Mart/Walmart or your local sporting goods store to try them on. They don't need to be snowboard specific. Wrist guards are wrist guards. Basically, it is the hard curved piece of plastic that's important. When I worked at a skate park years ago kids would come in with generic k-mart wrist guards and they would work just as good as the expensive name brand wrist guards. Just remember, they have to fit under your snowboard gloves. They even make gloves with built in wrist guards. |

Thanks. I was going to buy it here at TS but I found a slightly cheaper Dakine wrist guards via Amazon with free returns, so I was inclined to get it from them since I can easily just return it if it didn't fit.
