So I got achilles tendonitis in both my legs from walking around too much in sandals about 2 months ago. Went to the doctor, and he basically told me to rest them, ice them, and soak them in hot water, and take advil 3 times a day.
But the healing process is taking freaking forever. It's definitely maybe 50% better than it was back then, but I'm gonna be snowboarding a bit in about 3 weeks. Anyone have any experience with this, and any idea on expected healing time? |

No idea but how did you know it was something to go to the doctors to check up on? I'm very curious.

Possibly try a new pair of shoes? Sometimes the arches in shoes can make a world of difference. I've heard good things about those custom fit tennis shoes.

after an injury DO NOT TAKE ANTI-INFLAMMATORY MEDS! if you must take pain killers go herbal! there are injuries that warrant drugs like that but they prevent the body from healing properly. when you start working them again do it with out drugs and STRETCH! I got tendinitis from a snowboard boot and corrected it quickly!within a week but it takes massage exerciser and stretching not pills!

That sucks! I hope it gets better. I have never had it happen to me but it sounds painful as hell.

Get some real shoes... or walk bare feet. As for recovering... time is the only medicine... if you have to exercise, go swimming in a pool. Stay off them, nothing high impact. If walking was the cause, it's also your posture that was affected.

yes, swimming is the best low/no impact exercise for recovery.

I screwed up my feet by wearing unsupportive flip flops around all summer. I ended up with planter fasciatious. Had to go to a foot doctor and get custom insoles for my feet as well as physical therapy to build the muscles in my feet back up to par. Injuries suck no matter what the injury is. Rest and ice it. Some stretching and a little rehab will hopefully get you healthy again.

Recovery time can vary for different people. Just have to take it one day at a time. Don't push it before it's completely healed and make it worse.

Tendonitis really sucks. I had patellar tendonitis last year and it took a couple of months to fix itself. Good luck and heal up!

sadly the doctor is right there really isnt much u can do for it. u could try taking a glucosomine supplement as well, its technically more for joints but it seems to help my old man. hes got it real bad in his elbows from yrs of lifting yet he still lifts 5 days a week or his shoulders would break down
suggestion look up some alternative medicine (eastern medicine) and see if they have any ideas. its sometimes surprising what alternative methods can do |

Get one of those little band/brace things that goes around your arm just below your elbow. Puts the tiniest bit of pressure on the muscle and makes a huge difference for tendonitis.

hmm with all due respect, I think he's probably better off with his physician's advice rather than an unsourced forum post. Not that they're omniscient or anything, but you know they do have a bit of schooling for this sort of thing. |

Tendon/ligament damage can take longer to heal then broken bones. Best advice is to think long term. If you push things too hard too fast chances are you will reinjure the soft tissue and be out even longer. If you do decide to push it, take all possible precautions and tape the crap out of your legs for added support. Above all else, listen to your body. A lot of pain is telling you something. Good luck.

Yeah thanks guys - good advice.
I actually heard from a lot of sources that I shouldn't be taking anti-inflammatory meds. I'm going to see a physical therapist this week, so we'll see what they have to say about it. |

Keep us posted please. My achilles has been aching and super tight for the last 3 weeks because of skateboarding too much. I'm guessing I hurt it when I was trying to haul ass to keep up with my son on his bike. I tend to take long strides when I'm pushing with my right leg in order to keep my speed up and it was sore right after skating a few miles around town so let me know what your physical therapist recommends. I'll try anything. I'm not at the point yet of having to go see a doctor, but if it continues to get worse, then that's my only hope.

Any kind of repeated impact will affect your joints in your leg... sore muscles are a sign of inactive use... it'll get better with time, tone down the intensity in the short term and your muscles will adjust.

Yeah definitely. I'll let you know right after my session on Thursday. From what I've been told by my doctor, if it is tendonitis (i.e. your achilles is just temporarily inflamed), the proper treatment is to rest it as much as possible, ice, elevate above heart level, and take anti-inflammatory meds.
Though... people seem to be against the anti-inflammatory meds for what I have. So try the other things for now? |

holy cow i did not know sandals could be so insidious!! hope it gets better soon. i guess this happens if you're not used to wearing a type of shoe, in this case sandals, because there are plenty of people who only wear sandals. that's some rotten luck!

woohoo123, mine have been doing the same thing. I'll get up and walk around and they will be super tight before they get warmed up. As long as I am walking around, they don't seem to be too bad. As soon as I sit down for a few minutes or longer, when I go to get up again, I'm back to square one with a super tight and sore achilles tendon. I try to rest it but my job requires me to be walking to an extent. It definitely sucks though.

Yeah bmorse, mine is exactly the same way.
SO. UPDATE! I went to physical therapy yesterday, and they told me that yes, ibuprofen has served its use - it was just to get rid of inflammation now. They said the most important thing is to keep off your foot, and if you have to walk, take as small steps as you need to, but make sure you try to walk normally, without limping. Limping makes it worse, walking normally makes it better. So DONT LIMP. As for the whole PT routine, they warmed my feet up for ~5 minutes, then proceeded to massage the painful area with lotion to the point of slight discomfort for about 5 minutes. They ultrasounded it, to open the capillaries and bring blood to the area. Then, I did a few exercises - calf extensions with bands, then this exercise where you scrunch your toes while standing to help your arches. And then basic stretching against the wall, which I couldn't really do. Then a 10 minute icing session. But yeah the PT helped a ton. I'll let you guys know how it goes in a few weeks, but he said it should heal up within a month. I won't be back to 100% in 2 weeks, but he said I can probably board a bit, just I have to listen to my legs if they start to hurt. |

the nice thing about injuries like this is that you get better at an exponential rate. i tore my MCL in 2010 snowboarding, and it felt like it took forever to start healing, but as it heals, it gets better faster. so like at the rate you've been going, it may not seem like you'll be good in a few weeks, but you'll feel tons better if you keep doing what the therapist says.

It's great to hear that you're healing up! Sounds like you got the green light to do some boarding, too. All in all, not too shabby. Things could have been a lot worse. Best of luck in your recovery dude!

Thanks guys. It's sick to have the support from you all. I've been going crazy sitting in my room all day, barely moving. TS & making snowboarding videos is all that keeps me sane now. Hahahaha I will endure anything to snowboard again.
