Has anybody tried to dye a white backpack a different color? Just wondering if the waterproof material would absorb the dye, or would it rub off on your clothes, or just make a messy looking backpack by not soaking into the material?

why don't you just buy a colored backpack...
it's not like they're expensive.

it would depend on the material. if its nylon, like most backpacks, it probably won't work well, it will just rub out.

Alka-- I already have the backpack, it was given to me. Just not crazy about boring white. But if dye is going to keep rubbing off, don't want to ruin the backpack and make it unusable.

considering its waterproof, l woulnd't say it would absorb it that great. maybe you should just slap some pins on it instead to personalize it and add more color

batmanwest--that's a great link. Did your friend use the one pictured to the side, the Jaquard acid dye?

not sure exactly what he used. I live in Ohio, he lives in Portland WA. I just know, and have seen things he has done with some sort of dye. Could ask if you really wanted...

Yeah, ask him. I dyed a pair of white bindings and it worked well, even being a solid material and I just used several packs of RIT dye for that, so thought it might work for backpack material.
ddomski--that's a good thought, a backpack should sell before school starts.

Yeah, those are the ones. I was surprised how well they took the dye, but didn't cover up the markings.

I think there are basically few options: new paint will flake, new paint will damage basic material, new paint will not stick to mateiral or everything would be fine.
So you may be lucky in 25% of cases))) So you can try) It all depends on the material you backbapck is made of, and a paint you want to use) |

That sounds like they should just go to the 'rant' thread. Everybody can find something to rant about.
