Hey guys, I am starting the early stages of planning a winter trip and wanted to get some advice on these east coast mountains. I'm from CT and usually go to Okemo/Stratton/Killington/ Mt Snow. I found some great deals for week trips to Sugarloaf and Sugarbush and wanted to get some input from people who have ridden there. All I have heard about the two is Sugarloaf gets extremely cold and windy since its in Maine, but after looking at the two sites Sugarloaf definitely looks like a great mountain.
Any input, or comments from riders who have been to one, or both would be appreciated. Thanks guy/gals |

I love Sugarloaf but wish it was closer to Boston so I could get their more frequently. For sure, it can get cold and windy at Sugarloaf. However, they have some great, steep terrain and the snowfields above tree line are unique in this area. They are also opening up some new tree skiing terrain, side country terrain. They and Jay Peak are usually the only eastern resorts still open thru Mid-April which is a testament to the snow they receive and can make due to the cold. I haven't been to Sugarbush, so I can't give you first hand knowledge.

I find the snow quality at Sugarloaf is better than sugar bush.... add to that the fact that loaf has better terrain and is the only east coast mountain with "above tree" lift accessible riding. Don't go expecting snow fields like Colorado or Utah, but the peak is def free of trees.
If you already ride at Okemo and Killy, Sugarbush is really only about 30 min north of K.... so save that for a day when you pull into K and it's a madhouse. Also, if I was planning a riding trip... I'd go somewhere that's a little to far to do in one day..... I say Sugarloaf all the way. |

Sugarbush is neat, and the lift that takes you from sugarbush north to sugarbush south is awesome (i forget the names of the areas). However, driving to sugarloaf, there is a turn called "oh my gosh turn". Going aroun this you see the mountain for the first time, and no picture does it justice. It is huge, The snowfields are so much fun in late winter. I just cannot say enough good things about the place. Its a hike, but well worth it.

False - Sugarbush is not 30 minutes from Killington. They are both great places. Personally, I'm a huge fan of Sugarbush for mid-week riding. Completely empty on non-holiday weeks and tons of BC/trees if you find someone to take you.

Mid-week, non-holiday riding is the best, no crowds on the trails or the lifts. I need to do more of that!

I've never been to Sugarbush, so I can't really say much for that. But Sugarloaf can get really cold and windy, but as long as you dress for it it's not bad at all. The trails are amazing so its worth it. I have also been on plenty of days when it was gorgeous weather. Only thing that I would warn you about is the long lines during holiday weekends... you can avoid them if you use some of the more out of the way lifts though.

Im hoping to plan a week trip to sugarloaf January 8-13th, midweek so I am hoping no long lines. I found a company that had great week trip deals for that week because I believe its a slow week for the mountains. I take you go you there alot? One thing that really interests me is their expansion project..

Sugarloaf is head and shoulders above Sugarbush....not nearly as many people, more terrain, and better quality terrain.
It's hard to beat Sugarloaf on the east coast. |

Sugarloaf it is! Sent in the deposits for the trip about 2 weeks ago. Figured if I am going somewhere for 5 days might as well go somewhere I wont go any other time-
Listen to this deal; Sun-Thurs lodging in Village Condos (trailside) and 5 day lift pass for.... wait for it.... $289 for the whole deal. Squeezing max occupancy in a room but not a big deal ( 4 ppl in a 1 bedroom, 6 in a 2 bedroom and 8 in a 3 bedroom) Pays of to be part of the Outdoor Club at school and take advantage of the mountains 'college week' |

That's one ridiculous deal.
Make sure you hit White Nitro over there...it's one of their iconic trails and is a blast if it's not too icy. |
