Can save a lot of money by buying a cheaper backpack that is still good, but just not branded as a "snowboard" backpack and therefore doesn't have the big ticket markups.

Well I just used my regular school backpack last season, it was ok but kinda want one with features / pockets ment for boarding ( waist strap / goggle pocket / etc).

If you're looking for a pack to hold your snowboard, Burton has some pretty cheap ones. Not sure how long they last but they have the vertical straps to carry one.
