What do you guys think for the east coast this year? Im thinkin lots of snow based on all this crazy weather this summer, hurricanes, earthquakes, record breaking rainfall. Im in NJ and school in PA hoping we get nailed with a couple early blizzards

Well, first off, we have this to look at and discuss.... http://www.accuweather.com/blogs/meteomadness/story/53551/snow-forecast-for-the-winter-of-20112012.asp and I would bet in a few weeks the guys over here.... http://www.famousinternetskiers.com/weather/ will have something to say.
I personally agree somewhat with the accuweather prediction. Based on current, and past trends for the east this summer, and spring, and even right now! all areas have been above average for precip. And even when you remove the totals that bitch Irene dumped, most places are still above average. I see this trend to continue. This, mixed with the current trend of being below average temp. wise, could spell some NICE things for the east this year. There are a lot of models that insist that the east will be bitter cold this year. While it kinda sucks to ride in those negative digits, it is a fair trade to keep Ra*n away, and replace it with snow. I have also heard that with this bitter cold air mass, it will keep the water saturation of the air down as well=less humid air=more quality pow, and not east coast crete. But...hey, this is just my prediction from looking at models and based off the little knowledge I have, along with predictions of others. Only time will tell. Here is to hoping for a stellar winter for us east coasters.... |

There have been a few fronts that brought some snow to the upper 13k+ peaks here in Colorado but it's thought the larger storms won't be here until early spring.

Yeah? Everything I have read, seen, and heard suggests otherwise. Hope that's not true, but really think it's just going to be a relatively average year for the PNW. |

West coast will put you to shame again. Chance of rain in Northern California already this Sunday. Bodes well for the season.

You can not realistically compare the west coast to the east. On any level. Two completely different environments. |

I don't know. After last year's massive dumping, I'm not expecting much for this season on the West Coast.

Batman, do you put much stock in the Farmer's Almanac? They call for avg. temps with above avg. precipitation in the NW. Read your sources which call for the opposite. Farmer's calls for lots of snow in the upper NE. |

^ No matter what you do you can never know what the weather will be like so far in advance. Hell the the weekly forecast on the news is wrong all the time. All you can do is hope, and wait and see if there will be good weather. Let it snow

Agree one hundred percent. But at the same time, you CAN read current patterns and trends, and get a feel for what the generalization of the winter will be. Mixed with the oh so famous current blocking over Greenland.....Anyways, there are too many factors to take in to long term weather forecasting....Most of which I don't even understand. My personal hunch is just based off the strong blocking over Greenland, mixed with current precip totals for the east. It has been a pretty stable pattern these past few months. As far as if I follow and trust the farmers almanac? I follow it because weather interests me, but I have never really trusted it's predictions. I feel year after year the FA is too vague, and more times out of ten, is relatively off target. In my years of following weather, and precip totals and all that good stuff, I have found that the FA has always been off. Which brings me to my next topic/insider guide. I know I plug them a lot on this site, but http://www.famousinternetskiers.com has always been right on with their predictions for the east coast. Countless times last winter their resident weather forecaster was right on with storm totals within a 1/2 inch...not bad if you ask me. They also give VERY detailed descriptions on not only quantity of snow in very specific areas of the NE, but descriptions of quality of snow in those areas. A very interesting site to follow during the winter if you are a NE rider. Just my .02 cents. |

I wouldn't take that map too much to heart. It is a decent run down of what hopes and visions are to come, but was also made over a month ago I think.... I believe the end of October is when more "maps" will start popping up, as it will get easier to predict what winter has in store for us. That being said, I really hope the map is right for this season. Really want some heavy snowfalls in central Ohio this year. I have big, big plans for some urban spots I have been scoping the past few months... |

The farmers almanac map looks horrible for me but the accuweather one completely contradicts that so who knows at this point guess were gonna have to wait another month for more info.

I hope not :( lol last year was so good. Where im at in school the monthly rainfall far exceeds the average along with philadelphia. Lock haven this month 14.1 inches- average 3.79 inches... Philadelphia 10.29- average 3.78
Lets hope that carries into the winter. |

14 inches of rain in one month is ALOTTT of snow depending on some variables of course but mostly ive seen 6.25-10 inches of snow per 1 inch of rain you do the math. Let it snow let it snow let it snow.

Belleayre is now tentatively opening Nov. 19. Hope it's cold enough next week for snowmaking. I'm kiteboarding tomorrow on the bay, we have a good windy forecast, but next weekend I'd like to do some snowboarding.........
