    Posted: Oct/16/2011 at 1:17pm
In today's Indy race at Las Vegas Raceway, there was a 15 cart crash.
Unfortuntately, Dan Wheldon, in his 77 cart, die in the crash.
The crash was by far one of the worst I've have seen. Looked like a movie.
Here's a vid...

R.I.P. Dan. You'll be miss.

The worst crash I've ever seen. I don't follow Indy Car much/at all, but I remember reading headlines of Dan Wheldon winning the Indy 500 twice, including this year.
RIP Dan.

He wasn't dead at the time, they flew him out of the stadium in the helicopter, but he "died from his injuries" soon after. Probably mostly trauma, but the fire couldn't have helped.

Following is a statement from INDYCAR CEO Randy Bernard:

"INDYCAR is sad to announce that Dan Wheldon passed away from unsurvivable injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dan and his family. INDYCAR, its drivers and teams have decided to end the race. We will run a five-lap salute in honor of Dan."

I'm just sayin'....

he was testing a much safer car too. INDY screwed up big time let too many cars in the vegas race and too many drivers that dont have any experience on oval race tracks.

I come from a motor sports background and I can say that 225mph averages around an oval in that little of sheet metal is almost negligence against INDYcar.  Over 30 cars starting on a track that fast?   That is like being surprised the dog bites you as you're pulling its tail.

It is very sad that Dan lost his life racing, but when you strap it up, everyone knows that is a possibility.  My thoughts are with his wife and young sons and hopefully Indycar gets its shit together after this terrible tragedy.

I hadn't even looked at f1/indy/whatever you call it for a while until this was being covered on ESPN yesterday.  Definitely sad, but in retrospect I like the guy's style, and the story about his personality I liked was when danica got all the hype at Indy and he had the T-shirt that said "I'm the driver that ACTUALLY WON THE RACE" or something like that.
IDK zakk, auto racing is definitely dangerous but seems like we lose a lot of pros (and recreationists) in the winter sport as well ... at least those drivers don't have MOther Nature in the mountains to deal with

I'm a big racing nut, and even went to the Toronto Molson Indy this summer. (Sat at turn 3, the highest crash concentration of the circuit). I've always been a very strong opposer to open cockpit oval racing for reasons I will go on to explain.

Insufficient protection of the driver means flipping over and striking the barrier will be fatal, which could have been what kill Dan Wheldon. Road debris is also very dangerous to the driver. (see: Felipe Massa helmet concussion) There is a serious absence of runoffs (sand and tyre traps) to protect drivers in the event that they lose control and run off the track. Look at every oval racing fatality to this day: how many could have been prevented if there was a sand runoff outside of the turn?

there is some quote out there that sums up to "Mountain climbing, racing cars and bull fighting are the only real sports.  the rest are games" and I'd put ski/snowboard in there as well as it's fairly interchangeable with climbing and sometimes one leading to the other (BC riding, see: J. Jones)

It's one thing to deal with mother nature, but when you're in a race car, there are so many variables and so much can go wrong.  It seldom does, but when it does, it tends to be really, really bad.

When anyone is lost due to sport, it is a tragedy.

That is an unreal crash.  It's always sad to lose someone racing but it is always so much worse when they leave behind a family, especially two young children.
