Just remembering the first time I got on a snowboard... It was about 7 yrs ago at Mt. Hood. It was the most blizzardy, icey, crazy day.  Think I was on my ass most of the day, and ice is definitely not fun to fall on.  By the end of the day I was pretty much bruised from head to toe. And the only time I made it down the mountain was with my cousin holding my hands. Guess it wasn't so bad though, cause I kept doing it. Smile

The first time was at Mt. High...tried it after skiing there for a couple years. Didn't even own snow pants or jackets or anything...went in jeans and sweatshirt. felt miserable, but still loved it...have come a long way...

a place that doesn't exsist anymore called Mt. Trashmore about 20 years ago.  Didn't know I needed snowboard boots, went in combat boots, did so bad I didn't try it again for 10 years (that time with the right boots) but when I did I was hooked.

Mt. Trashmore in Riverview?  Ha!  I was talking to a co-worker this afternoon about some MI ski hills, he googled defunct or failed MI ski resorts and Mt. Trashmore was one of them.  He (co-worker) learned to ski there.

Talk about coincidence...

first time i ever went boarding was at killington. Back then; to size you; the rental guy would ask; "small medium or large?"... when it was my turn i replied "small" and he goes "oh well, only large left, here you go".  i was 135lbs and they gave me a 162. didn't matter much since all i was doing was catching my backside edge and yard sale every 15 seconds.

First time on a board was up at Lolo.  Back country area SW of Missoula.  Just little pow fields that me and another clueless friend slip slided down.  Those were some sweet days.

First time at a real shred hill though?? Red Lodge a few months later, blew my shoulder out second run of the day.  I too don't know why I kept going after that.

I haven't thought of that for a while.

Reading these 1st-time stories is very interesting. Most, if not all, of us had a bad experience the first time..yet we went back and stuck with it. And for some reason, when my non-snowport friends say they hate being cold in the snow, I can't understand it. I guess we subconciously forget how horrible it was that first time...almost like mothers forget how painful it was to have babies and want more...

The very same.  My mom worked there so I lived there when I was a little kid.  It was a dump, but something to do considering next area was over an hour away.   The hill is now part of the golf course.   If snowboarding would have been as big as it's been for the last 10 years for the 10 before it closed I'm sure they'd still be open.

Hey congrats on the board win.  How many that make for you?  Wink

I learned at Mammoth 4 years ago.  Perfect conditions (1ft of pow the night before, slow beginner friendly lifts, uncrowded)...I was lucky, but a lady lost control and ran right into my back.

Still love it though...can't wait for the season to start.

Point whores should not win boards. LOL

Anyways, I learned at a crappy Ohio place called Mad River "Mountain". It went okay. I couldn't understand the concept of heel edge turning for the first year though.

Although, I guess you could say the first place I "learned" was riding a sled like a snowboard at age 11 at our local spot for sledding. I OWNED that sled and hill. Slashed it like a boss. Then I progressed to making my own board out of an old skate deck, and "boarding" on my house roof.

The first time I attempted to snowboard was at Swain "Resort" in western NY.  Despite the whopping 600ft of vert, I barely managed to struggle down the hill twice.  Hurt so bad I didn't attempt to go again for another 7 years when I move out west (to AZ of all places).  On attempt #2 I got a concussion.  Must have knocked the sense out of me because I was determined to try yet again.

i tackled down a 200ish pounds man on the bunny slope, then tackled his wife later the day. and picked up a little girl that i ran into (literally pick her up because my board went between her skis). it was a good time for sure.
hmmm... Now What???

First time I ever snowboarded...
I signed up for 5 boarding lessons with my roommate (turned boyfriend, turned husband) through the local community college.  We ended up buying all of our gear and couldn't wait to go up for the first time.
So we took our gear, bought a lift ticket to Mt. Hood Meadows, and gave it a go.  I remember it being quite awful.  We ended up on the next lift harder than the bunny lift.  There was a 90 degree left turn in the run we were doing, and neither of us could turn left.  We ended up having to fall, turtle roll ourselves around the corner, get back up and finish the run. I go down that run every now and again, just to laugh at myself and my inability to make that stupid left turn.
The second time we went up, I remember asking the people at the ski school desk at Timberline if they'd cancel the lessons due to snow.  Oh god, I was the noobiest noob around.
That was 12 years ago now, with a husband and now kids learning to ski this year.  It has been a great time boarding!

I went to Round Top or something like that once for night skiing back in spring of '05.  Then I moved out to CA and got a pass to Tahoe.  Got hurt, took a year off, but have been at it ever since.

The Canyons once

Then I took a class through college and we went to Powder Mountain.  They were seperating people and I made 3 perfect turns and they were like "Ok your with the expert group".  I was like sweet.  Day 1 was learn to ride backwards, day 2 was ride ride rails, day three was hit jumps.  And then it started to snow like 3' every time I want so we just went and rode Pow.  It was sick.

Yeah, I'm pretty upset I didn't start sooner too.  After that first time I didn't board again for three years, mostly cause it's so pricey, but now I'm addicted too. Go pretty much every week if I can.

Heavenly Valley, South Lake Tahoe, CA/NV. I enjoyed it until my worn out rental board's binding snapped and ended my day.  Got a free ride on a snowmobile train at least.  Too many flat stretches at Heavenly however, so I wouldn't recommend anyone go there for their first time.

My ex left me three yrs ago and I decided what the heck, I love snow bunnies (JK!)  Took my 14 y/o son to a place called Wolf Ridge Resort in NC.  There were no instructors and I told him the only way we're gonna learn is to go up.  First run kept my balance and was hauling ass for 200 yds before I realized I didn't know how to stop.  Lean bacl like I did on a skateboard 30 yrs ago and when the nose came back down I was thrown 40 yds down the hill.  My ribs landed on my elbow and I couldn't breath the rest of the day...not so bad but when you live in Hilton Head and the avg temps are 90* it makes it difficult in the mtns.  I made like 25 runs that day and had the time of my life.

Year 3 should go much better.

In the 8th grade my uncle took me to learn how to snowboard. We went to Blue Mountain in eastern PA. I made it a total on 50 yds, falling the whole way through, when I fell backwards and broke my wrist and got a minor concussion. My head hurt the most, but because the nurses union was on strike, I couldn't get my wrist looked at for 3-4 days. It sat in a first-aid splint and ended up becoming way more than just the initial fracture. I was in a full arm cast for well over three months and a wrist cast for another month after that. Easy to say, I've come a long way since then, haha.
