Im from ottawa canada and want to take a tour trip of some hills in vermont...
Can someone from the area tell me what the best 3 hills in a relative area would be...?? Id like to go down and travel to a few of the best hills if there close enough... Any ideas... Thanks Damian-------------------------------------------------------------- "lets go snow" |

jay peak, killington, okemo. my top 3. jay peak is pretty far north and very close to canada. killington and okemo are in the same area and you can try both in the same trip.

Smugglers Notch is pretty serious business.... Killington is my favorite, and home mountain. Stowe is worth seeing, as well as Sugarbush and Jay peak.

I love Killington/Pico. They are great mountains with tons of amenities and great restaurants in the area. They're sister mountains and I believe your board pass if good for both mountains if you purchase at killington. A great place to stay for cheap nearby there is at Turn of the River Lodge. They have mad cheap rates, clean rooms/bathrooms and a great common area with a fireplace - i would call it a true old fashioned ski lodge. (They have bunks for sharing and private rooms with private or shared baths - different pricing for each) I love Stowe and Stratton too. Stowe is further north and has a lot less visitors from NY and New Jersey which makes for a better community feel. I always have a great time and love the people and conditions. I wouldn't recommend Jay peak - they often close their tram due to weather and it can become super boring riding the basic trails you can access after that.

what would u do??? after a couple days of riding hard at killington...whats a place close to that... thats more laid back but still a great hill..?? and does the killington area have any areas to party? |

Like moonshadow said, Pico is super chill and right next to Killington. Pico doesn't open until mid-late December. Bromley is also a small, but fun place. Maybe 45 min from Killington.

A lot of people are mentioning Killington, Okemo, and Pico, but they're all in the southern part of the state. That would be great if you were coming up from NYC or somewhere south of VT, but I don't see any reason to drive a couple hours past Jay, Stowe, Smuggs and Sugarbush to go to smaller mountains that get less snow.
If your goal is to ride hard for a couple days, then party and chill a bit more for a couple days, I would go to Jay and Smuggs to start. You could go to Jay first then drive down a little bit further to Smuggs. They both get great snow and have a lot of good terrain, but not much nightlife. The next day, you could continue down to Stowe and stay in that area, because that's where the nightlife is going to be. You could then ride at Stowe and/ or go down to Sugarbush. I used to live in Burlington, and that would be a good place to go for nightlife as well. In fact, it's much better than you are going to find at any resort in the sate. You could stay in Burlington, hit up the late night action there, and you'd be 40-50 minutes from Smuggs, Stowe, and Sugarbush. I'm not saying Killington, Okemo, and Pico aren't nice mountains, but I would personally put Jay, Smuggs, Stowe, and Sugarbush ahead of all of them, so driving past my favorite 4 mountains in the state to go someplace lesser doesn't make much sense to me. I definitely disagree with not recommending Jay. Even if the Tram is closed, it really doesn't access much more terrain than the lifts do. In fact, when I go, I usually don't take the tram because the wait isn't worth the 150' of vert or whatever it is you gain over the lifts. With the exception of the face chutes and Valhalla, every single good glade is accessible from the lifts, so you don't really need the tram.

Don't lump all of new jersey in with those animals up north by NYC! But yeah, totally worth the extra drive to get to jay, bush, etc. Burke is a hidden gem as well.

A good day at Jay is better than any of the other VT mountains. I have to agree with a bunch of the others in that getting further north is great for getting away from the NY/NJ folks. Also, midweek at Okemo is like a paved race course....stump jumper is just plain fun when nobody is around.

If you did choose Killington, I would recommend some great bars to enjoy with your friends in the evening, like the Pickle and the Wobly Barn.
