It is a huge pipe with a lot of great rider riding it. It scary me 22 feet is high, the speed you need to get up and out of it doesn't take much to hurt yourself. I hope she get better soon.

Terrible. I'm sure she was wearing a helmet if she was competing, or practicing. It's so strange how people can be so dramatically injured in such a seemingly harmless fall. Natasha Richardson comes to mind, a minor fall on a bunny slope during a lesson and she ended up dying. Hope Sarah pulls through okay.

The following was released by Sarah’s publicist Nicole Wool, with the consent of Burke’s family and the medical staff at the University of Utah Hospital where she is being treated: Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke remains in critical condition at the University of Utah Hospital after sustaining serious injuries during a training run at Park City Mountain Resort on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Burke underwent a successful operation to repair a tear to her vertebral artery, which resulted in an intracranial hemorrhage at the time of her fall. William T. Couldwell, M.D. Ph.D., professor and chair of Neurosurgery at University of Utah performed the operation to repair the artery. “With injuries of this type, we need to observe the course of her brain function before making definitive pronouncements about Sarah’s prognosis for recovery,” said Couldwell. “Our Neuro Critical Care team will be monitoring her condition and response continuously over the coming hours and days.” Sarah’s family is grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of support from around the globe. Fans may continue to use Sarah's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/pages/Sarah-Burke/50553451173 to express their wishes and receive updates. The family also requests media and the public respect their privacy in order to give them time with Sarah at this critical stage. |

Hoping for a fast recovery for her and vibes to her and her family.
I don't think the pipe is cursed because if you think about it, Park City is a place where a lot of top athletes train so if any of them gets injured you'll hear it on the news whereas for another resort it prob won't make it onto the news if one rider injures themselves in the pipe. Also these athletes are trying bigger and more dangerous tricks in the pipe. |

This is so sad. How many people have to die or get seriously injured before we take a step back and make some corrections to what we have been doing? I hope this at least inspires everyone to wear helmets and be a little more careful up riding. Life is a fragile thing.
I have ridden that pipe for a few years now and the 22' walls are nothing less than fierce. If it is cursed, I'm definitely going to steer clear for a while... |

May she RIP and hope she has a good view of the sport she worked so hard to get recognized in the Olympics. @xrmitchell - she was wearing a helmet. This was a fluke thing Not saying people shouldn't be wearing them... Just saying that snow sports are an inherintly risky, a helmet will help, but it won't save you from these types of falls.

I know she was wearing a helmet. I'm just trying to advocate wearing it to those who still aren't convinced there is a risk, no matter how good you are.
RIP Sarah.

Here is the staement from her publicist.
"As the result of Sarah's fall, she suffered a ruptured vertebral artery, one of the four major arteries supplying blood to the brain,” Wool wrote. “The rupture of this artery led to a severe intracranial hemorrhage, which caused Sarah to go into cardiac arrest on the scene. Emergency personnel responded and CPR was administered on the scene during which time she remained without a pulse or spontaneous breathing. Studies in the University of Utah Hospital Emergency Department indicated that she retained brainstem function. She was placed on life support and a protocol of therapeutic hypothermia was initiated to protect her brain. An angiogram indicated the site of arterial bleeding, and on Wednesday, January 11, the injured artery was successfully repaired." “After the operation,” the statement continued, “numerous neurological examinations, electrodiagnostic tests and imaging studies revealed that Sarah sustained severe irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest, resulting in hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. Sarah passed away peacefully surrounded by those she loved. In accordance with Sarah's wishes, her organs and tissues were donated to save the lives of others." A news conference scheduled for Monday in which hospital doctors and Burke's family members were scheduled to talk with the media had been abruptly cancelled early Monday morning, and Wool was in tears when she met with on-site media to inform them of the change in schedule. Burke was a multiple gold medalist at the X Games, but had campaigned vigorously to have the women's skiing halfpipe included in the Olympics. Her dreams were fulfilled when the event was to debut in the 2014 Sochi, Russia Games. |

Very tragic -- will always be remembered for what she did to promote the sport for women & all skiers alike. Will also always be remembered for the gifts of life she provided to others through her choice to organ donate. May her family find strength and peace.
