I am heading to New England next week and I was wondering what you guys think about Smuggler's notch.
Looks great on paper by keeping all the green runs in 1 mountain. But what the rest of the mountain like? How fast are their lifts? Sitting for 20 minutes on a frigid lift is not my idea of fun. |

It is literally like 6 miles north of Stowe in northern VT I did some research and found that ALL their lifts are double chairs which i am sure are not express lifts. not looking forward to going up 2k vertical on a double chair. Probably will end up at stowe or Jay peak. |

I went to Smugglers Notch this past March. The mountain was very good. What caught me off-guard was the "cult like" following the place has. I hated the slow double chairs. I would consider the crowd on the weekend I was there to be normal to slightly above average crowd for the weekend. It took me 45 minutes per run. What kills you is the time you spend waiting for a chair. Its two at a time, nice and slow. What's surprising is that's exactly how the locals like it. They claim it keeps the big crowds away (the crowd was still pretty big there) and keeps the slopes uncrowded. However, I would strongly dispute that philosophy What they don't tell you is that you're not going to get in that many runs on a crowded day. Also, I found the accommodations to be dated, and the efficiencies are tiny for 2 people. The locals will tell you is that if you want fast lifts and fancy accommodations to go to Stowe. The mountain has a great laid back vibe, and the skiing is very good. There is something there for everyone. Its well known for being a family resort. The have some really cool apres ski activities. My opinion is if they would ever decide to put in high speed lifts, it would be a top five resort in the east. I traveled there from PA. I had never been there before until this year. I would definitely go back, but not until they get high speed lifts and newer accommodations.

I don't think that place will ever get new lifts. They embrace the "two at a time nice and slow mentality". They will tell you they like the slow lifts b/c it doesn't keep dumping a ton of people on the slopes like high speeds do, thus keeping the slopes uncrowded. But they don't mention that you are going to wait in the lift line at least a half hour on a busy weekend. I was only doing one run in a little under an hour on Madonna or Sterling. 30 min. in the line, 12 min. lift ride, and 5 min. down the hill. My other complaints are they should pave their access road inside their village. And the only lodging option they give you for 2 people is an efficiency unit that is very small. Other than that they offer a great mountain for all abilities. Their are some really good choices for restaurants inside the village and also just outside the main entrance. The prices are more reasonable than a Stowe or Killington. The place also has a great family vibe.
