Can't believe the A's signed Cespeda to a big deal, 4yrs/$36mil for a team that's almost allergic to spending money. Now to see if he actually produces.

Damn, that's big news, I didn't know Oakland was in the running for him.  I read about Miami, Detroit, Chicago and a few other teams pursuing him but never Oakland.  I guess it's similar to how Detroit signed Prince fielder just a day or two after the Tiger's GM said they were not pursuing Fielder.

Yeah, with all the stuff that went on this offseason, I still think this might be the most unlikely move.  Especially considering them dumped Gio and Cahill.  And they lost Bailey too.  Beane keeps you guessing.

Rumor has it Cespeda is a huge Brad Pitt fan.  He doesn't understand that Pitt isn't actually the A's GM.  It's confusing.

Now that's funny, one of your better moments, grape.

The A's signing the Cuban centipede is a break from their usual thrifty ways.  Leaves me wondering how this team is going to perform this upcoming season, especially after losing 3 key pitchers.  So they don't want to spend the cash to keep someone like Gio but then they go after and sign Cespedes, outbidding several other teams?  Strange.

I think they know they won't be competitive until the stadium situation is resolved (and their possible move to San Jose).  With the Rangers and the Angels becoming such heavy hitters, maybe they just assume they will eat Cespeda's development years.

Yea but who knows how old he is already, they say he's 26 but that's gotta be 30+ in Cuban import years. By the time he's done developing maybe he'll be 40. It's definitely a strange move, the A's usually try to get by on some pitching and cheap prospect bats. Now they let pitchers go and sign a big FA bat, weird.

The rays just extended joe maddons contract by 3 years. He should defininetly get a bigger extentsion then that in my opinion he took them to the playoffs 3 times in the past 4 seasons.

Lighting, the phillies lost to the cardinals the same team that went through everyone in the playoffs they just happened to see them first round, if it was an extended 7 game series, instead of a 5 game series, there is not doubt in my mind the phillies would have won the that series and possibly the world series, with you cant face an Ace every night in a 7 game series and win the series. But we will just have to wait and see how the phillies do this year.

Why did the A's sign this Cuban dude after they gave away their pitching staff?

Don't understand the master plan here...

excuses excuses.  there are no guarantees in sports.  cardinals were hot though at the end of the season and rode that momentum all the way.

The A's tend to spend tons of money on players that most of the time aren't even worth it, or at least not when they were signed

Strange how that payroll list looks like how the standings are expected to look at the end of next season (except for where the Cubs are).

Baseball's player's union is way too strong.  One of the strongest in all of sports.  If they wouldn't budge on something like the DH, there is no way there will ever be a salary cap, unless there is a catastrophic strike/lockout.  Oh wait, there was one in 1994, and they still don't have a salary cap.

Who do the Cubs spend all of their money on?  I'm sure Soriano makes a pile of money, but then who?  Dempster?  Garza?  How do they shell out over $100M?

Soriano makes $18M, Dempster makes $12.5M and they are still paying Big Z $16M.  That is some dead weight.  Also, last year they were paying Aramis, and some other goons (Pena).  All that money adds up

I'm actually excited though as an A's fan.  Their team went from being a boring mediocre team to an exciting one.

This being his second violation, he should have had to serve a 100 game suspension.  But MLB apparently reduced it, and he will only have to serve another 50 gamer.

The Pirates will send right-handed reliever Diego Moreno and outfielder Exicardo Cayones to New York in return for A.J. Burnett. I feel like this trade is irrelevent for both teams cause the phillies are going to control the league this year.

I just read that the yankee's agreed to a one-year deal with raul ibanez for 1.1 million plus incentives. I cant believe that the phillies gave him up i mean he had his moments of just not being able to do anything but when he was hot he won the phillies a good bit of games.

I understand the Posey injury was really unfortunate and cast a pall over the Giants' season, but wasn't the fallout just a little much?  Now he is being ordered by his team to not block the plate?  What is this?

Its like a RB running out of bounds. Less impact on your body to prolong your career. Not saying I agree with that. Just answering your question.

Good to see Posey back in a Giants uniform, even if he has been ordered to not block the plate.  Why don't they just move him to an infield position?

This is just downright ludicrous, and it's really sad.  But I guess it gives the low-payroll guys a chip on their shoulder, as if they need more incentive to kick the Yankees' ass.

P.S. Dang the Marlins are up at $100M?  Step your game up!

Having a good catcher behind the plate is way more important to the team, calling pitches and controlling a game that way. That said, he's one of their few offensive options so putting him at first might not be a terrible idea to save wear and tear on his body.

I am not saying ordering him not to block the plate does not make practical sense.  Clearly, his lack of presence in the lineup was felt.  I guess I was being more rhetorical in the "what has baseball come to?"

But yeah, if they lose one game b/c he lets a run in and they trade it for keeping him healthy, it's a no-brainer.

Looks like the A's are gambling this year.  Sounds like they just signed Manny and his 50-game suspension.  Just for $500,000 though, so I guess it's worth a shot.

Obviously it's to bring fans to the stadium, maybe benefit from Manny wanting to show something again and hitting a little. But you're gonna have Manny being Manny in a clubhouse with lots of young guys, that should be fun.

posey's instincts are gonna tell him to block the plate.  he's probably gonna do it whether they tell him to or not.  they're obviously not gonna bench him if he does.  on the other hand though, he might be hesitant on his own from fear of it happening again.

Manny is a good pickup for the price.  You have to up your arsenal when the Angels are just getting stronger.  The sad part about Manny is that he doesn't care about his reputation or his body.  I think he is going to be the new test market for the next undetectable steroid.

Does he get drug tested during his suspension?  Because he could always do a cycle and get all juiced up, and then be clean before he gets back on the field.

I think hell be under even closer watch while he is suspended, I dont think thats going to stop him from doing some kind of cycle hes just going to look for the steriod that has a better chance of staying under the radar. But how many chances is the league going to give manny before they just dont allow him back in baseball.
