McCann signed with the Yankees for a 5 year worth $85M. I thought they were trying to unload some of these big contracts. There's no way they'll have room to sign Robbie. This is by far one of the worst signings in a long time even for the Yanks. Back to overpaying for an avg player with declining numbers. It'll come back to bite them.

McCann is not an average player he has hit 20 or more home runs in 6 of the last 7 years and the one year he didn't he hit 18.  He is hitting those home runs averaging catcher at bats so he has real power.  He is also a lefty and Yankees have a ridiculously short porch in left and he is a pull hitter.  He is only 29 and they can move him to DH or 1st base in years 4 and 5 if his defense deteriorates.  This was a good signing.

Sure he can still pop 20 HRs but that's doesn't help when he's been injury prone the last couple years and his BA is way down. At 29 years he should be in the prime but he's done the opposite and regressed. This was another typical Yankee signing by overpaying for a deteriorating player. $17M/ year for a guy who bats 20 HR and a .243 avg over the last two years is not a good signing IMO. Good addition with his lefty bat but not for 17M.

Tigers appear to be interested in Brian Wilson and Joe Nathan, wonder which one they will offer a contract to?

Yankees are chasing Beltran.

Same old Yankees. I guess they've realized there's no way they'll be able to sign Robbie so they're looking at alternative for power.

I am not sure why you say he is injury prone?  Okay he played in 102 games this year but has played in 120 or more games the 7 years prior to that. For a catcher that is pretty consistently healthy.  And an average of 256 and 20 homers is very good for a catcher.  Just disagree with you whole heartedly :)  Maybe an over pay but not horrible.

naw that's fine. But 120 gms is nowhere near 162 games. Plaint 2/3 of a season (and you can forget this last one at 102) is not exactly healthy. Seeing the decrease in games played the last two years is obviously a sign that he's not the player he once was. And it's def an overpay, not maybe.

A.J. Pierzynski signs with the Red Sox, so where does Saltalamacchia go?

Tigers send Doug Fister to the Nationals for 3 relatively unknown players, looks like Washington got the better part of that trade.

Money ball A's are spending some money, signing Scott Kazmir to a $22M/2 year contract and closer Jim Johnson to a $11M/1 year deal.  Where does Balfour end up?

I love all of the trading and FA signings although I'm still waiting for the Rockies to make a move... other than signing LaTroy...

Wow, Yankees plunk down $153M/7 years for Jacoby Ellsbury.

Beltran visiting KC who reportedly offered him $48M/3 years.

Saltalamacchia to the Marlins for $21M/3 years.  Salty is going from winning the World Series to one of the worst teams in baseball.

Rockies trade Fowler to Houston to free up some cash and (hopefully) sign a FA.

I'm surprised the Yankees didnt pursue Choo. That coulda got them so much more Korean fans.

They already have their token Asian in the OF. But after signing Ellsbury there is no way in hell Yankees are gonna be able to keep Robbie. This payroll gets more and more ridiculous by the day.

And looks like mourneau is headed to Colorado. Could have some big years.

Yeah, I agree that Ellsbury does preclude them signing Cano.  I think he is an equally good team guy and is probably a better guy to sign for 7 years.  They could still get Cano, but only if Cano will accept 6 years for under 150 mil.

I am curious as to if this increases Seattle's chance of getting Cano.  They have some money to spend and they are a faceless franchise.

I've been hearing a lot of rumors about the M's going after Choo. But if they've got the money, I wouldn't be surprised if they go after both Choo and Cano.

That sounds about right.  Jay-Z definitely got more than his share of the Nets and that Hublot watch he gave Cano as a gift.

Damn, I guess it does cut it! Well done M's. Maybe Robbie gave in on his $30M per year price tag as there weren't too many teams making offers. Now I think they'll go after Choo.

Reports of Beltran signing a 3-yr deal worth $45M with the Yankees. Looks like the evil empire is back in full force!

um 120 games is 3/4 of the season and he is a CATCHER...they take games off regularly.

That is exactly what I thought when I heard of the Beltran signing.  They might get even more before it's all said and done.

They've reloaded on hitting so much it's kinda scary what they have on paper. Interesting to see that lineup next season. But they need some help in pitching now.

Doc Halladay signed a one day contract today to retire as a blue jay. Tough to see him call it quits. He was def one of the most dominant pitchers in this era for a while until the last couple years due to injuries. It's a shame to see him go but he'll be a blue jay forever.

Crazy day on Friday starting with Beltran signing with the Yankees, $45M/3 years.  Granderson leaves the Yankees for the Mets, $60M/4 years.  Napoli stays in Boston, $32M/2 years.

Anyone see a pattern?  Big money deals but the longest is 4 years.  Other than Cano's 10 year deal and Ellsbury's 7 year deal you probably aren't going to see many contracts that go longer than 4 or 5 years.

Rangers interested in Cruz or Choo.

Tigers sign Rajai Davis.

Roy Halladay retires.  What an arm.  What a workhorse.  Hope he enjoys his retirement.

^ DBacks get Trumbo, Adam Eaton to the White Sox, Tyler Skaggs and Hector Santiago to the Angels.  DBacks get 2 players to be named later, one from the W-Sox and one from the Angels.

Trumbo and Goldschmidt batting 3 - 4?

Rockies make a move... and get lefty Brett Anderson from the A's for Drew Pomeranz and Chris Jensen.  Welcome to the thin air of Coors Field, Brett.

great signing by the dodgers...getting Wilson back is huge...apparently talks about trading Kemp are heating up...I understand the thought process but Ellsbury just signed for more annually than Kemp's contract and he has been more injury prone than Kemp and is not nearly the player if both healthy. If they trade him they better get a lot in return. Before Kemp hit that wall in Colorado going all out on the play he averaged 159 games a year in his career.

Not liking this new rule change about banning home-plate collisions. I'm sure buster posey has a different opinion but I think it's all part of the game like fighting in hockey. Taking that aspect of the game out kinda reduces it to somewhat of a rec softball game. Might as well draw that "commitment line" half way down the third base line if they really want to eliminate contact all together.

If there's no contact, then the base runner has no chance once the catcher has the ball or about to have possession of the ball and waiting at the plate. It's a guaranteed out. This really takes away from the game. Idk just my thought on it.

^I wonder what they are going to do at second base with break-ups.  They aren't exactly "collisions," but it definitely isn't a case of players just trying to get to the bag either.

I wish the MLB would do away with the phantom base tag at 2B on double plays.  Sometimes the 2nd baseman or shortstop isn't even close to 2B and the runner is called out, ridiculous.

Some smaller deals over the past few days:  Nats sign Nate McLouth, Giants sign Michael Morse, Tigers sign Joba Chamberlain, Phillies sign Roberto Hernandez, Braves sign Jordan Walden.

More signings:

Yankees sign Brian Roberts for $2M/1 year and Matt Thornton for $7M/2 years.

Cubs closing in on a $4M/1 year deal for Jose Veras.

Orioles sign former Oakland A Grant Balfour for $15M/2 years not too long after trading their RP Jim Johnson to the A's... ironic, isn't it?

KC signs Omar Infante for $30M/4 years.

I heard Johnny Bench talking about it and he is definitely behind the change.  Based on the interview it sounded like they are not banning collisions entirely but only in the case where the runner is intentionally going after the catcher when he is clearly going to be out.  I know that is not something you are in favor of but it sounds like bang bang plays can still have contact based on the interview...I dont know but sounds pretty subjective.

While I am behind improving the game to reduce injuries, especially concussions, this type of rule provides the umpires just another way of screwing up a call.  How many times did they blow a call last season?  New rules, more rules... these rules are going to confuse the old guys.

Joaquin Benoit to the Padres for $15.5M/2 years.

Indians sign John Axford for $4.5M/1 year.

Braves acquire Ryan Doumit from the Twins.

And my Rockies re-acquire Franklin Morales from the BoSox and pick up Drew Stubbs from the Indians.

I just saw the stuff on Choo. I hope he gets a similar deal at least.

Crazy contract in regards to Choo. Seven year deal worth $130M. Not surprised given the recent signings. Should've come in at around 45M per year plus incentives plus a small island country. With this money, Choo could buy North Korea from kim Jong-un and put a stop to the regime.

In all seriousness, I like Choo but that's really overpaying a guy who has never had 100+ RBI season (54 last season) or hit 25+ homers nor a gold glove winner. But I guess his OBP and runs scored makes up for all that. It'll be hard to move him once this deal goes south. I guess teams will never learn.

Dodgers pickup Chris Perez. Seems like they're stacking up on closers from other teams.

Justin Verlander and Kate Upton were spotted together at the Flyers game... hmmm, he pitched well when he was dating her and then pitched like crap when the breakup rumors started... as a Tigers fan I'm not sure I approve of this relationship.

And today came A-Rod's expected lawsuit, since he doesn't want to be accountable for cheating: http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/10288380/alex-rodriguez-sues-mlb-union-seeking-reversal-suspension

I have yesterday's 60-minutes DVR'd but haven't watched it yet.

This guy just needs to go away after its all said and done. It wouldn't surprise me that after he's retired, he'll try to sue MLB again as to why he's not being elected to the hof.

So the Cubs have an official mascot now and some people are hating this. Why the hell would this upset anyone? haha
