Jeter announced his final season, so he can go collect gifts from all the teams like Mariano Rivera did Shocked

It will be a huge long victory lap, but he's earned it.

I'd hate to be the guy to have to takeover at SS after this season.

^ Those are some big shoes to fill.  I despise the Yankees but Jeter is a class act.  And he gets more top notch ass than a toilet seat at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Can't trust E-Rod at third. Wouldn't want him at SS.

Barry Bonds. Giants spring training instructor. We don't need Barry. We need Balco.

I wish I could make it to Spring training.  But I am just glad baseball is getting going.  As a Cubs fan, it is the time of the most potential!

Giants started with a loss to Oakland. I totally forgot to check it out. I have to wait till Friday, to see if the panda is in shape.

I'll be honest, I've never heard of a Bauer in the Jays farm system. I just hope the Jays stay healthy and have a much better season from a year ago.

Heading out on Sunday morning hoping to make the 1pm game vs the Yankees.

Split squad action for the Giants today. Battling the A's and Brewers. Its always kinda weird to me how they split teams up.

I wonder how long it'll take the Yankees to be able to develop homegrown talent that can be a lifer like Jeter? Maybe in 50 yrs.... or never?

They usually rent free agents for a high price, so 50-never sounds accurate.

Giants win one and lose one in split squad action. Too much to keep tabs on. Especially for preseason.

Spring training Jays/Yankees game was sold-out. Grabbed some tickets to the Jays/Phills instead. Much nicer stadium from what I've heard.

Spring training is great... the optimist think his team looks great and is ready to make a run for the World Series... career minor leaguers have a shot to make the MLB team... kids just out of high school or college get to play alongside and against seasoned veterans... old veterans get a chance to prove they still have something in the tank... so much hope for everyone.

I don't worry too much about spring training games. Guys are still getting their games back, finding their zones. Teams are trying out players that may or may not stay in the majors. So, we're not seeing what the teams are actually capable of doing. It's just pre-season, and they don't count...

Phillies have a pretty sick stadium down in Clearwater. Kinda beats that hole in the ground the Jays play in.

Cliff Lee looking solid tonight. Dickey not so much.

Who were the top 10 picks?  I would imagine Trout, Cabrera, McCutchen, Goldschmidt, Cano, Cargo and Kershaw have to be in the top 10.

Surprisingly, Cano went in late second and Cargo dropped to early third rd. Kershaw went 7th. Would've loved to snag a Kershaw/Darvish combo. Davis, JV, Wainwright, Scherzer, Hanley were all up there. Almost had Greinke as my third pick.

^ Wow, Cano late in the 2nd round and Cargo in the 3rd round?  I would have enjoyed that draft.  Depending on the format of the league and the way points are earned starting pitchers are fine to draft but they only get into every 5th game.  A productive every day infielder or outfielder will play 150+ games.  Interesting...

I suspect all the managers are thinking that Cano's numbers will drop this year since he's hitting at Safeco now which would explain his slide. But not too sure as to why Cargo slid as well. I had him last year and he was on a tear till he went down. But had I been somewhere in the middle of the draft, I think I would've taken advantage of that fact. Damn, that last pick!!!

Yeah on starting pitching, I just feel like there is so much talent in that position that you don't need to draft pitchers super early.  While SPs can rack up Ks and help your ERA and win situation, getting a really good second baseman or shortstop just seems to be more difficult cuz there aren't as many of them.  You never really know who is going to have a great year as a starting pitcher.  Look at what Jose Fernandez did last year with Miami, his numbers were sick.  My gf picked him up like a month into the season as a free agent.  You can get a lot of value lower in the draft or even after the draft at the SP position.

^^ I see where you're coming from. I've drafted players based on position scarcity numerous times instead of taking prime SP and it's never worked out. There's a ton of good pitching but not great consistent pitching. So I wouldn't pass on an Adam Wainwright or JV if they came my way for an injury prone SS just to fill the spot and then have high expectations of a "good" pitcher I draft later on. I feel position players are more prone to getting injured anyways since they play everyday.

Being from St. Louis and an avid Cardinals fan I want nothing more than the birds to win another WS but I won't be surprised if they fall out in the playoffs. They need to put Lynn in the minors keep Wacha, Miller and Kelly as starters.

I also feel that instant replay shouldn't be allowed.

Contact with the catcher should be only below the shoulders unless the catcher leans in. Just like football. There's a difference between necessary and unnecessary. Back when catchers did drop the ball, contact made sense. Now I rarely see them drop it... or is that because I'm watching Molina?

^^ Why no likee the instant replay? This game needs serious improvement. Way too many botched calls go down.

As for contacting the catcher, I'm indifferent to it but I understand that the league is just protecting the catchers from more concussions.

Definitely agree on the injury thing.  My gf drafted Jose Reyes and David Wright, and they were both injured like all year, totally screwed up her team.  Then again, Cueto (also on her team) went down and was on the DL like 3 times last  year.  She got so screwed with injuries hahaha.

My fantasy draft is this Friday, I need to really buckle down and figure out my strategy.  And I guess I have to brush up on injuries, apparently Jarrod Parker needs Tommy John again?  I heard there were a few SPs with season-ending injuries, but I havent really read the news much.

Replay will slow things down. The game has gone for so long without instant replay. And from a numbers perspective, the umpires do a really outstanding job. I don't think the game needs any improvement in that sense.

Collisions at the plate can be made safer without removing them entirely. Contact below the shoulder is all I'm asking. The runners know what they are doing. It's not hard to tell whether they are targeting a catchers head or not. If they target the glove, less concussions will occur.

I believe Parker and Griffin are both out for the A's. Medlen for the Braves. Beachy might not need season ending surgery. But I think ultimately he'll take that route. GL on your draft. Lemme know it goes. Already did one for work but my doing a 2nd draft with buddies isn't till April 6th. We're forfeiting the first week.

That's where the problem lies. The fact that the game has gone on so long without any changes or improvements, ppl and fans are fearful of new changes. Instant replay isn't a bad thing. And it won't slow things down cuz managers are given one challenge (to use by the 7th inning). If it's upheld, then that manager retains the challenge. So they'll only have a max of 2 challenges per game (again, up to the 7th only). As for umps, they do a good job but the calls are clearly inconsistent when you deal with various ups especially behind the plate. This is much needed.

But I agree with the home-plate collisions. It seems like the catcher will always have the advantage vs a runner attempting to score. They might as well have added the "commitment line" like the ones used in softball. But contact should still be allowed beneath the shoulders.

Okay, so it won't slow things down that much. I just don't think it's necessary. I agree that there are times when I wish they did review and overturn a call.
But how do they decide what happens when something is overturned.

A runner is called out at first being the third out. Runner from first was rounding second and on his way to third. Play is reviewed. Overturned. Where does the runner end up. Then we have disputes over what should happen then. Sports are based off of judgement calls. Adapting to changing umpires. Adapting to conditions.

Then you get to the conclusive evidence. How many times on TV have you seen "conclusive evidence" and the referee come back and says that the play stands.

Look at other sports that haven't changed much over time. Cricket. Rugby. What has changed?

Why not just have all the umpires behind a tv screen somewhere and make the calls from there?

Those would be questions for Mr. Selig. But as for disputes, I'm sure it would still come down to the umps for the final decision based on the conclusive evidence. Regardless, this will improve the game, it'll just take time getting used to it.

I have no problem with getting used to it. I just don't see where the "improvement" will be. But I guess we will see at the end of the season.

Yeah I read about Griffin that really hurts for the A's.  And thanks man, I'll definitely let you know how the draft goes.  That's crazy you're in multiple leagues, I can't imagine being in more than one with how many games are in the baseball season hahaha.

I think getting calls right = improvement. I don't like the human error element. If a runner beat the ball, he beat the ball. I don't want a judgement call depending on which ump is watching the base that day. I'm all for instant replays. Clap

Just saw the highlights of the Cincy/KC game. Damn, Aroldis Chapman taking a linedrive come-backer off the face!!! Ouch

So.... where are these hard hats again?

^ That was a helluva of a shot Chapman took.  The larger protective hat would not have helped him, the line drive smashed his nose and just above his left eye.  The only thing that might have made a difference is if he was wearing a batting helmet with a cage (Little League style) but no major league baseball player will wear one of those unless he already has a broken bone in his face.

Remember John Olerude?  He used to wear a batting helmet in the field since he suffered a brain aneurysm while playing in college.

Pitchers are the most vulnerable fielder, typically they are not in a good position to react to a come-backer line drive as they are usually in their follow-through position.  My guess is MLB will come up with some form of optional face/head protection but most pitchers will not use it.

Third basemen get some hot shots hit at them, too.  My high school buddy (played 3B) suffered a fractured cheekbone and orbital socket on a liner right at him, never had a chance to defend himself.
