Alright, so I'm begininning to think about a trip to AK for my Senior year of High School (next year). Probably for 1-2 weeks. Depends a lot on where I go to school and such, but it will probably happen, though these are just general ideas as of now (hoping Spenser will chime in on this).
Looking to go around mid-April, probably. The only person who I think will go with me (a lot to ask of friends) will be my dad, who is an avid fisherman, but does not really ski. I believe he would be interested in Halibut or salmon, though he is not really a fly fisherman. I figured April would be a month were there still might be some really good snow, and fishing may be beginning. PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong, this is my biggest question. I could also come in February (no fishing) or June (definitely corn snow). I really haven't decided on a specific area yet, as I really want to do get the most out of it. Maybe someplace on the coast for a few days of fishing, then head further inland for a little boarding. I know they do trips called "kings and corn," but when I come to AK I don't really wanna spend a ton of $ on corn snow, I wanna get some of that stuff its famous for, but I might be pushing it a bit with April? Are strong melt freeze cycles likely to have begun? Anyway, any recommendations for areas and guide services... we might meet up with a friend of friend for fishing, so I just was wondering about riding guides... I don't know how many days of heli time I'm gonna be able to get, budget will range anywhere from $2,000--f*cking awesome time (if I get into a military academy). So anyone have any recommendation for guide operations? again, not gonna limit to any specific area, so if you have a recommendation throw it out there! Thanks a ton!!!!!!!!!!

fly fishing is for smallfry. if you want salmon and halibut you'll be in the ocean.
if you come in april you have to go to anchorage to ride alyeska. eaglecrest closes mid april every year no matter how much snow there is and it's only open on weekends for those last two weeks. alyeska will give you a typical resort experience and anchorage will give you a typical city experience. there is lots of scenery but as non-anchorage people say, it's not "real alaska." just another city. keep that in mind. weather is unpredictable. i've ridden through april with rain and crap snow, and i've ridden through april with pow every single day as if it was mid-winter. you simply never know. basically, you have two options for riding, juneau or anchorage. april = anchorage. march in juneau is usually a good bet though and you can get some fishing in, i just don't know the exact timing as to when fishing really starts to take off. anyway, pretty consistently great conditions. a couple years ago i made a full season video and my "springtime" section looked most like winter by far, all the way through march. my last day in mid april was deep pow in the sun all day long. if you want to spend all your riding time in a heli then you can go wherever. juneau, haines, valdez, etc.

also, heli time can be amazing all the way into may most of the time. up in the higher mountains it's pretty much winter conditions all through spring.. haines goes off for a long time.
