not sure if going to south korea is a good idea right now...the north just announced they'll wipe out the south soon...and the attack will only last 3-4 minutes. the new leader is trying to redeem himself after the failed "rocket" launch.

I was in South Korea two years ago and I don't remember going to get a Visa for it. Looking at my passport just now, confirmed there was no visa attached.
Government site doesn't mention requiring a Visa also: http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/Advice/South_Korea |

I heard North has a bunch of "rockets" but they're all poorly made fakes.

nah yong pyong is far east.. in the seperate province.
ahh it was pretty hard at start, when we arrived and was looking for something to eat. we dind't know how do say are u still open.. so half the time we were doing hand signals.. lolz google translate on phone is useless.. dont' bother with that. borrow a lonley planet guide from libary, that'll help a bit. but don't follow instructions on how ot get to places, it's completely wrong. instead go ask people, like info desk or hotel etc on how to get there. Some phrases we picked up on our trip yo gi oh = excuse me, or attention in a restruant. only used in restuarant. Ju se oh = please give me du myon = 2 people please (when u go into restuarant) people there are pretty friendly and try to help you out as much as they can seeing as ur not from korea. espesh the older people. there are more people in seoul who understand broken english, so you can communicate some how. else try chinese.. (if u know it) trains is easy because they broadcast korean, chinese, english and japanese about the next station and there's a TV telling u the next station. Else take a taxi, it's cheap... cost like $5 to go places average. 30-40min ride was like $15. but always have a map of where you're going because addresses in korea don't mean anything. ur hotel should also have a card with map, so def take that! hope that gives you some useful info.

No you don't need one for South Korea.
I visit almost every year using my Aussie passport and it is not required :) If unsure, you can always check with the consulate. |

yay! have fun.
Also very important for korea: ![]() This is the sign for a HOTEL in korea (its also the sign for an onsen in japan). Hotels are EVERYWHERE. I have no idea how they stay in business to be honest, but there are literally billions of the things. (except in hongdae for some bizarre reason - could never find one of these cats anytime i was there). This means you dont really have to dick around booking hotels in super pricey international accommodation. Even in seoul you can ninja a room for about 25,000 yen if youre wiling to pop into an occasional back alley to find them. Oh and net cafes are everywhere as well. How to use a net cafe. Walk in the door, head to the counter, pick up one of the very prominent plastic cards (itll have a four number ID usually in teh form of 00xx). Pick a computer, sit down, input the number as a password and enjoy SUPER CHEAP net access (and er, lung cancer). When youre finished, just take the card to the dude, and thats that.
