You all need to stop talking about any other team because the Bears got this season in the bag.

The bears won't even make the playoffs. They'll finish 3rd in their division behind the Packers and the Lions. Wouldn't be surprised if they fell behind the Vikings either. Cutler is a joke and so are the Bears.

C'mon, everybody knows it's the Cowboy's year. Romo, Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, a healthy DeMarco Murray and Felix Jones, Jason Witten, and a new and improved defense. Well, at least until December...

Every preseason is always "the Cowboy's year". And it stays that way until that group of misfits has to take the field and has to try to compete with the rest of the NFL. Then begins the list of paltry excuses (Romo, management, Romo, Romo, ownership, Romo) as to why they couldn't win enough games to get to the playoffs, or at best if they do reach a playoff game, why they're only a one-and-done team.

The Cowboys are basically the Kardashians. They have a lot of glitz and glamour, and will always be a lead story. At the end of the day, what have they done that merits the type of attention they get (in last decade, I mean, 5 SB titles is 5 SB titles)?

Awe is someone still mad at Cutler for leaving Denver? The Bears added a lot to their team this offseason and will end up near the top of the league.

Nice to see someone support all their local squads :). And the Bears likely would have made the playoffs instead of the bears if it wasnt for Forte's injury. That stopped 'em dead in their tracks. But the Lions have beefed up their defense this year, which they really needed. Now they just gotta be able to score in quarters earlier than the 4th.

I think the Bears are a solid squad and have a pretty good chance of making the playoffs, but I don't see how anyone can think their team has it "in the bag." I am an Eagles fan, and believe me, I have heard enough "Dream Team" comments to build a house. Vince Young seemed to think last season was in the bag, and that got them real far.

I'm eager to see how the Seachickens perform with their new QB. Assuming he's not as injury-prone as Hasselbeck, it could be a fun season (though SF is still gonna dominate the NFC West).

That could be a good show, too. The Rams really have been trying to build something solid of late, but unfortunately have been plagued with injuries. If they can get a healthy team together, the NFC West could be one of the more interesting divisions to watch. Even the Cards have a flash in the pan every so often :)

Welcome to the NFL RGIII. Hasn't even got to training camp and people in his past are already trying to extort money. Just remember, something like 70% of all NFL players are broke within 5 years out of the league. Cut those people off now.

Players association just requested that the NFL investigate whether the Saints are negotiating with him in good faith... There are those that think they are being so rigid with him as payback for his vocal leadership with the player's union. I think that is a stretch, though.

I saw that headline: "49ers Smith Stabbed at Party" and I thought, uh-oh, Justin Smith is one of their best players.... then realized it was Aldon Smith and knew there would be relief in 49er nation. Is that bad?

Will they please stop putting a microphone in front of Donovan McNabb's annoying pie hole? He has three teams he wants to play for? What planet is this guy from? And he is still taking shots at T.O.? T.O. is jerk, but that nonsense happened 7 years ago

McNabb was great in Minnesota and Washington, and he was always clutch in Philly. As a Giants fan I would like to see him behind center somewhere in the NFC next year, because he will make some team worse.

I know the NFL offseason police blotter can get rather lengthy, but I did not expect to see Adrian Peterson make an appearance.

Totally out of character for AP, I'll hold my judgement until all the facts come out.
And yes, worst offseason that I can remember.

AP is charged with resisting arrest, but, what charges were they arresting him for before he resisted? If he wasn't being arrested for something, how can he resist being arrested? Shouldn't there be an assault, weapons, or drugs charge or something that comes before he could resist being arrested?

As much of an NFL Football fan that i am... it's amazing how stupid some of the players are. Granted there are far more players that are good people how attempt to do the 'right' thing in life & with the incredible opportunity that they have. But some of these guys are such morons, squandering the chance of a lifetime & routinely getting themselves into trouble. At some point they might need to change the name of the league to the National Felon League.

It is ridiculous that they have not worked something out with Brees yet. Now he is saying he will sit out camp and not sign the franchise tender if he isn't signed. I know this is the same franchise that gave us bounty-gate, but seriously, what the hell is going on down there.

Some of them over at seahawks.net are claiming they will go 13-3 and compete for a SB lol

Maybe they'll go 7-9, yet again.
They do have a good defense, arguably the top secondary in the league, but they have so many questions regarding their linebackers and offense. I think they'll compete for 2nd place in the division with the Cards, but I would LLOOOOOVEEEE it if they finished dead last.

Why is everyone handing the division to the 49ers? Weird things happen every year and there is always one favored team that under-performs and another that comes out of nowhere. The Niners have the most talent and the best defense, but the NFL season is super unpredictable.

Agreed, I mean look at the Niners last year, brand new coach in a lockout shortened offseason and they shocked the entire NFL by how close they came to the Super Bowl. Anything can happen.
However, the NFC West is the Niners' division to lose this year. They are arguably one of the most complete teams in the entire NFL, let alone their own division. They brought back their entire starting defense and brought in a brand new stable of WRs and LaMichael James. With Harbaugh/Fangio/Roman having an entire offseason to further implement their schemes, logic dictates that the Niners will be a better team. They won't go 13-3, more like 11-5, but they'll be a better team overall and I guarantee you no one will want to face them in the playoffs. Injuries are the one thing that could derail them, but they do have good depth at most positions.
The Rams under Fisher are in a rebuilding mode, and I'm still not totally sold on Bradford, but knowing what Alex Smith went through,. They should compete in 2-3 years, especially with that enormous haul of draft picks they accumulated by trading away the #2 pick.
The Cardinals have a solid defense top to bottom, but their offense is still suspect. Who is even their QB? Skelton? Kolb? Their offensive line is awful too, they brought back Levi Brown LOL and signed Snyder. I loved Snyder last year, but there was a reason the Niners didn't resign him.
The Seahawks have arguably the best secondary in the league, but their LB corp and D-line still have a lot of questionable what ifs. And like the Cardinals, they have a QB competition between 3 people. It's not allowing their entire offense to gel. Plus, Pete Carroll is not a good game day coach. Really good organizer and "rah-rah" guy, but not that talented at coaching on Sundays. A lot of the hype from the Seahawks fans are due to their late season push for a playoff spot, but look at the teams they played in their last 8 games from last season. Then take a look at the first 8 games they play this season. They're going to be in for a rough awakening.
I can get more detailed about each division rival, but I'm lazy. But like I said, this year it is the Niners' division to lose unless major injuries come into play. Next year and beyond, not so much. At the very least, we can say that the NFC West is no longer the doormat of the NFL.

No, the 49ers will win the NFC West without a problem. The main reason is that the other teams are garbage. I totally agree with you in every other division in football.

That's quite the essay! But very well written :). I'm a Seahawks fan but I wouldn't say I'm terribly biased. I've grown accustomed to them losing year after year lol. As far as the QB competition goes, Jackson has not proven his arm to be terribly reliable, so it should be Flynn's position for the taking. It will be interesting to see how Flynn performs in the preseason. Being as he's been Rodger's underling and only has one game of note, he'll still have to prove himself. And the preseason schedule should provide him a couple opportunities to show off his talent(s). Of course, there's plenty of opposing D-line trying to make the cut, so we'll see how that goes. I'm just hoping he's not too injury prone. Step up, O-line! As far as a preseason, end-of-season record prediction (and I really hate prophesying this $#!+), I'd go within a game of .500.

Alka - I think your phrase: " the NFC West is the Niners' division to lose this year" sums it up. I guess I was saying that based on talent and coaching, they should win the division. Having said that, you never know. They aren't sneaking up on anyone this year. But with the rest of the division unproven, especially at the QB position, niners look like they are in good shape. When Alex Smith is the most established QB in the division, that is saying something.

Uh no.
The other teams are not "garbage". The Seahawks had a top 10 defense last year, and a solid back in Lynch. They remind me a lot of the Niners a few years back, talented defense, but a suspect offense and IMHO, a sub-par coach. If not for Ginn's 2 special team TDs in the home opener, the first game would have been much closer, and the second game at Seattle was a battle too. The Cardinals also have a very solid defense, and did you forget they beat us at home last year?
The Rams are on the rise as well, they are young, have a good coach, and are in a rebuilding phase. They should compete for the division in a few years.
Like I said, it is the Niners' division to lose this year, but to say that they will "win it without a problem" is laughable.

I know the feeling of losing year after year. Even last year, it took me like 6-7 games before I began to fully believe in the team, just due to the fact that the past decade has been miserable. I kept expecting the bottom to fall out at any moment.
I'm very curious to see what happens with Seattle's QB situation. I lurk over at seahawks.net, and many of them believe Flynn to be the reincarnate of Aaron Rodgers and Matt Hasselbeck combined lol. The one thing that I have an issue with is that Green Bay's offensive line and their WR corps are much more established than what Seattle has. Also, with Flynn going into a brand new offensive scheme, it may take him awhile to get comfortable. One thing I can almost guarantee is that he will not consistently throw for 400+ yards and 6 TDs a game. If he does, I'll eat my Willis jersey haha.
I'm really curious to see what Russell Wilson can do. I know his size is an issue for some people, but the dude is a baller.

When Alex Smith is the most established QB in the division, that is saying something. |
I agree, on paper, the Niners should win the division, but like you said, you never know. Injuries play a part. Teams that should compete utterly fail, ie. the "Dream Team" Eagles and teams that should not compete can can come out of nowhere, ie. the 2011 Niners.
They aren't sneaking up on anyone this year, and as a Niner fan, it finally feels good again to know that other teams look at their schedules, see the 49ers and know that game will be a dogfight.
I can get into an Alex Smith debate if you want, I am a huge fan of his, due to the circumstances he was forced into and the fact that he has never complained or been a team distraction. I think a lot of people undervalue him, just due to his past, but at the same time, that is the past and he proved last year he can play at a very high level. With the added weapons the 49ers added in the offseason, I fully believe the Niners have the potential to be a top 10 offense to go along with their elite defense and special teams. Look out NFL.
