What does the guy have to do?

He'll be back to start against the Rams. You don't start an essentially rookie QB in the middle of a Super Bowl/deep playoff run.

Even Harbaugh said that if Alex had been cleared earlier than Friday, he would've played. It was the lack of game preparation due to Smith's injury that led to Kaepernick's second start.
Smith will be back under center for the rest of the season, barring injury.

Next season? Who knows..

THAT'S FUNNY TO MENTION THAT because harbaugh said he'd announce his decision by wednesday.....should be QUITE interesting if he picks CK...
on that note, if CK gets injured, we get alex smith back regardless...at this point, we have TWO starting QBs.

on another note...i hate to say it but i tihnk CK is the better QB...he adds so many extra dimensions to the game, it makes our entire OFFENSE look like a bunch of badasses BEYOND the 20yard line

and our defense? they were already monsters...

Niners just signed Lb Navorro Bowman to a 5 year extension. We now have all 4 of our starting linebackers signed through the 2015 season. Willis, Bowman, Aldon, and Brooks. Now to get Goldson's deal done...

Well, I was completely wrong.

I've always been a fan, and a supporter, but it looks like the writing is on the wall. Bye Alex..

Gotta trust Harbaugh. He knows more than us.

I'm not surprised. Kaepernick is the future of the team and he should get as much playing time as possible to gain experience. He has done well so far, and there's no reason to sit him right now. These few games before the playoffs start will get him more snaps under his belt. Get more looks at different defenses. Make more throws and build chemistry with the receivers. This will pay dividends during the playoffs. Worse case scenerio, Kaepernick can't handle the pressure, SF still has Smith ready to step in. If Smith starts now, and Kapernick doesn't get the playing time. If Smith goes down and CK needs to step up, he wouldn't have had the experience in order to handle it.

I've always wanted to see Alex Smith succeed and honestly have no idea why. Maybe its the fact hes always seemed to get a raw deal from the media, and many fans. Oh well, I hope Kaepernic works out for the 9ers.

Doubtful.  They most likely will be starting Geno Smith or Matt Barkley next season.

I doubt the Niners let smith go. He'd probably be the best backup QB. Also depends how third stringer Tolzein is doing.

I think the 49ers will get rid of Alex Smith in the off season, they don't need him and they will give him that respect to have him start somewhere else. Like Jacksonville, cause they sure as hell need a QB.

I think the Eagles just decided to throw the season. Hey good idea birds lets get rid of one of the better D-ends that we have for nothing. That was a brilliant idea Eagles. Not even two days of him being released and a team sign him right away.

alex has been very good this year, at times great but for me personally, when alex is out there, im nervous every drive. with kaepernick, i feel very confident that we can score every time. his accuracy has allowed the receivers to work their way down field and make big plays happen.
i do feel bad for alex but the offense just seems so much more unpredictable because of kaepernicks ability to run and throw on the run. kaepernick is harbaughs pick as well and if this is the kind of qb he is going to be, i see this being very difficult for harbaugh to bench kaepernick.funny to have a controversy like this with qb's. its usually the jets situation but instead its two very good qbs. im glad im not the coach haha

sucks that we're in a "win now" situation and i DEFINITELY feel for alex :/

god damn it, alex smith freaking DESERVED the star and now, after all that work, this could very well be his LAST season here with the 49ers

at least he's rich but still...he deserves a little more class than this :/

Smith has been in the league for about 7 years. We've seen his limitations. Kaepernick has shown more potential in the two starts.
In Harbaughs first year, they drafted a QB. The 1st clue Smith was on his way out. They only gave him a two year deal and Harbaugh said it takes two years to learn his system. Hint Hint. No matter what he says, the Niners checked out Peyton Manning. Not sure why some are so surprised.

You let Smith walk, and you have 7.5 million (iirc) to spend on resigning Goldson, Soap, RJF, or other free agents we need.

I'm a Smith fan, always been a big supporter, but I think he's gone next season.

Theres no way Smith will be there next year, Harbaugh has no faith in him for whatever reason. What has been done, can't be undone.

The NFL is a business and they aren't going to want to spend Millions on smith if he's watching from the sidelines.  They will trade him for a mid round draft pick and use the money Smith would have been owed on re-signing/signing free agents.  He will not be a 9er next season.

I just dont understand the psychology of the situation. Harbaugh spent all last season praising smith, building his confidence and subsequently molding him into a highly effective player and suddenly, overnight, thats all over because a rookie with great athletic ability played great for one game and decent for another.

If I were Alex Smith, I'd take a pay cut and stay in SF to be the backup next year (if SF actually want to keep him). He's had different coaches and different systems and he's only done well under Harbough. He'll be back to his mediocre/bad self once he goes to another team.

the man is essentially out of a job and it REALLY sucks :/

Alex Smith was average before Harbaugh and will be average if he starts somewhere else. Beware the system QB. Cassell, Kolb, etc. Great HC getting the most out of them.

fun fact, the next qb selected after Alex Smith, who was the first pick in the 2005 draft was Aaron Rodgers.

A Kansas city chief player killed himself, and possibly his girlfriend at there house. WTF is going on with this team. They haven't released the name yet, but this is terrible.

edit-rumored to be Jovan Belcher

Agreed. There's so much for me to be upset about with this game. hated the decision to go with ck and there we go. mistakes that shouldn't have been made. we're not a team that needs explosive plays. we have solid defense that just needs to get the job done on offense. so many plays that made me just flip out yelling at my tv with ck. akers didn't  help the cause either but this game should not have been lost........

Harbaugh has already been quoted as saying he's happy with CK's play today and will have him start next week. He must be mad at Alex, cuz that's not a rational decision.

He has to say that, its like when Roger Goodell said the right call was made by the replacement refs then ends the strike.  It could be worst you could be a jets fan.

if harbaugh sticks with CK for the rest of the season, i think he's doing for BIGGER reasons...possibly for the future of the organization

it sucks to just cast alex smith over to the side line...in the end, it's all just business...

This happened every year in Denver with Cutler at QB, season started off great then around week 12 the losses would start to pile up. Can't remember how many times we just needed one damn win to make the playoffs, and never could get it. At first they attributed the teams fall off to Cutlers undiagnosed diabetes, yet the trend lives on.

it's easy to blame cutler but the offense did it's job...
defense just couldn't get the job done.

as for the SF qb situation, harbaugh was a qb himself and he knows what it takes to play qb and what a nfl qb should be capable of. he works with these guys everyday and i would have to think that as a head coach he would be able to assess his players skills. if he thinks CK is his starting qb there must be good reason.

The Big difference between Alex and CK is CK has the threat of the run.  With QBs pretty much running the the league adding the extra factor of the run is a killer for defences.  Not only they have to stop the arm but also the treat of the run. He is a rookie and there isn't a lot of game film on him, Harbaugh drafted him and im sure he is keeping that pretty close to his heart.   I just don't understand how a QB who has been great lead the team to the playoffs and it would have been the superbowl if the punt returner held that ball, you can just replace him after an injury.

Oh man what a game last night. I really needed RG3 not to have a huge game and it happened. Because of him having a low scoring game I won a fantasy game that lead to me clinching and advancing to playoffs.

Now if only the Bears can get their sht together fully, that would be nice.

Bronco's better close out this game early in the 3rd quarter.  You never want to let a team hang around until the end.  Bronco's need to get more pressure on Carson Palmer.

is it just me? or is common sense not that common.

Not gonna' lie to you guys... I'm super stoked how well my main man Peyton is doing this season.  Now, if they can only tighten it up and represent well in the playoffs... I can't believe i'm turning into a broncos fan... I just can't believe it. LOL
