Board on Niseko.
Stay in Grand Hirafu. ???? Profit. :) Seriously. First time, just go to niseko. Itll blow your head off. I honestly dont think theres much else to say. I could recommend you go to kiroro or rusutsu, but you might as well get sick of niseko first. And unless "im sick of all this snow, i just wish we'd get a nice day of crust and ice" is something youre likely to say, then chances are youll be there for a fair while before youre sick of it. |

I think Sensei would be more appropriate! Listen to Ippy, he helped make my trip to Japan so much better than if i'd done it without any of his advice! |

the only thing you dont get in niseko is a "japanese" experience
the place is completely "sanitised" for the western palate but since its a snowboarding/ski trip....who cares ...some people even consider this a bonus ![]() also book within 2 days to get early bird specials still floating around ![]() |

Thats one of the amazing things about niseko too. If you WANT the japanese experience, you can just stay over at annupuri instead :) And right next to niseko is Kutchan which is about as japanese a town as youre gonna get. No mod cons there :)
If you like being pampered though, you can stay at niseko village which is really just the hilton hotel. Outrageously expensive with ski in/ski out. Pretty much the japanese ski experience right there. Hirafu isnt a typical japanese ski experience, its got a nightlife and cafes and things you might want to do in your free time that isnt just omiyage shopping (crappy trinkets you buy for your colleagues back home). It also doesnt shut everything down by 9pm so you can all retire to your lodge to down a couple of chu hais and go to bed by 10pm for a nice early (6am) start for you and all your screaming kids clumping around in ski boots. The japanese SKI experience isnt all its cracked up to be. The japanese NATURE experience is though. And youll get plenty of that in niseko. One downside is it probably will be filled by bogans and you might have to share a gondola with some of them. But theres honestly a reason why hakuba and niseko get sent them by the boatload. If its your first trip to hokkaido (and i might even say japan) and you dont go niseko because youd want the real japanese experience, id say youre daft. Do all that in shiga kogen or nozawa. Or better yet, do it in Kyoto and Nara. :) Come surf ridiculously light and fluffy pow and hate the rest of your life because youre not riding it ever day.

LOL, now that's what I want to hear. Headed there in late Feb myself. I'll come back to you Ippy to fine tune my itinerary. I've already bookmarked all your previous posts on this subject.

I just saw your S. Korea post, sounds like we have the same trip on mind. Korea for 4 days and Japan for 13 days is my itinerary. How random! I can help you out with Korea, sounds like you might need some help, PM me.
