The "Back in the Day" thread

 

Amen.  I was just getting my buddies to understand the deals they offered here.....then the change over.  I miss $7 for my dryride bottoms, $40 for some Recon boots or Ride bindings, $20 for some nice burton gloves.

 

Another thing I miss from back in the day is real winter.  In the midwest we used to get dumped on every winter.....now it's more like a really long fall/spring mash that barely is winter.

I wish I was older then and had a job so I could have bought a lot more gear cheap.

 

That's a pretty broad, and completely inaccurate statement.  I fully understand those great discounts were the reason for Sierra's downfall, and even in the height of those discounts questioned how long a company could sustain with such a business model.

 

Having good memories of getting great deals in no way makes people unintelligent to the ways of the business world, and it's pretty presumptuous on your part to imply as much.

 

This thread is nothing more than (most) people reminiscing about the good deals they may have gotten, not a rally cry for days gone by.  Get off your high horse.

 

I remember reading somewhere a rant from a shop owner that absolutely railed against SS; but in my mind I just kept thinking "dude, I will go to somewhere else on the interwebs to save a single freekin' picture of George Washington."  So if price is the same, you have to sweeten the deal somehow.

Perhaps I should have phrased it differently and not pointed the finger at every one, but rather the specific people who "inspired" my post.  My bad.  I am not on a high horse, but otherwise I say fair enough to your reply.

Anyway, I guess I just think most people are completely out of touch on how this all really works.  Maybe in a less-harsh way than I implied, but still.  A lot of these people are simply complaining about discounts being gone and begging for them back, without understanding what it did and what it does to the industry.

a lot of the time it takes someone/a company/whoever a while to act upon what you'd assume to be their normal actions.  sierra started "acting up," but they were still placing huge orders which burton can't complain about.  over time, the situation got to a point where a decision had to be made, and i'm sure burton had been discussing it for some time before the hammer came down.  a few other companies were in the same boat and pulled out from sierra along with the B.  ultimately the decision was made because while sierra placed huge orders, the way they sold said orders was affecting the ability of every other shop to make sales, and overall, burton ended up losing on the deal, hence stopping it from happening any further.

that being said, while i am an "industry insider" as they say, and have direct experience with it, i am not a true insider for this specific situation, so don't take every little thing i say as factual.
