I have a trip coming up to Tahoe, and want to know where some good places to board in March are. And if there is another place close to there that is amazing, I may make the drive as well for better snow.

Anywhere in Tahoe in March will be good. Are you familiar with where the resorts are? Check this out

Robnezz23's map is awesome. I have to say Squaw is my favorite resort (so much varied terrain and more park features every season), followed closely by Northstar (coolest vibe IMO) and Kirkwood. If you prefer park-heavy days, Boreal has amazing park features with really reasonable lift ticket prices-and on Fridays, if you're a student/military you can get an all day tix for $20-25 I think. Diamond peak and Donner ski ranch are also really inexpensive, but like Boreal they are smaller resorts.

"Good places to board" is kinda vague, what are you looking for? Best beginner terrain? Best park? Cheapest? I don't think anyone agrees what the best resort is. I love the mountain at Northstar (good steeps, great tree runs, lots of space) but I hate dealing with the parking, shuttles, dooshy people and it's freaking expensive.
That map robnezz posted is really helpful. We should put together a "Guide to Tahoe resorts" thread, with the map and our ratings for each one so we don't have 25 of these every season. Somebody should get on that. but not me. |

Depending on what you consider "close", Mammoth is worth a trip if you can make it. |

Bunch of good ski resorts around Tahoe. You can't go wrong with the big resorts like Heavenly, Kirkwood, Squaw/Alpine Meadows, and Northstar. A lot of people also like Sierra-at-Tahoe and Sugar Bow l (which are mid-sized). Some smaller ones can also be considered like Diamond Peak and Boreal and Homewood. Soda Springs and Donner are going to be too small unless it's your 1st time. Not sure about Mt. Rose.

It seems to me that there is too many to choose from.
The only problem with big resorts is the crowd unless the resort is insanely huge, which is why I do prefer smaller resorts plus they're usually cheaper.

Both Heavenly and Kirkwood would fit in the "insanely huge" category. Maybe Squaw too, but I haven't been there.

Was at Alpine Presidents Day right at opening (usually never ride Holidays ) Sat this past season lines were 1/2 hr by 11 am and then went over to Squaw and rode straight up to the lift all day afterwards . They can handle a huge crowd better with more lifts

I think the best resorts to go to are Squaw, Heavenly, Sierra-At-Tahoe, or Northstar. Northstar has the best snowboard terrain park.

don't know your skill/exp level, but being you live in florida and your closest mtn is 10 hrs away in north carolina... squaw is probably way out of your league. Yeah, it's beautiful to look at the towering, ridiculously steep advanced terrain, but not sure if that's going to be worth $100 a day (+transpo) for you.
If you insist, stay in Reno and take the free shuttle to and from squaw...if anything like me, you're probably going to sleep all the way back to the hotel. There's also free shuttles to many of the other north tahoe resorts (you still should reserve a seat). Heavenly basically has everything. I always recommend first timers go there for the most fun/all inclusive Tahoe experience. |

Well, Im no expert, but I have been to Jackson Hole, Mammoth, Keystone, and Loveland, and even some hill in PA. I have been to NC a couple times, but my first time was in JH, WY so I will never go back to NC!

If you are gonna be riding Tahoe, you have got to visit one of those resort that is lakeside! Heavenly is a very decent resort and the view of Tahoe Tahoe is just breathtaking! You not skip that if you don't have many opportunity to go to Tahoe. I have been to several resorts in the Tahoe area:
Heavenly Squaw Sierra-at-Tahoe I actually liked Heavenly the most. Squaw was alright, but it didn't really impressed me that much. I liked Stevens Pass and White Pass up in Washington better than Squaw. |

seem to recall the shuttle was about 45 min to squaw from reno, each way. It stops at all the big casinos/hotels.

Mid-March is generally pretty optimal for Tahoe.
If you're set on staying on the South Shore, I think there's a shuttle up to Sierra from South Lake, and if you have your own transportation, you can also go to Kirkwood. It's out of the way a bit, but higher elevation, and a pretty good variety of terrain. There are probably also enough drivers going that direction that you might be able to hitch a ride there. |

^^Usually Tahoe ski resorts don't close until late April/early May, so it would'nt be too late to go to Heavenly.
The weather in the spring is really nice. It's sunny and warm. |

Here's my thing guys, I'm heading to Tahoe January 12-19th, heard Tahoe doesn't usually get hit too hard that month unfortunately but it's okay.
I ride a ton of park east coast but I certainly don't go west for that. I love trees, don't mind hiking and enjoy big mountain stuff. I have a 1 day lift at Squaw. Then I can pick and choose 4 days as I please at Heavenly (we'll be staying at the resort), Northstar and Kirkwood. I'm also considering this on my off day. http://www.sierraattahoe.com/mountain/huckleberry-gates/backcountry-tours For $80, you really can't beat it. |

Well, we actually just stayed at Heavenly all 4 days....not a bad way to spend the trip! I went to the Cali side once, but it was more crowded.
