and there will be start wars VII in 2015.

Media giant Disney has purchased movie and TV production house Lucasfilm for $4.05B in cash and stock. Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga. Lucasfilm founder George Lucas will act as a creative consultant for the next film.

Disney plans to release a Star Wars film every one to three years from 2015 on. Disney says that the three most recent Star Wars films would have averaged about $1.5 billion in today’s box office dollars, adjusted for inflation.

Maybe it's their attempt at getting the younger youths to get into Star Wars.

I wonder if georgie is starting to realize everything that he did to kill what was originally so great about episodes iv, v, & vi.

If you get a spare hour or so, check out this review by the guys at RedLetterMedia (spelling?).

This is part 1 of 7.  The review is actually nearly as long as the movie, but I lol'd so many times... totally worth it.

Meh, it's too good a franchise to just bury and leave for dead.  All us old folks will always have the originals, hopefully they make the newer movies so that my little guys will grow up loving star wars like I did, and not because of the cartoon.

this is why i hate Disney always buying up everything and turning good things into shit under a period of a decade by far one of the worst moves in entertainment history deeply oppose to this bad decision made by star wars.

I actually think this is great news as it will mean more movies and less of crazy Lucas controlling everything down to the 9th degree.  He sure didn't help the franchise lately either.

Supposedly this also opens up Indiana Jones as well.

Yeah I dont think It will be that bad like CoMtnRider said, the originals will always be around. I hope they don't do remakes though. That would be dumb.

It would be interesting to see how Disney will change Star Wars but they're probably going to make the series have a happy ending and all that typical Disney stuff. :/

4, 5 & 6 are all time.

1, 2 & 3 went dowhill, Jar Jar is the worst character in the history of man kind...

Not holding much hope for Disney to improve things at all.

This is such sad news. With how bad the second 3 were... I can only imagine what will happen with Disney influence. This series is about to become absolutely butchered. Im assuming the main character will be Jar Jar Binks

Exactly, the franchise has already been tarnished.  I'm all for it personally.  George Lucas is only going to be there as a creative consultant, so maybe they won't suck.

We all know it's about money in the end, and I'm sure the new movies will make plenty of it. I do agree with several of you that I want generations to come to at least KNOW what star wars is. I don't like making a reference to Coyote and Roadrunner and kids give me a blank stare haha.

They do not need to make new Star Wars movies to get kids interested in the franchise, my kids (9 and 7) have watched the 6 movies and have their own opinions on which are their favorites and which movies were turds.

I'm curious to know where Disney plans on taking us in Episode 7.  What else is there to do?  Death Star II has been destroyed, Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine are dead, Han and Leia get it on, what can possible follow?

I would be very surprised if the new movie even follows Luke, Han, Leia since the actors are so old now.  The SW universe is huge, they could do something pretty cool without any of those characters.  I'm just happy that GL isn't in charge after what he did with the prequels, especially Ep1.

I don't see this as a bad thing at all.  From what I've read there is a treatment out there for the last three films.  Just a rough outline.  Luke, Lea, and Han are old, so I could see that part being fine.  I don't think they are the principal characters either.

Anyway, Disney bought Marvel and then let Marvel run with it, backing their efforts.  Worked out pretty well for Disney.  I imagine much of the same here.  Getting a quality writer to flesh out the story and a director with Star Wars sensibility are the two main things that have to happen.  Everything else should fall into place if they do and the Mouse provides the finances needed to pull it off.

Holy crap balls! this is some great info to open my day to. At least the series isn't going to die out with the prequels. I am a huuuuuuge stars wars nerd and I was always hoping they wound make some more movies that had a completely new take and cast. That would be best i believe, for the story to go to a new timeline.

In Star Wars Canon, episode VII is when Jacen Solo (Hahn and Leah's son) learns the ways of the force... and eventually has to fight Uncle Luke Skywalker!! Skywalker totally gets seduced by the dark side.

Also, just because the emporer is gone, doesn't mean Vader didn't have another apprentise?  That could be a good catalist for good vs evil.  I don't think the Empire just stopped working when a few capital ships went down at Endor.  They had thousands of star destroyers alone by that time.  And a battle group of three of them is enough to keep most any star system in line... let alone thousands of them!

/ oh please let this turn into a SW Canon Geek thread!!

But most star wars fans know what happens with all of the after episode 6 stuff. Palpatine Clone, Thrawn, Yuuzhan vong, Darth Caedus (Jacen Solo), then the lost tribe of the sith. It needs to get away from the typical Skywalker and Solo families and thier adventures that people can already read about in books.

Ummm hate to break it to you but the books are not canon.  They are expanded universe stories.  Could they figure into a storyline? Sure.  Are the movies beholden to it?  Not at all.

I heard about this news yesterday too. and 4.05Billion? That is a lot of money, it would last me a few life times living the way I'm living even with a few increases in my standard of living.
Just hoping Disney doesn't butcher Star Wars but so far they've been pumping out a few movies from other acquisitions and its been pretty good, not great and a block buster but entertaining enough.

Sad to see. Filming should have stopped after the original trilogy (4,5,6) IMO, but Disney folk's have got to eat, too. It was a huge investment, but I'm guessing Disney will make that money back in under 3 movies with all the products and marketing Disney has wordwide. I wonder what George Lucas is doing today?

There may be a Disney Star Wars ride in the future. Coming to a coast near you.

On a Tuesday conference call, the company's executives began mapping out Lucasfilm's future. Disney will, for one, make more "Star Wars" movies. Following one slated for release in 2015, the company said "more feature films [are] expected to continue the 'Star Wars' saga and grow the franchise well into the future." It will also find ways to use "Star Wars" throughout its businesses, including theme parks, consumer products, television and so on. "I've always believed that 'Star Wars' could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime," George Lucas said in a statement. "I'm confident 'Star Wars' will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come."

After pondering the topic, I thought of something that could be awesome. Maybe this will prevent George Lucas from butchering the original films any further. The thought of Hayden Christansen, or however its spelled, added into ROTJ makes me want to vomit. For shame George Lucas! For Shame!

I don't think many people knew this, Disney bought out marvel studios and produced 'Avengers', a big hit movie. No one complained about that. Like killclimbz said, disney just let marvel studios do their thing.
I think the same will happen with the star wars. Let lucasfilms do the work, back them up and pump the money to them.

real smart how disney is doing things at the moment. By buying these big studios/franchise all they have to do is find good script writers and directors. All the story/plot lines are there for them. No real work needed. Plus george lucas was milking it anyway, the only real thing they brought out since the movies was 'the clone wars' animation.

I land in the camp that is optimistic about this.  I find I like the way Disney handles most of the properties they buy.  Better them than inept companies like TimeWarner or Viacom.

I honestly don't believe that Disney will ruin SW. Of course everything is based around money, if there is money to be made companies will keep it up until it's dry (i.e. Call of Duty franchise or most popular game/movie titles). I think they can only improve it from the last three. IMHO they will not make it a cartoon or ruin it, but in 3 years if they do someone can jump back on the forum and tell me I'm wrong.

ON ANOTHER HAND, lucas won't be at the helm of the next movie...hopefully, so we might be looking at a good re-imagining of the entire series AS WELL AS the tone we THOUGHT it should've been (don't forget who made jar-jar)

ALSO, lucas is donating that money so that means the star wars movies have done more good than harm...including the prequels
