They did a segment on the TV show 'How it's Made' on the process of putting together a snowboard. It's on netflix streaming. It looked like a lot of work with the industrial machines in the Burton factory. I think it would be much more difficult and time consuming doing this on your own, but I also don't think it would really feel like work. Kinda like how waxing/tuning my boards doesn't feel like work.

My friend and I were thinking about making one. His dad does a lot of construction and woodwork but I am not sure if he has the right tools. My uncle works at a lumber yard and he can cut me wood pretty much to whatever thickness I need. We saw somewhere online that poplar is a good wood.

I thought it would be really fun and super cool to make your own board but it is just impractical. The cost is a lot higher than just buying a nice board that will work.
You need to have a full work shop. I was pricing it about $700-1000 for the first board. If you want to do it, get a few friends who also want to make a board. My guess is about 3 boards you need to get it a usable.

if you want a custom board for the fact that you get to decide what you want and how it looks, there are a few companies out there that do great work, like team 8. the prices are within the range of normal snowboard retail. cheaper than DIY when you factor in all the costs of parts, tools, and labor...

you don't need big machines to do it. if you are crafty you can make it happen. for laminating the layers, there are vacuum bags instead of presses. the rest is just cutting, drilling, etc.. you just have to be good with your hands and a few basic tools for the most part. there are also places to buy stock snowboard parts.. inserts, edges, fiberglass, ptex for the base, topsheet material, etc.
the hard part is knowing how your design/material layup is going to turn out as far as the flex/etc of the board. different fiberglass and resins yield different flexes, different sidecuts affect how it turns, so on and so forth.

The problem with making your own board is that you need a bunch of machinery to make it, which is expensive (unless you do some old burton/snurfer design). If someone goes as far as to get all the stuff to do it right they're probably making more than just a board.
From what I remember all the equpment for a turnkey board making operation is about 20k. Doubt too many people here have actually gotten the chance to make there own board.
Hit up Doug on the Thrive page or give a shout to the guys at Marhar (out of MI), they're doing it and doing it well. In the meantime do a youtube search for making a board, I know there's something out there about the subject.

I was wondering if anyone on here has every made a snowboard from scratch. If so, how did you do it? How did it perform?
