Hey guys,
I'm wanting to meet up with a friend in Denver who lives in Florida. I have a snowboard/ board bag, etc. ... can I take it as checked luggage? I'd be flying United I'm thinking. Neither of us are from there so how do you suggest we get to the mountain, hotel, etc. when we get there. Rent a car? Is there a shuttle? etc. Let me know your thoughts! Thanks! P.S. The trip will be sometime in December |

I'd fly Southwest. But if you already flying United it should be okay as well. I do this every year so here's what I do.
1. Fly to Denver 2. Rent a car with folding rear seat (for snowboards to fit). if more than 3 friends, get an small sized SUV. We don't go on shuttles because we want a car to ourselves, nightlife, etc. We had a Ford Fusion one time and it wasn't even an issue for us getting up the mountain. 3. Stay at hotels in Silverthorne or Dillon (small group and assuming you're going to the nearby resorts ~15 minutes away) or Rent in the resort's village (cabin, joint rooms, condos with kitchen) with big group (8+). Silverthorne or Dillon has a Walmart, stock up on supplies there. 4. If you have friends that need Ski or Snowboard rentals, rent at Silverthorne or Dillon because it's cheaper. Also, buy your lift tickets there or buy online. Don't buy at the resort. |

Upon reading what I wrote I failed to mention that if you plan this on a tight schedule, make sure you have at least an extra hour at the airport when you land. Waiting for your luggage is not a big deal but waiting for your gear (snowboard/skis) will take a lot of time. LOL
Our first time flying we landed in Denver around 5PM. By the time we got to the resort the front desk to our condo was closed so we had to drive back in town looking for the main office (which was also closed) luckily they have this key box outside the office with our keys hanging there. Just trying to save you a couple hours of frustration if you have a big party with multiple cars following you. |

Any suggestions on which resort to hit up...? Any specific clubs, etc?
Price is somewhat of an issue with a few people coming on the trip so to be fair, nothing too insane for them..? Thanks for the suggestions so far!! I can't fly southwest because of the fact that I live in Williston, ND & the closest place they fly out of is Minneapolis, MN..? |

If you have just a few people, I would stay in Silverthorne. A few resorts to choose from are: A Basin, Copper Mt, Keystone, Vail, Winter Park, etc and is about 15 minutes away too. I usually go with Copper or Keystone because it's big and wide. Lots of exploring.
There's a few bars in Silverthorne but I think Dillon (2 miles away) got a better variety, even their own brewery. Check them out! If you really want a nice time at night, about 30 minutes away is A Basin's town. People are all over the place and there's so many bars and restaurants (a long strip of them). EDIT: we didn't have energy for clubs so we usually hit up bars and hang out. |

This may not be that helpful for your situation but it may help others. If you are gonna be staying at a hotel (I'm not sure how it would work if you are staying at a condo), you can ship your gear in advance and have the hotel hold on to it until you check in. I know it doesn't sound like it makes any sense, but if you really think about all the cost and logistics, it actually does. Then you can ship it back home once you are done with your trip. Not everyone has a snowboard bag, so you have to account for the fact that people would have to purchase a board bag just for the trip. Lets be honest too, most of us do not make a snowboarding trip that requires flying each and every year. I have several snowboard bags that rearly use. If you have a group of more than 3 and flying with an airline that charge of checked baggage, it really adds up. This is when it make more sense for people to remove their bindings and ship their board together in 1 box or even with a seperate box with their boots and bindings too. Considering the price of purchasing a board bag that would fit all of 1 person's gear multiply by the number of people in your group, it can be pretty expensive. Group of 4: Checked Bags: 4 board bags x $50 = $200 4 Checked bags x ~$40 (RT) = $160 UPS Ground Quote (From southern California to Denver, Colorado): ~$45 each way = $90 (for shipping both ways) Estimate transit days: 3 L: 63" (160 cm) W: 18" H: 6" (Box that can probably fit around 6 snowboard without bindings) Weight: 25 lbs You guys can do the math. Also, in case of you cancelling the trip. Hotels are usually very helpful in shipping the stuff back to you at your expense (I work in the industry). But cancelling the trip 1 before it happens is typically very unlikely. Just another option for any who is thinking of taking a skiing/snowboarding trip.

Sometime in early December I plan on flying to Portland, OR to go snowboarding with a few friends also.
Not so sure about shipping the stuff as I don't honestly know which mountain we'll be headed to during the week I'll be there. Suggestion on that? |
