Like most girls when we are looking for new years plans or vacations she's looking to somewhere warm or a big city. This year I'm changing that, she does enjoy occasional boarding just not good at it. I'm getting her a board for Christmas. Which boards are considered beginner and are very forgiving? I have a lot of patience but I think she would benefit tremendously from lessons, has anyone been part of one and is it helpful? thanks in advance.

Also is there good protection from tail bone injuries. I seen some padded pants, might just strap a pillow to her but...think shed mineÉ

Is a lot easier for both of u if ur gf takes a lesson.
If ur lucky, Ross or Marshall have Nike combat football tights that have tailbone and hip protection pads for half da price. Can't go wrong with da Sierra set up for her. |

what ldid was give my girl the basic of how to break and how boarding works, made her life easier with the lessons if you ask me. They dont care if all she does is sit there all day so..

Most resorts do a 2 hour to half day lesson... I took one at bromley that was a two day lesson for 80 bucks. Most come with a free lift ticket for the day as well... Good luck women are stubborn... I hope you can get her to learn... I cant even get my girl on the mountain...

My fiance wears a pro-tec butt pad. It's like tights but with enough padding on the side hip, butt, and especially on the tail bone location. I got it from sports chalet. Maybe sports authority might have it too. |

I highly recommend the Sierra V-Spot! My gf's first board and she loves it. Plus the graphic is nice and girly, but still got some edginess to it. It's a reverse camber so it's very forgiving when it comes to learning how to carve. Flex is soft and playful. If she's super new, perhaps going one size down might be something to consider for easier turns. Plus the current price is quite affordable.

This board went as low as $100 back in the SS days with the Staff Picks sales... got myself my Stunt at the same time. My gf got hers when it was at 70% off... doubt we'll see these prices again though. |

There are many Roxy, Head, Rossignol, Ride, Flow, Capita, and Rome boards that are cheaper than the V-Spot. And look better. In my opinion anyway. Depends on what your girlfriend likes.
I'd be super psyched if I got this Roxy Ollie Pop BTX as a beginner board for Christmas. Other possible options include: Capita Saturnia, DC Biddy, Ride Rapture, or Flow Venus. I don't know if the recommendations above are in your girlfriend's size, but if they are, they'd be very nice choices. As for lessons. I took a week-long course. We had classes every morning for a couple of hours. It was well worth it. It helps having someone you don't know teach you. Less arguing. Plus you get to have a little bit of time to yourself where you get to ride full on, then you won't be unhappy when you have to hit the bunny slopes with your girlfriend afterward. |

Capita Space Metal Fantasy. Reverse camber and pretty soft. Perfect for somebody who's gonna be out there with you but not super "into it". My wife has one, she loves it. FK is really forgiving.

My recommendations:
1) Rent and put her in a lesson first. She doesn't want to learn from you and it will become a fight. Put her in a lesson where she can be embarrassed and fall out of your sight and then ride with her after the lesson. It will make for a much more enjoyable experience. 2) Make sure she rides two days in a row. She will be much better longterm if she can immediately build upon what she learned in her lesson. 3) If she likes it, get her good equipment. If you skimp out, you'll end up having to upgrade her gear anyway. It's cheaper to buy decent stuff the first time instead of getting cheap stuff and buying better stuff later anyway. 4) Keep going. The more she goes, the better she'll get and the more fun she'll have. It took a full season of me dragging my wife to the mountain before she started making reservations for us and was dying to ride every weekend. |

Don't underestimate how good she'll do. My wife can do inverted aerials now.
If you think she'll suck, she will. If you encourage her, she can do anything.

lol its so true the better they look the more they want to do it. She is 5'6" and weighs about 125, she is a personal trainer and is ridiculously fit. we are going to be riding mostly groomed and maybe getting into some pow I was looking at a 146-149 board, but I have seen some suggestions on going 152. would that be too large for her to learn on?

Safest to just aim at the middle of each length/weight range. I don't think 5'6" is that tall to have her go a little longer on the board. My gf is 5'5" 110lbs and she rides a 142 V-Spot.
Given her physically inclined attributes, she'll probably do quite well with whatever you give her. The most tiring part of learning is getting up from falling but with her conditioning, her first days would most likely be very productive. barnyard is right, encourage her and she'll surprise you with how good she can keep up. But it's true, the graphic on the board weighs quite a bit with their decision, so definitely show her to get her approval before you buy it.

i agree. i think 152cm is a little too long.
and if the board is for a beginner, i think she will be more interested in the graphic rather than anything else. she probably can change to a better board later. for now, i think cheap & pretty will do

I'm bout her size n 147 is a great all round size for me. 142 might be a bit too small for her. She can ride a 142 but 147 will be more stable as she picks up speed n def. way better in pow. N u said she pretty fit so a 147 will be a better option because she's probably stronger than an avg. girl. Sh*t she might be in better shape than my lazy a...

Other folks have already made my points -- lessons are well worth it, so you don't have relationship baggage messing up the teaching and learning; and if possible, a series of two or three lessons over a weekend is best. Plus lots of practice time.
Let us know how it goes, MossMan. Best of luck, and happy shredding together! |
