I currently have a 2008 burton bullet. It is my first board and is a little beat up. I'm thinking of getting a new board. I only board fresh snow once a year and for the most part I board in Wisconsin and Illinois. I like the bullet but I am looking for something a lighter. I'm a casual boarder no parks or jumps. Any suggestions?

Are you looking to stick with Burton or open to other options? What sort of price range are you working with as well? It'd be good to know what your next goal is in terms of progression in your riding. Besides something lighter (which most new boards are) what other shortcomings did you find with the Bullet?

I'd like to keep the price under 400$. I do love burton boards. I like to keep the equipment all the same. And I picked up burton boots and bindings at rei. I'm looking for something maybe easier to control. The bullet was great. I'm thinking maybe I went to big for my first board. I got a 161 and I'm 5'9".

Definately went big... maybe a 155 to 157... Its hard to say what to get. Personally mixing gear isnt a crime lol... My next purchase is going to be a ride manic look into it... its a good intermediate to beginner stick.

Board size depends on your weight. It's your mass that manipulates your board, not how tall you stand upright on flat ground.
If you want to stick to Burton, I can't offer much advice. I don't know their late products too well, although they are quite a bit more expensive than they used to be. If anything, if you're a do whatever guy, I'd suggest a soft-medium board, in the 151 to 155 range, as most companies have stretched out the effective edge on their freestyle lines allowing you to reduce the length slightly. I'm suggesting a freestyle board because, in most cases, they are deliberately lightened up whether by tapering the core, blunting the tips, or simply by area/material reduction. Typically, they're also quite easy to ride, fitting in with your ride style.

just in general, l really like ride boards, it does feel slightly heavier, but the quality feels like it last a lifetime

You should look into a K2. I have always loved the brand. They are a classic ski company that made its way over to snowboarding and makes great boards. I had ridden one but do not own one myself.
I checked out some prices and they are a bit pricey but like i said, they get great reviews and they have great all-mountain boards. |
