This site is pretty sweet: http://opensnow.com
It has a local expert from different regions of the country predicting snow fall for the region. Each guy on the site lives to predict snow fall. Of course it is the weather so no matter it is hard to predict but these guys give it everything they have so digging the new site. tahoeweatherdiscussion is now closed and has moved to this site. You can customize a dashboard which will show you predicted snowfall for a wide slew of mountains so you can try to chase the pow in your local region and beyond if you wish. Pretty sweet. |

BA rocks, hopefully he's able to make a couple bucks off this venture, I have been glued to tahoeweatherdiscussion for a couple years now. More importantly, he's predicting pretty massive totals by Xmas !!!

Thanks, I particularly like the U.S. map that shows which states have not even a small snow hill. Those are stated I could never live in.

Saw this when I went to TahoeWeatherDiscussion yesterday, really cool site. Sad the mid atlantic only need a 3x a week update and it's usually bleak. But it's definitely useful and a nice site.

I've been subscribing to Joel's newsletter for a few years. He does the Colorado forecast. He's much more accurate than most of the other weather sites.

They're predicting a 10 day dry spell for Tahoe after this storm. Hoping desperately that dryspell ends by the time I get there on Jan 12th.
It'll still be rad either way, but I'd love some pow pow.

Nice find!
Now, I'm not going to blame them for throwing up the 28% open number at my mountain... but dang... that really looks pathetic now.

haha, Joel has a great site going. He is optimistic about all conditions and tries to give people the insight they need without extra nonsense. Doesn't give a weather prediction that favors resorts, just tells it like it is.
Common theme he puts out, we don't have a clue about the exact weather until it's almost here. So trust the 2-3 day forecast, look at anything else as trends. opensnow is the best site. He's doing great getting the word out.

The reality is you cant even trust the 2-3 day forecast. So many times the actual weather turns out different than what was predicted even in the short term. But they do a solid job of forecasting and to give you a general idea of what may or may not be on tap.
Great source.

hmm, am i missing something? does the site do more than just provide historical snowfall data for a particular region and the forecast for the upcoming days? It's nice to have all the snow info consolidated on one page though

I would say the main thing is that the forecasters on this site live for snow forecasting so as difficult of a job as it is they seem to do about as good as you can do. The site has other cool features like the dashboard. You can put all your favorite resorts on it and then it will forecast specific snowfall predictions for each resort. I have all three resorts that I have season passes to Tahoe on it so it is a convenient way to see which mountain is predicted to have the most snowfall in the upcoming days. Tahoe is like that where different mountains may see a fairly big discrepancy in snowfall depending on how the individual storm is coming together. I also put a couple Utah mountains on there cuz I have a friend who lives there and I like to see what is happening in his world.

I'm assuming you were looking location specific. The goal of the snow totals is to try and hit the range, but depending on where you ride...you may get it you may not. No weather prediction will get that perfect with the data and models they have available today.
For example, Vail and Breck may each get 10" and Copper may get 5". Just the way it works, even though Copper is directly between them both. I have also seen where Copper gets 8" and Vail and Breck only received 3". |
