Topic: Edge pulled away from board, help with fixPosted: Dec/31/2012 at 1:11pm |

Hey guys went riding this weekend and noticed a little part of my edge started to separate from the board, and it looks like the base layer has started to delam. The edge has been cracked for a while but I never had a problem with it. This is my park board and it sees alot of abuse. Id just like to fix it so it doesnt get any worse.
Heres some pictures. ![]() ![]() I was going to just fill it with epoxy and clamp the edge back into the board and clamp the plys back together. Now can I just use any epoxy? Its a reverse camber board and it will see a good amount of flex so I dont want the epoxy to just crack right away. What do you think? |

You may have gotten some water in there (hense the "pulling") You'll want that board to be rediculously dry before you epoxy that up. I reccomend marine grade epoxy as it resists water.
If you don't want a bang up job, you may get away with applying epoxy liberally (get nice and deep under there), and clamping it all together nice and tight. Wait for it to dry, sand the extra epoxy down, wax, and ride.
Looks like it's under your toe side binding? That may help/harm you because it gets a lot of hits, but it may be a little less likely to flex, so mas o menos on that one.

That's the exact same spot I ripped my base on as well a few years back. My guess is that the extra weight of your body really puts pressure on that spot if you hit a rail or rock or whatever.

It's stupid to put a seam there. Don't they usually put them near the nose and tail of the board?
On my board, there was some edge seperation and some big gaps so I just used Loctite superglue on the small gaps but I clamped the edge in place first before I put the glue. I did use epoxy on the big gaps though, but there was actually gaps between pieces of the edge

Make sure you mix the epoxy well first and I use wax paper to keep the epoxy from sticking to anything else like the clamps.
the hard parts is you will probably want to put pressure down and in at the same time for best results.

clamp it between a couple of blocks.. like 2x4 to help with the wider pressure down.
I was wondering if there was a seam there or it just cracked. also looks like you might need to press in the edge too..GL with that man, maybe some after pictures when you've done it? or process pics too lol

he said the edge was cracked. one thing to keep in mind is that depending on the type of board you have, the curve might be right where that crack is. if the epoxy doesnt hold, you can take it to rei or something and they can remove the edge and weld in a new piece. i had a core shot near an edge and they fixed both for me.

it's a fairly in depth repair, the kind I usually don't actually charge for at the shop unless you look like you're rich or give off the air of being a douche bag. What you need to do is cut away that section of base like in a shape kinda like this (l the straight line being your edge and then push your edge back into place and put a very small screw in to keep it in place and then either do a base patch (put a new section of base in or fill it with p tex) I'd recommend using black ptex string or ribbon and a soldering iron if you choose the p tex option, use 24 hour epoxy if you do the base patch might be a good idea to epoxy it as well as screw it in place, good luck. If you happen to be in the tahoe area I can do the repair for you, just pm me.

Same thing happened to my board two years ago. The edge cracked but i just left it alone. Surprisingly it didnt really affect my riding like i thought even after a good five inch section completely broke off. I just use it for urban now or for crappy days on the mountain and its still fine.

Hey that's a good idea with the wax paper! I didn't think of that I just knocked the stuck blocks off with a hammer lol

looks good bro. I just fixed my girlfriends board. the whole tail was all separated and I actually only used crazy glue. I wish I saw this thread before I did it. Looks a lot better than mine does. Of course, mine was pretty messed up and took a lot to fix. Anyways, looks good!

Thanks for the help guys. Left it clamped for about 24hrs, then just lightly sanded away the excess epoxy. Happy how it turned out and hopefully it holds up.

Well after riding on it a couple of times the epoxy sort of let go. Its in such a high flex area Im not really surprised. The edge is still holding to the board, its not as bad as before, but the base plys are starting to separate again. Oh well, Ive been looking at new boards anyways.

I'm wondering if there's a sort of softer more flexible adhesive would work better like silicone but maybe stronger. Can we see pics again?
What are boards usually laminated together with anywayS?
