so looks like the wife and i will be going to jackson hole in february. just curious if anyone on on the board has ever rented snowmobiles and took the sleds off trail into the backcountry out there (or anywhere really). we are looking to do a little off trail riding and definitely want to venture out to look for fresh lines and untapped powder (if the timing is right with snowfall).
any pointers and advice on companies to go with, minimum sled power, trails to hit, places to go and how to handle a sled would be greatly appreciated. been meaning to do some backcountry hiking out in tahoe, but don't have snowshoes just yet.

I personally haven't rented sleds from JH. But when using sleds in the backcountry you need to be much more avy. aware. Sleds are quite heavy and can cause slides easier than you can just skinning/hiking.
You might want to hire a local guide for a day before you venture out. (what I'd do) just my 2 cents...

Yah if you want to go on snowmobiles you should probably do a tour or something with a group. The backcountry around Jackson is no joke and you shouldn't be wandering out there if you have no clue what you are doing. The terrain inbounds at JHMR will be plenty challenging that you shouldn't have to venture OB to find good stuff. Cross your fingers for snow.

thanks for the reality check, and after reading your posts and doing some more research, there does seem to be group sled tour options that take you into the backcountry. we have done group backcountry adventures before and want to get into doing stuff ourselves and though this would be a good entre. to get it straight, i wasn't talking about some t rice, 20 miles out in the middle of nowhere adventure, but more like go on a trail, see a powder field, hit it, back on the trail
i have a few buddies that just went to jackson hole and rented sleds and did it themselves. they did say that they found tons of untapped powder but one of the sleds got stuck and they had to dig out. and they were super unprepared... |

yah lots of stuff can go wrong on sleds and like you said.. if you are unprepared it can get interesting. There's also ALOT of traffic in the bc around jackson.. so if conditions were less than ideal and you ended up somewhere you shouldn't be other groups could end up in some serious trouble. I'm not saying you shouldn't do it but just make sure to research where you are going and know the conditions before heading out.

MT, sound advice. actually just followed up with that sled company and they take group tours in the the BC, but you can't bring your board. it's exclusively a sled tour. so the search continues....

cancel the search! the wife and i rented sleds and hit up the BC area of Togwotee Pass. One of the most exciting, exhilarating and nervous times of my life! We even brought our boards and got 3 BC runs in during our day. I highly suggest anyone do it if you have never done it before. SUPER fun and really affordable in Jackson!

Damn never even thought about taking the sleds for backcountry! Great idea. Some people on my plan home said to not waste time in the national parks, because you cannot leave the main paths. Spend time in the forests and enjoy the open space out there.

sorry it's taken so long to post something. been writing my dissertation and trying to graduate, so you know...got a little distracted. here are some photos of our day 3, sled rentals and togwotee pass. such a great time!
![]() A nice view of how WIDE open the powder fields are! ![]() Another view ![]() there was just SO much fresh snow! i'll load more when i have more time b/c this file loader app on here really sucks. it's been giving me errors left and right and i just don't have time to mess with them right now. sorry guys. consider it a sneak peek. more to come later! |

JB, i'm not going to lie, it wasn't cheap, but in comparison spending $100 on a lift ticket to JHMR, it wasn't that bad. wife paid for everything as an early birthday present. it ended up costing about $175/pp with rentals, gas for sled and car. what can i say i have the best wife ever!

witty, yeah we barely left the sleds. and if you've never handled them before, they can be quite a handful. i ride motorcycles and have ridden jet skis/waverunners before and these take a lot more effort. we ended up hiking up and doing 3 runs in some knee deep powder, which was fun.
promise more pics soon!
