Well if you are riding in very icy conditions, a sharp edge will really make a difference.

Sharp edges make a HUGE difference.
Ski racers wouldn't be able to do what they do without sharp edges and race tuning. They have two edges... you have 1. It'll make a big difference.

A file is less than 10 bucks, I'm sure you can afford that. But yeah, sharp edges are what you need for icy conditions so you can carve.

to echo what other folks have said, file it yourself. the "dakine edge tool" is a cheap and simple side-edge sharpener. i think its like 7 bucks or something and comes with an extra file. for the bottom edge just take the file and make a bevel with tape (look it up online if you dont know what i mean)

i like to keep my edges nice and sharp. I don't worry about them so much on my Gnu (magna-traction for the win), but my Burton and my Atomic, i keep those things nice and sharp.
Although one of my buddies de-tunes his so much, his edges are really just there to hold his core inside. you will probably find a happy medium.

Just a question about riding in park with sharp edges, It's obviously better to detune your edges for it right? Especially for a beginner?
I want to start doing park on my next trip But its in NZ, icy conditions, So should i take 1 tuned and 1 detuned board? |

quick question, i havent really gotten into tuning to much, but i get a lot of chop when changing edges or stopping... is that because mine arent sharp enough? its almost like the board skips across the snow. i just recently started feeling this so im not sure what to think.

Detune it. Think there're 1, 2 and 3 degrees of detunings. Usually 90 degrees. So it'll be 89, 88, and 87. 87 will be the least sharp. I usually use sand paper, or wet sand paper to define the edge slowly till to my likening. AJD13 I dunno how you ride, but since you said you just started to feel this recently, you probably want to sharpen your edge. It might be that your edges is more dull at some parts than other parts of the edge. |

2zz you're wrong a 3 degree side bevel is the sharpest you can go, I wouldn't recommend going with less then a 1 degree side bevel 1 or 2 for a snow board is great 3 is over kill for a base bevel 1 is standard less then that would ride pretty catchy, maybe go to a 2 if you want to ride a lot of park and still keep a sharp edge.

yeah, its definately got some burring to it. its gonna need a tune before wednesday anyhow its super dry on the base ive just been putting it off in my lazyness. i didnt think it would make it chop like that though.

Base bevels have nothing to do with how sharp an edge is, it's just going to affect how quickly an edge fully engages, thus making it feel how "catchy" a board is. Freeride boards will usually come with a 1*. Park Boards usually will come 2*. I think most LTR boards have a 3*. Side bevel is worthless and quite frankly you hardly ever hear of anybody other than racers beveling their sides.

Wait I'm confuse. So my tool has 89 on one side and 88 degrees on the other side. So 88 degrees will be the least sharpest then right? I remember that my local shop offered me a 87 tune for least edginess before but that was a few seasons ago. I might have not remember it correctly.
But one thing that I do remember is that I can hardly tell the difference with different edge tuning while riding. So I haven't sharpen my edges for awhile now. I'm riding with barely any edge now. I like it like this. I need to read the edge and tuning threads again. Lol. |

side bevel is not worthless it's what make you're edge sharp if you file you're base bevel you will just over bevel your edge and make it less effective, and yes I do know what I'm talking about this is what I do for a living.

Sharp edges give you better grip when youre boarding. It prevents you from slipping and losing your edge hold especially on hard-packed snow/ice which could be pretty dangerous especially if youre riding at high speed..
