Are mittens better than gloves in terms of strapping in and warmth? i have pipe gloves, and can basically do anything with them, but they get wet and cold pretty fast and i dont like to go into the lodge much. i want to get some mittens but only if they're worth it. are they?

Mittens are definitely better for warmth.

it's a preference thing. you can also get gloves far more substantial than pipe gloves that will take care of your cold/wet issues, if you prefer to have separate fingers. I prefer mittens. warmer, more comfortable for me, and I like the aesthetic more too. I lose zero dexterity with them for strapping in and all that. in fact, the last time I used gloves, I liked them less in that respect. most people would find that statement to be backwards.

A nice compromise is a trigger finger mitten, such as the POW Tanto Mitt:
http://powgloves.com/shop/tanto-trigger/ I think Dakine, Grenade and a few others make a similar mitten. But if you're "broke as a joke" these may be out of your price range. I have the POW Stealth Mitt GTX and my hands never get cold. Also, I have no problems strapping in and unstrapping. |

I got the burton pyro gloves and they keep me pretty warm and its pretty water proof. I havent really got a chance to compare it to mittens yet though. I was using the pyro gloves in 10 degree weather lol.

mittens are warmer, but l do feel like its harder to move. Pipe gloves are really not good gloves if you ask me

I've always wanted to try out the mitts with a trigger finger. I've only used 5 finger gloves and my fingers usually end up getting cold.

I have the celtek trigger mittens and they keep my fingers pretty warm. I had mittens before but I felt like the dexterity was limited. This is a nice happy compromise since it keeps the 3 fingers that I barely use warm while freeing up the fingers I do need. OP...I think going from pipe gloves to any waterproofed gloves would solve your problem. You don't necessarily need to get mittens since your main issue is waterproofing. |

Yeah, I've been looking at that one but never pulled the trigger on it. I've been wasting money on 5 fingers instead. I guess I'll get it the next time I see it on sale.

There are gloves with fingers that have mitten like covers on the back of the hand that pull over your fingers. I have some waterproof leather Shaun White gloves I got on a TS sale for like $30 that are unbelievably warm and still allow great hand usage.

Agreed with spenser, it's preferential. I prefer mittens. My buddy likes gloves, being that he needs the articulation to use his GoPro. With mittens, I can't even grab my lift pass from the jacket, so I have to ask the lift operator to pull it out to inspect it. But I like mittens. And I like kittens.

I go the mitt route, doesn't help keep my hands warm though. I got hands made of ice.
Doesn't seem like the loss of dexterity really gets in the way much on the hill. Maybe when i need to check the phone but would have to take hands out of gloves as well for that. |

In my opinion, mittens keep your hands warmer and you can put hand warmers in each mitten for extra warmth, but I gloves better because they allow more freedom for your fingers.

I like gloves cause of freedom but is usually bulkier than mittens. Just find out from here that they make mittens with trigger finger, def getting those for my next pair. Mittens are a tad warmer but I never had cold hands in gloves even in below freezing temps. Some gloves comes with removable liners too. Gloves that I had all kept my hands dry and toasty.

i have short fingers and regular size palms, so gloves never fit me worth a hoot. Why don't snowboarding gloves come in "cadet" sizes like golf gloves??
So, i'm a mitten loyalist. Burton Bakers for 3 seasons now. Super comfy, and a surprising amount of agility for strapping in and such.
