i am prepping all my gear for my upcoming trip, and one of the items is a newer to me 686 smarty jacket, bought it from a member here a year or so ago. I have been looking over the jacket and there seem to be about 50 pockets, and about a dozen hooks, ropes, clasps, eyelets...
For the life of me can't really figure out what most of the stuff would be used for. i will have a camalback that I will have water and snacks in, my phone will be in the chest area (is that the best location?), and that is about it. Also just realized there is a goggle stash pocket on the left chest with a nice microfiber wipe! doubt i will use the pocket, but good to know it is there. |

Everything spenser listed seems reasonable except for the cash.

Phone in chest pocket, glove insert in either hip pocket. My jacket has a hidden skirt mini-pocket that's presumably used for storing marijuana.
Trousers: mini screwdriver, loose change, wallet, car keys. Some of your mystery jacket hooks might be used to anchor it onto snowpants. Others are probably for lift tickets. Can't tell you much about the 'ropes' other than that they're most likely bungee cords for tightening your hood, neck, and waist fits.

Front left chest pocket has my phone.
Inner left chest pocket has my ipod. Front left waist pocket has my lock. Front right waist pocket has my wallet. Right pant pocket has my car key. Left pant pocket has my lip balm. Optional: Front right chest pocket for an extra face mask. Front left/right waist pocket for alternative pipe gloves. Front left waist pocket for a beer. Front right waist pocket for a beer. I'm hesitant to put replacement lenses for my goggles in my jacket in case I fall.
Lastly... pockets are awesome! |

Anyone else notice that Gatorade is the Budweiser of the mtn? I constantly see random empty/half full Gatorade bottles scattered all over the hill. As for the OP, a phone and maybe something edible in a wrapper. |

I suppose I can answer this for realz now, out of boredom
every day: right pocket has my powershot, left pocket has the gopro, and the chest pocket has a hand warmer for cold days when my powershot battery wants to die, ipod, and sometimes my wallet if I figure I might want to buy something to eat up there. if I'm splitboarding, same thing minus the wallet and ipod (having music in the backcountry ruins something for me), but I might also have my gloves and/or balaclava in one of the low hand pockets. as for the actual question, I doubt companies expect you to use all the pockets and features, but they include them in case the individual customer wants them, which is nice. they may also have the same use in mind for two different pockets, but they know people have their preferences as far as where they want to put certain items. clip your keys in a waist pocket or chest pocket? phone goes up high or down low? you pick! hooray!

I really hope the bottle is for the spit. There really isn't much that pisses me off than people that dip, spitting all over the place. And it's usually where everyone straps in at the top. shtooking nasty to get your glove in that shit. |

I wanted to take something non-carbonated that taste great and hydrate me. A small Gatorade bottle is the best! When I was in Wolf Creek two weeks ago, a small bottle was 2 bucks! and it was a the local grocery store! i cringed and bought a pack of 6. I forgot about the zipper pocket with the key ring clip. I click my keys on it ;) |

no matter what I have with me I always make sure pointy items like tools for bindings and such as well as breakables like phones go into my side pockets so I don't fall on them. you usually tend to fall forward or right on your butt so that's why it is better to keep stuff directly out of harms way or from harming you or busting open. also I always like to keep a mini med kit just in case. its just a zip lock bag with bandages, pain killers, tape, and hand warmers.

IN my jacket Ive got lift passes, camera and usually my pocket driver..
ON my jacket theres quite a few pockets, the newest jacket has double closure system of a zip and velcro. The jackets seem to have a large range of big and small pockets... All of thems got snow skirts, I think I prefer snow skirts on jackets than snow skirts on pants.

Dang, you guys carry a ton of stuff in your pockets. I find having stuff in my pockets annoys the heck out of me, so I keep it simple. I keep my iPod in my media pocket and a goggle back in another pocket. Maybe a gopro if I'm feeling up to it.

My jacket usually has my phone, keys, multi-tool, Cliff bar, goggle cloth, facemask/ bandana.
Backup gloves and my wallet go in my pants. It's not a whole ton of stuff, but it's enough to keep going if a minor issue comes up. Once I'm on the mountain, I don't like to stop unless I really have to. |

The Sh!t I carry in my jacket:
Tissues/napkins grainola bar keys phone google bag lip balm sometimes a flatten bottle with liquids in it can't think of anything else.. think that's pretty much it in the jacket.. Ideally I would have to carry nothing! maybe one day I'll try wearing a pack instead..

I leave my wallet in the locked glove compartment and usually bring my keys, phone, pass, credit card, ID, cash, weed, and lock. My pass, ID, visa, and cash are always in the pass pocket of my pants. Phone is in jacket with my herb.
