Has anyone on here had luck with homemade roof racks? if so, what did you use and what are your horror & success stories?

I'm guessing there are more horror stories. Who makes a roof rack at home? Is it even legal to drive with a homemade roof rack?

I've made racks for bikes and kayaks in my pickup, only horror stories are making multiple trips to hardware store.

If you have a factory roof rack running down the length of your car, you can buy 3/4" or 1" tubing, cut to length, and mount horizontally. I suppose you can secure it by using hose clamps to the factory bars. Then you can mount a traditional Yakima or Thule style snowboard rack on. I haven't done this before, nor would I ever do it, but I think it would work.

I use factory base bars but i made my own rack that attaches on top if that. Its made of wood and was based in the design that old school vws use on their racks. I only use it during the summer though. Ill try to post a picture tonight. Only bad part is the wood gets dirty quick from drivng and i have to sand esch piece to clean it properly.

If you're handy I do not see any reason why it wouldn't work.
Personally I am not handy and plunked down the cash for a Thule box and bars.

How much did it cost for the thule box? All in all my add on rack cost about $50 in parts. I think something equivalent would have been twice as much.

^ I spent over $600 on the Thule box, bars and towers. You can easily spend over $1000 depending on what model you get.

I've seen a neighbor of mine use 2x4's... nothing wrong with them.. just heavy and looks funny.
The best roof rack I've seen was made out of old ski's! It was RAD!! |

I would never use home made roof racks.. Thule or Yakima racks are cheap enough.. you can get them used on cl for even less.. just make sure to close them, my friend forgot one time, we ended up picking up boards on the side of the freeway.

I found a board on the side of the freeway once! I saw what car it came off of... they just took off... didn't return. Even waited for half an hour (while taking off chains)

I was going to DIY for the snowboard attachments but turns out it's completely unsafe and not DOT approved,my buddy mention CHP will ticket you if caught ghetto rigging your racks without the proper roof carrier and brackets.best to shell out the money and have it done the right way if you really don't want to loose that expensive equipment.

Still, I would have stopped if that was me. |

Yeah, you're right. No one in their right mind would just leave it if they knew it fell off.
I'm always paranoid to use a board roof rack. No matter how secure I know it is. Last time I had to use one was years ago. |

I've welded a frame before to place in my truck bed for holstering large tools, tool boxes, bicycles, and possibly snowboards if I were inclined to. It only works in the truck because the bed can contain it securely. Based on my experience with making a rig, I strongly recommend that you do not make your own rig for roof mounting. It will be incredibly difficult to fabricate a roof rack assembly, with precision, that will fit securely, remain lightweight as to not crush the roof, and be modular and easy to use. Time and cost of gathering the parts and materials, alone, makes it a pointless endeavour, its illegality altogether notwithstanding if not professionally fabricated nor safe. The best you can do is fabricate a hitch-mounted out of basic mild steel. Use a TIG or an arc welder to weld it. If MIG welding is all you have, do not use flux core wire; use a copper filler metal and paint the joints for weatherproofing. But, again, reliability and the cost of materials make it a lost cause unless a custom-shaped assembly is absolutely required for your vehicle. Just buy a roof rack assembly. Thule sells hitch-mounted racks as well, if that's your flavour, but only to the American market as I recall.

In our case, we didn't notice till another car drove up beside us and pointed up.. that's when our hearts sank, looked at each other and said, did u close the rack?
