Quote LaNieve Quote  Post ReplyReply Direct Link To This Post Topic: HELP! Board warranty
    Posted: Apr/01/2013 at 2:12am
I recently acquired a new custom made snowboard from a handmade snowboard shop in Korea. I picked it up on my trip there and brought it down to New Zealand where I live. I found that every single one of the insert holes are faulty, like theyve been drilled in a little further than they were supposed to when the holes in the topsheet where being made. Screws wont turn properly and fix into the holes at all even without the bindings.
I spent $300 to send it back to them. If they decide that it falls under warranty (which it should), should the company be paying for the shipping back here?
Their warranty info page states that if the damage was not consumer-caused, they would make a new board and pay for the shipping themselves. However they do not state anything about international shipping, since as far as they know they only had Korean consumers in mind at the moment of writing out the warranty information.
Im really not keen on scooping out another 300.. (or more, if they make me a new board and send the first useless one with it) since with $600 bucks, i couldve bought a whole new board..

I would really like them to cover the shipping, but since its not exactly their fault that i live overseas, I dont really know what to do.
Please shoot some advice/opinions this way Smile

have you tried calling or emailing the company directly and asking them? that would be the first thing i would do......

Ive sent the board for inspection, they would not give me an answer about the warranty until the board maker (injured at the moment) can check out whats wrong with it.. I havent directly asked them about the shipping because i know theyd say that they will have to check the board first

im just wondering, since it says on the warranty page that they would cover the return shipping, would I be able to legally use that if they refuse to cover the shipping costs? I am just feeling really quite adverse to the idea of forking $600 out just because they made some mistake in the manufacturing process...

If it says on the warranty that they will cover return shipping then you should definitely be able to use that if it falls under warranty and they refuse to cover the cost.

it really depends on the terms and condition. Best to ask them about it. Wouldn't it have been easier if you brought it to a local shop and fixed the inserts instead?

Steezemisterr ^^ Sweet thanks, I really hope it doesnt have to come to that but itll be good to know that i can do something about it
-

rye ^ the inserts are un-fixable, it is impossible to re-thread them as the top half of the insert threads of all the inserts are damaged. if you re-thread it only the leftover bottom half will be re-threaded properly which gives no safe and stable fix of the bindings to the board, as the screw only manages to turn 1 and half when in normal boards it should turn more than 4 times.
If you wanted to replace the threads, the entire board will have to be ripped apart which i dont even know if its possible as snowboard materials are compressed together. Also, i wont allow any ripping the topsheet off or cutting out the inserts as it reduces the durability and safety of the board

you shouldn't have had to pay shipping to them in the first place if it was really 100% their fault that the board didn't come out right.

Yeah i concur but apparently theyll only pay for the return shipping if it falls under the warranty subject, the consumer has to pay for the shipping to get it to them for inspection... Cry

idk, this may fall under the "throwing good money after bad" situation.  If I thought there was even a chance that I'd have to cover the $300 shipping back to them, I would have thrown the board in the garbage and taken it as an expensive lesson learned.

That was NEVER an option for me, this is a board i won in a design competition (came 1st) and the board was made exactly to my specifications with my design on it tip to tail, ill never throw that kind of board away.. or just give up on it and let them get away with their mistake.

I just paid that $300 thinking bad luck that they made the first of this kind of mistake on MY board... Its just that i really really dont want to pay another $300 cause then it would equal the price of a whole new other board and that is just too much to pay for someone else's mistake.

:: UPDATE ::

I sent my board off to them at the end of March, they fixed the insert holes and sent it back and I got it today
I have no idea how they fixed just the insides of the insert holes when the threads were stripped (most likely, they fixed it free of charge and paid for the return shipping but no word on why or how the threads on a freshly made board were shitty before)
Anyhoo, its fixed now so I can try get the setup done with my bindings and play with it for a little while in my bedroom before the mountains open! Tongue
Will be spending the season (and the rest of all the seasons in my life) with my two custom made boards, so stoked

Thanks for everyone for your ideas/opinions/advices!

Dude, throw up a pic of your board. I'd love to see what you designed!

Im a girl by the way hahaha

Its the left one, the one on the right is another custom design snowboard from New Zealand custom board company Candleman which I got lucky with in 2011 (didnt win it, they didnt get enough entries in for the voting part of the comp so gave all entrants the winning prize)
the yellow/gold round thing on the left board is a company sticker from the board company

The base. I put the tiny white rabbit bit in as an indicator for the cleanliness of the base (im a bit of a nut for base maintenance)

The full setup with the new board and new bindings the recent US spring sale with Burton Lexa bindings that are a couple years old

Thanks for your interest!

(Not sure how to rotate the pictures..)

Don't be silly, girls don't exist on the internet.  LOL

I've never heard of custom board contests so kudos to you for winning some!  Do you like get to pick the design on everything pertaining to the board?  Shocked

Haha thanks!
Ive seen some other snowboard designing contests in the US, but none of them looked very high profile or widely advertised..
I just got lucky and found out about the NZ board competition through some sources I dont remember and found out about the Korean one through another snowboard community site

And yip with these two contests, I got to choose the board size, camber type, number of inserts, flex of the board and the graphics. With the one I won last year (the one this thread is about) I also could choose the stance width and the edge style (normal edge or wave edge- similar to magnetraction but different).
Pretty awesome!

if that's what the rabbit is for it looks like it's in the wrong spot, should be inside the contact points, otherwise looks sick though, did you have part in designing the shape etc as well or just the graphic?

Haha yeah I thought about that but wasnt going to mess up the text area with the rabbit.. I think itll be fine though, the rabbit will still be in loads of contact with the snow cause I hardly ever ride groomed slopes.
I did the graphic and got to choose the size, flex, edge type (wave edge), number of insert holes and stance width, but not the shape of the board. They only do twin regular shaped boards and not hammerheads or anything.
Thanks Tongue
