Did anyone see The Crash Reel on HBO last night?
For those that don't know.... it's a documentary following Kevin Pearce and his family before and after his crash. It's a very eye opening look at the dangers of head injuries and what life is like after a life changing fall. It's pretty inspiring. I highly recommend anyone who has HBO to check it out.

I break balls.

I'll have to DVR it.

Interesting read regarding the film:

Not sure about the rest of you but I have always worn a helmet, even when I learned to ski as a 4 year old (my parents were... are overly protective).

^haven't seen it,though I've watched the small segments/interviews when Kevin Pearce talks about his career after his accident and the amount of time it took him to recover on YT,it's very unfortunate he will never be able to compete again but he's damn lucky to be alive.

It also shows how much of a prick Shaun White is, too.

I never knew anything about this but definitely want to watch or read up on it. How does it show that Shaun white is a prick? I don't know anything about this except for what I just read from sideways' link

The year Shaun won every event, KP was the rider who finally broke his winning streak. The night of Shauns losing contest, he ransacked Kevins room and blasted the entire thing with a fire extinguisher. At the time, KP was living with SW. Shaun called his mom and had her pack up all of Kevins belongings and left them on the front porch and kicked him out of the house. There are more details, but that's all I an remember from the scene.

There's this tidbit of info:

Q: You highlight Shaun White, who is interviewed in the film, kicking Pearce out of a hotel room they were sharing after Pearce beat him at a competition. Did you run into any resistance in exploring some of White’s reputation as being so competitive?
Walker: We were very judicious about what we chose to put in (about White). We were so grateful that he wanted to participate out of respect for his fallen comrade. The competitiveness is widely known, and it is kind of cool. People do have a sense of what it’s taken for him to get to the top.

The part with Trevor Rhoda is pretty sobering. It definitely opened my eyes up to TBI's, when you hear so and so sustained one on TV there's a real disconnect on what that really means. Media for the most part does a good job of glossing over the injury like it's no big deal, they'll be back at in a few months. When the reality is they'll most likely have lingering deficiencies for the rest of there life, and may never be who they once was. I know when I first heard about KP the first thought through my mind was I wonder how long it will be until he's back in the pipe, rather than at least he survived so now he can spend more time with his family and friends.

Just watched the documentary last night, really enjoyed it, but it was really sad throughout and just upsetting to me.  I think what struck me most is just how out of it KP is, you can tell he doesn't really get it and he keeps hoping that he'll get better, but from what I could tell about his progress it doesn't really look like he'll ever be the same.

My girlfriend just got her masters in speech and language pathology, and in getting that degree she learned a ton about TBI's.  As an ice hockey player, I grew up accustomed to wearing a helmet, and so I've always worn a helmet while snowboarding.  However, two years ago I lent my helmet to a friend who was learning how to snowboard at the end of the year, and I never got it back.  So, I rode this whole year without a helmet, with my gf giving me shit the whole time.  But the KP movie definitely reminded me how important wearing one is, and I totally ordered a new one today.

Also getting back to the documentary, the part about Sarah Burke was super depressing, when her husband was talking about the whole thing.

Ya, I've heard about it. My friend was actually talking about it last night. Is it fairly new? I'm trying to see if I can watch it somewhere on the web.

Just saw half of the documentary on HBO while i was browsing the tv channels, all of his buddies from Frends looked up to KP as a mentor and I think it was Jack Matrani who mentioned it's the other way around now after his accident, some very sad moments when they aired the story about Sarah Burke. I'm glad to watch some of this and will finish watching the rest when it airs again. The ending kind of surprise me to see him riding with Shaun in the half pipe ,still a recommended for all snowboarders to watch.

You nailed it right on with the looking up to kp before the accident. I think that mitrani actually said he just wanted to grab kp and shake him so he could be his old self. The injury had turned him into a totally different person...impulsive, rude, and pretty much a dick. It was very good in showing the long term effects of tbi. Really sobering and puts the NFL in a new light for me and what those players must go through.

The end was recorded before the accident, it was in MDP's Picture this. A pretty sick part imo, not to often do you see a legit pipe part in a snowboard flick. Here's the full part with a better soundtrack to it

When the news of KP's accident initially began to air on the news I, like a lot of people, was shocked to hear that he would be out for so long for what looked like a somewhat minor fall. Watching this documentary really opened my eyes to just how bad his injuries actually were. It's so sad to see a phenomenal athlete in his prime get struck down from going out for a fun session with his buds. A once Olympic hopeful can't even ride as hard as most of us regular shlubs anymore. Very sobering.

It's a very touching film. I would suggest it to anyone even if they are not a fan of snowboarding. I still can't get over a fall like that did so much damage to him

^^I know, right? I'm no pro, but I've seen many pros trying new tricks take some sick looking spills. I've only seen one or two get hurt so badly that they can't continue to practice. KP's spill looked so much more tame than most of the others that I've seen and visually you would think he'd just get up and shake it off. It really makes you realize just how dangerous this fun sport we all love can truly be. Ride safe everybody.

Just read a decent write up in Outside magazine (July Issue) about the documentary. I thought it was pretty spot on minus the SW bit about it being over hyped
